سورة لقمان - Luqmān
الٓمٓ
1. The Qur’an is made up of such letters from the Arabic alphabet. The Arabs at the time of revelation were the unrivalled masters of the Arabic language and yet when challenged were totally unable to bring anything like the Qur’an. Despite this fact, the inimitable nature of the Qur’an and its divine source, God knows best the meaning of these disjointed Arabic letters.
التفاسير العربية:
تِلۡكَ ءَايَٰتُ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ ٱلۡحَكِيمِ
2. I.e., the Qur’an, whose Verses are full of wisdom, fair rulings, and guidance to the Right Path.

هُدٗى وَرَحۡمَةٗ لِّلۡمُحۡسِنِينَ

ٱلَّذِينَ يُقِيمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَيُؤۡتُونَ ٱلزَّكَوٰةَ وَهُم بِٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ هُمۡ يُوقِنُونَ

أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ عَلَىٰ هُدٗى مِّن رَّبِّهِمۡۖ وَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ

وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يَشۡتَرِي لَهۡوَ ٱلۡحَدِيثِ لِيُضِلَّ عَن سَبِيلِ ٱللَّهِ بِغَيۡرِ عِلۡمٖ وَيَتَّخِذَهَا هُزُوًاۚ أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ لَهُمۡ عَذَابٞ مُّهِينٞ
6. Of the people there is he who pays for idle talk³ to draw other's attention from God’s Path without knowledge, and take it (God’s way) as a mockery. For such there will be a humiliating torment.
3. And prefers such theatrics, games, singing, dancing, chanting, or meaningless tales to the Divine Guidance.

وَإِذَا تُتۡلَىٰ عَلَيۡهِ ءَايَٰتُنَا وَلَّىٰ مُسۡتَكۡبِرٗا كَأَن لَّمۡ يَسۡمَعۡهَا كَأَنَّ فِيٓ أُذُنَيۡهِ وَقۡرٗاۖ فَبَشِّرۡهُ بِعَذَابٍ أَلِيمٍ
7. When Our verses (of the Qur’an) are recited to him, he turns away in pride, as if he heard them not, as though there were a heaviness in his ears. So warn him of the painful torment⁴.
4. When we do not spend time with God’s Word, the Qur’an, our knowledge about Him is little. We are not given daily, fresh insight into how much we owe Him, how great His gift is. Our love for Him grows slowly and pitifully apart from daily nourishment at His Book, which remind us of our state without Allah (God) and with Him. If you want your love of Allah to be tiny, your comprehension of his grace to be insufficient, neglect the Qur’an. A primary way Allah chooses to impart strength is through the Qur’an. Through His Word, we seek His ways, His mercy, His justice, His promise, and His love. These give us strength in suffering because they remind us of the truth - that we are commanded to follow His last and final messenger, the Prophet Muhammad, may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him, and are being prepared to live with him in Paradise. Holding Fast to the Qur'an and Sunnah. The Prophet Muhammad said: "Everyone of my nation that is all the people will enter Paradise except those who refuse." It was said: "Who does refuse, O Messenger of God?" He said: "He who obeyed me, shall enter Paradise, and who disobeyed me, indeed he has refused.''

إِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ وَعَمِلُواْ ٱلصَّٰلِحَٰتِ لَهُمۡ جَنَّٰتُ ٱلنَّعِيمِ

خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ بِغَيۡرِ عَمَدٖ تَرَوۡنَهَاۖ وَأَلۡقَىٰ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ رَوَٰسِيَ أَن تَمِيدَ بِكُمۡ وَبَثَّ فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ دَآبَّةٖۚ وَأَنزَلۡنَا مِنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ مَآءٗ فَأَنۢبَتۡنَا فِيهَا مِن كُلِّ زَوۡجٖ كَرِيمٍ
10. Allah has created the heavens without pillars that you see, and placed mountains upon the earth lest it should shake with you, and He spread therein animals of every kind. We send down water from the sky, then cause to grow therein (vegetation) of every goodly kind.

وَلَقَدۡ ءَاتَيۡنَا لُقۡمَٰنَ ٱلۡحِكۡمَةَ أَنِ ٱشۡكُرۡ لِلَّهِۚ وَمَن يَشۡكُرۡ فَإِنَّمَا يَشۡكُرُ لِنَفۡسِهِۦۖ وَمَن كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَنِيٌّ حَمِيدٞ
12. We have gave Wisdom to Luqman (Gideon), saying: "Be grateful to Allah." Whoever is grateful, he is only grateful for (the benefit of) himself. And whoever denies (Allah's Favor), then Allah is All-Rich, Praiseworthy.

وَإِذۡ قَالَ لُقۡمَٰنُ لِٱبۡنِهِۦ وَهُوَ يَعِظُهُۥ يَٰبُنَيَّ لَا تُشۡرِكۡ بِٱللَّهِۖ إِنَّ ٱلشِّرۡكَ لَظُلۡمٌ عَظِيمٞ
13. When Luqman (Gideon) said to his son (Abimelech) while he was advising him: "O my son, do not associate anything with Allah, for it is the greatest injustice5."
5. The Prophet Muhammad once saw a man with a brass ring on his hand and asked him, “What is this?” the man replied, “To overcome the weakness of old age.” He said, “Remove it, for, it can only add to your weakness. Should death overtake you while you are wearing it, you would never succeed.” The Prophet Muhammad also said: “Whoever wears talisman or an amulet (or cross for protection or cure) would never see his wish fulfilled by Allah. And whoever hangs a sea shell (for protection) would never get peace and rest.” The Prophet is reported to have said: “Whoever wears a talisman (or cross for protection) has committed polytheism.”
The Prophet saw a man with a piece of twine on his hand (as a protection or cure from fever) so he cut the twine and read the Verse: “Most of them believe in Allah while still practicing polytheism.”

وَوَصَّيۡنَا ٱلۡإِنسَٰنَ بِوَٰلِدَيۡهِ حَمَلَتۡهُ أُمُّهُۥ وَهۡنًا عَلَىٰ وَهۡنٖ وَفِصَٰلُهُۥ فِي عَامَيۡنِ أَنِ ٱشۡكُرۡ لِي وَلِوَٰلِدَيۡكَ إِلَيَّ ٱلۡمَصِيرُ
14. We have enjoined upon man (to honor, be kind, caring) to his parents - his mother bore him in weakness upon weakness, and his weaning is in two years. Be grateful to Me and to your parents. To Me (Allah) is the final return.

وَإِن جَٰهَدَاكَ عَلَىٰٓ أَن تُشۡرِكَ بِي مَا لَيۡسَ لَكَ بِهِۦ عِلۡمٞ فَلَا تُطِعۡهُمَاۖ وَصَاحِبۡهُمَا فِي ٱلدُّنۡيَا مَعۡرُوفٗاۖ وَٱتَّبِعۡ سَبِيلَ مَنۡ أَنَابَ إِلَيَّۚ ثُمَّ إِلَيَّ مَرۡجِعُكُمۡ فَأُنَبِّئُكُم بِمَا كُنتُمۡ تَعۡمَلُونَ
15. Yet if they strive with you to make you associate to Allah as partner that of which you have no (Divine) knowledge, do not obey them. But keep good company with them in this world, and follow the way of him who turns (in repentance) to Me. To Me (Allah) is your (final) return, then I will inform you of what you used to do.

يَٰبُنَيَّ إِنَّهَآ إِن تَكُ مِثۡقَالَ حَبَّةٖ مِّنۡ خَرۡدَلٖ فَتَكُن فِي صَخۡرَةٍ أَوۡ فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ أَوۡ فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ يَأۡتِ بِهَا ٱللَّهُۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ لَطِيفٌ خَبِيرٞ
16. O my son, indeed6 even if it is the very weight of the grain of a mustard seed, hidden in a rock or in the heavens or the earth, Allah will bring it forth. Indeed, Allah is Subtle, All-Aware.
6. Allah keeps the record of all the good and evil deeds.

يَٰبُنَيَّ أَقِمِ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَأۡمُرۡ بِٱلۡمَعۡرُوفِ وَٱنۡهَ عَنِ ٱلۡمُنكَرِ وَٱصۡبِرۡ عَلَىٰ مَآ أَصَابَكَۖ إِنَّ ذَٰلِكَ مِنۡ عَزۡمِ ٱلۡأُمُورِ
17. O my son, keep up the prayer and enjoin what is right (and just)7 and forbid what is wrong8, and bear patiently whatever befalls you. These are of the (necessary and) important matters (ordered by Allah with no exemption).

وَٱقۡصِدۡ فِي مَشۡيِكَ وَٱغۡضُضۡ مِن صَوۡتِكَۚ إِنَّ أَنكَرَ ٱلۡأَصۡوَٰتِ لَصَوۡتُ ٱلۡحَمِيرِ
19. Be moderate in your walking, and lower your voice9. For the most detestable of voices is the braying of the donkeys.
9. By following the Qur’an and the Sunnah – anyone can become more disciplined and reap the rewards. Discipline can be defined as self-control over one’s actions and behaviors. Unlike punishment, imposed externally, discipline is self-directed and largely internal. It requires responsibility for your conduct and outcomes rather than blaming external factors. Cultivating discipline is thus an exercise in accountability and choice.

أَلَمۡ تَرَوۡاْ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ سَخَّرَ لَكُم مَّا فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ وَأَسۡبَغَ عَلَيۡكُمۡ نِعَمَهُۥ ظَٰهِرَةٗ وَبَاطِنَةٗۗ وَمِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَن يُجَٰدِلُ فِي ٱللَّهِ بِغَيۡرِ عِلۡمٖ وَلَا هُدٗى وَلَا كِتَٰبٖ مُّنِيرٖ
20. Do you not see that Allah has made all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth, subservient to you, and completed and lavished upon you His favors outwardly and inwardly? Yet of the people there is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge, guidance, or an enlightening Scripture.

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمُ ٱتَّبِعُواْ مَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ قَالُواْ بَلۡ نَتَّبِعُ مَا وَجَدۡنَا عَلَيۡهِ ءَابَآءَنَآۚ أَوَلَوۡ كَانَ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنُ يَدۡعُوهُمۡ إِلَىٰ عَذَابِ ٱلسَّعِيرِ
21. When they are told: "Follow what Allah has sent down (of Revelation), they say: "Rather, we follow what we found our fathers (following)." Even though Satan calls them to the torment of the blazing Fire?

۞ وَمَن يُسۡلِمۡ وَجۡهَهُۥٓ إِلَى ٱللَّهِ وَهُوَ مُحۡسِنٞ فَقَدِ ٱسۡتَمۡسَكَ بِٱلۡعُرۡوَةِ ٱلۡوُثۡقَىٰۗ وَإِلَى ٱللَّهِ عَٰقِبَةُ ٱلۡأُمُورِ
22. Whoever submits wholly to Allah (God) and is a good-doer, has indeed grasped the firmest and most trustworthy handhold10. To Allah rests the end and decision of all matters.
10. I.e., you shall take no other gods besides Allah.

وَمَن كَفَرَ فَلَا يَحۡزُنكَ كُفۡرُهُۥٓۚ إِلَيۡنَا مَرۡجِعُهُمۡ فَنُنَبِّئُهُم بِمَا عَمِلُوٓاْۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِيمُۢ بِذَاتِ ٱلصُّدُورِ
23. But whoever denies (the Oneness of God), let not their denial grieve you. To Us is their (final) return, then We shall inform them of what they have done. Allah is All-Knowing of what is in the chests (of mankind).

وَلَئِن سَأَلۡتَهُم مَّنۡ خَلَقَ ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ لَيَقُولُنَّ ٱللَّهُۚ قُلِ ٱلۡحَمۡدُ لِلَّهِۚ بَلۡ أَكۡثَرُهُمۡ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ
25. If you ask them, "Who has created the heavens and the earth," they will certainly say: "Allah". Say: "(All) praise be to Allah." But most of them do not know.

لِلَّهِ مَا فِي ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلۡغَنِيُّ ٱلۡحَمِيدُ

وَلَوۡ أَنَّمَا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مِن شَجَرَةٍ أَقۡلَٰمٞ وَٱلۡبَحۡرُ يَمُدُّهُۥ مِنۢ بَعۡدِهِۦ سَبۡعَةُ أَبۡحُرٖ مَّا نَفِدَتۡ كَلِمَٰتُ ٱللَّهِۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَزِيزٌ حَكِيمٞ
27. If all the trees in the earth were pens, and the ocean (were ink), with seven more oceans, the Words of Allah would not be exhausted. Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise.

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُولِجُ ٱلَّيۡلَ فِي ٱلنَّهَارِ وَيُولِجُ ٱلنَّهَارَ فِي ٱلَّيۡلِ وَسَخَّرَ ٱلشَّمۡسَ وَٱلۡقَمَرَۖ كُلّٞ يَجۡرِيٓ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٖ مُّسَمّٗى وَأَنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ خَبِيرٞ
29. Do you not see that Allah causes the night to enter into the day, and the day into the night. He has subjected the sun and the moon. Each pursues its course till an appointed time; and that Allah is All-Aware of what you do?

أَلَمۡ تَرَ أَنَّ ٱلۡفُلۡكَ تَجۡرِي فِي ٱلۡبَحۡرِ بِنِعۡمَتِ ٱللَّهِ لِيُرِيَكُم مِّنۡ ءَايَٰتِهِۦٓۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَأٓيَٰتٖ لِّكُلِّ صَبَّارٖ شَكُورٖ
31. Do you not see that the ships sail through the sea by Allah’s favor that He may show you of His signs? There are certainly signs in this for every patient, grateful one.

وَإِذَا غَشِيَهُم مَّوۡجٞ كَٱلظُّلَلِ دَعَوُاْ ٱللَّهَ مُخۡلِصِينَ لَهُ ٱلدِّينَ فَلَمَّا نَجَّىٰهُمۡ إِلَى ٱلۡبَرِّ فَمِنۡهُم مُّقۡتَصِدٞۚ وَمَا يَجۡحَدُ بِـَٔايَٰتِنَآ إِلَّا كُلُّ خَتَّارٖ كَفُورٖ
32. When a wave covers them, like mountains and clouds, they pray to Allah (alone), being sincere to Him in worship, but when He brings them safe to the land, there are some of them who take a middle course (in faith, while others persist in their denial). None rejects Our Verses except every traitor, ungrateful one.

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّاسُ ٱتَّقُواْ رَبَّكُمۡ وَٱخۡشَوۡاْ يَوۡمٗا لَّا يَجۡزِي وَالِدٌ عَن وَلَدِهِۦ وَلَا مَوۡلُودٌ هُوَ جَازٍ عَن وَالِدِهِۦ شَيۡـًٔاۚ إِنَّ وَعۡدَ ٱللَّهِ حَقّٞۖ فَلَا تَغُرَّنَّكُمُ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةُ ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَلَا يَغُرَّنَّكُم بِٱللَّهِ ٱلۡغَرُورُ
33. People, be mindful of (Allah) your Lord and fear a Day when no father can benefit anything for his son, nor a son benefit anything for his father. The Promise of Allah is (always) true. So do not let the worldly life deceive you, nor let your pride deceive you about Allah.
التفاسير العربية:
إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عِندَهُۥ عِلۡمُ ٱلسَّاعَةِ وَيُنَزِّلُ ٱلۡغَيۡثَ وَيَعۡلَمُ مَا فِي ٱلۡأَرۡحَامِۖ وَمَا تَدۡرِي نَفۡسٞ مَّاذَا تَكۡسِبُ غَدٗاۖ وَمَا تَدۡرِي نَفۡسُۢ بِأَيِّ أَرۡضٖ تَمُوتُۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ عَلِيمٌ خَبِيرُۢ
34. Only Allah has the Knowledge of the Hour (of Doom). He sends down the rain, and knows what is in the wombs. No soul is aware of what it will earn tomorrow and no soul knows in which land it will die. Allah is All-Knowing, All-Aware.
