Al-Mumtahanah

Aya: 1

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ لَا تَتَّخِذُواْ عَدُوِّي وَعَدُوَّكُمۡ أَوۡلِيَآءَ تُلۡقُونَ إِلَيۡهِم بِٱلۡمَوَدَّةِ وَقَدۡ كَفَرُواْ بِمَا جَآءَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡحَقِّ يُخۡرِجُونَ ٱلرَّسُولَ وَإِيَّاكُمۡ أَن تُؤۡمِنُواْ بِٱللَّهِ رَبِّكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ خَرَجۡتُمۡ جِهَٰدٗا فِي سَبِيلِي وَٱبۡتِغَآءَ مَرۡضَاتِيۚ تُسِرُّونَ إِلَيۡهِم بِٱلۡمَوَدَّةِ وَأَنَا۠ أَعۡلَمُ بِمَآ أَخۡفَيۡتُمۡ وَمَآ أَعۡلَنتُمۡۚ وَمَن يَفۡعَلۡهُ مِنكُمۡ فَقَدۡ ضَلَّ سَوَآءَ ٱلسَّبِيلِ

1. O believers, do not take My enemy and your enemy as intimates (confidants and trusted allies), showing them affection while they deny what has come to you of the Truth, driving out the Prophet and yourselves because you believe in Allāh, your Lord? If you ˹truly˺ emigrated to strive in My cause and seek My pleasure, how can you secretly express your love of them? And I know best what you conceal or reveal. Whoever of you does this has gone astray from the right Path.

Aya: 2

إِن يَثۡقَفُوكُمۡ يَكُونُواْ لَكُمۡ أَعۡدَآءٗ وَيَبۡسُطُوٓاْ إِلَيۡكُمۡ أَيۡدِيَهُمۡ وَأَلۡسِنَتَهُم بِٱلسُّوٓءِ وَوَدُّواْ لَوۡ تَكۡفُرُونَ

2. If they ever gain dominance over you, they would be to you enemies, and stretch their hands and their tongues against you with evil, and they wish that you too would disbelieve.

Aya: 3

لَن تَنفَعَكُمۡ أَرۡحَامُكُمۡ وَلَآ أَوۡلَٰدُكُمۡۚ يَوۡمَ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ يَفۡصِلُ بَيۡنَكُمۡۚ وَٱللَّهُ بِمَا تَعۡمَلُونَ بَصِيرٞ

3. Neither your relatives nor your children would benefit you. On the Day of Resurrection He will Judge between you all (and separate the believers from the disbelievers). For Allāh sees what you do.

Aya: 4

قَدۡ كَانَتۡ لَكُمۡ أُسۡوَةٌ حَسَنَةٞ فِيٓ إِبۡرَٰهِيمَ وَٱلَّذِينَ مَعَهُۥٓ إِذۡ قَالُواْ لِقَوۡمِهِمۡ إِنَّا بُرَءَٰٓؤُاْ مِنكُمۡ وَمِمَّا تَعۡبُدُونَ مِن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ كَفَرۡنَا بِكُمۡ وَبَدَا بَيۡنَنَا وَبَيۡنَكُمُ ٱلۡعَدَٰوَةُ وَٱلۡبَغۡضَآءُ أَبَدًا حَتَّىٰ تُؤۡمِنُواْ بِٱللَّهِ وَحۡدَهُۥٓ إِلَّا قَوۡلَ إِبۡرَٰهِيمَ لِأَبِيهِ لَأَسۡتَغۡفِرَنَّ لَكَ وَمَآ أَمۡلِكُ لَكَ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ مِن شَيۡءٖۖ رَّبَّنَا عَلَيۡكَ تَوَكَّلۡنَا وَإِلَيۡكَ أَنَبۡنَا وَإِلَيۡكَ ٱلۡمَصِيرُ

4. You have a good example in Abraham and those with him when they said to their (pagan) people: "Indeed, we are disassociated from you and from what you worship besides Allah. We reject you and there will be animosity and hatred forever between us and you until you believe in Allāh alone." Except for Abraham’s words to his father, "I will surely ask forgiveness for you, but I do not have power (to do) for you anything against Allāh. Our Lord, in You we trust, and to You we return (alone in repentance), and to You is the final return of all.

Aya: 5

رَبَّنَا لَا تَجۡعَلۡنَا فِتۡنَةٗ لِّلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ وَٱغۡفِرۡ لَنَا رَبَّنَآۖ إِنَّكَ أَنتَ ٱلۡعَزِيزُ ٱلۡحَكِيمُ

5. Our Lord, do not make us subject to the persecution of those who disbelieve, and forgive us, our Lord. You are truly the All-Mighty, All-Wise."

Aya: 6

لَقَدۡ كَانَ لَكُمۡ فِيهِمۡ أُسۡوَةٌ حَسَنَةٞ لِّمَن كَانَ يَرۡجُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَٱلۡيَوۡمَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَۚ وَمَن يَتَوَلَّ فَإِنَّ ٱللَّهَ هُوَ ٱلۡغَنِيُّ ٱلۡحَمِيدُ

6. There is a good example in Abraham (and those who followed him), for anyone who look forward (with Hope and Awe) to Allāh and the Last Day. But whoever turns away, then Allāh is certainly the Self-Sufficient, Praiseworthy.

Aya: 7

۞ عَسَى ٱللَّهُ أَن يَجۡعَلَ بَيۡنَكُمۡ وَبَيۡنَ ٱلَّذِينَ عَادَيۡتُم مِّنۡهُم مَّوَدَّةٗۚ وَٱللَّهُ قَدِيرٞۚ وَٱللَّهُ غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٞ

7. Perhaps Allāh will bring about mutual affection between you and those whom you hold to be your enemies among them. For Allāh is Most Capable. Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Aya: 8

لَّا يَنۡهَىٰكُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَنِ ٱلَّذِينَ لَمۡ يُقَٰتِلُوكُمۡ فِي ٱلدِّينِ وَلَمۡ يُخۡرِجُوكُم مِّن دِيَٰرِكُمۡ أَن تَبَرُّوهُمۡ وَتُقۡسِطُوٓاْ إِلَيۡهِمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ يُحِبُّ ٱلۡمُقۡسِطِينَ

8. Allāh does not forbid you 'as regards' those 'disbelievers' who do not fight against you because of 'your' religion, and do not expel you from your homes that you deal kindly and equitably with them. Indeed, Allāh loves the equitable.

Aya: 9

إِنَّمَا يَنۡهَىٰكُمُ ٱللَّهُ عَنِ ٱلَّذِينَ قَٰتَلُوكُمۡ فِي ٱلدِّينِ وَأَخۡرَجُوكُم مِّن دِيَٰرِكُمۡ وَظَٰهَرُواْ عَلَىٰٓ إِخۡرَاجِكُمۡ أَن تَوَلَّوۡهُمۡۚ وَمَن يَتَوَلَّهُمۡ فَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلظَّٰلِمُونَ

9. Allāh only forbids you from befriending those 'disbelievers' who fought you because of 'your' religion, or expelled you from your homes or supported 'others' in your expulsion. Whoever takes them for friends, then such are the unjust.

Aya: 10

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوٓاْ إِذَا جَآءَكُمُ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَٰتُ مُهَٰجِرَٰتٖ فَٱمۡتَحِنُوهُنَّۖ ٱللَّهُ أَعۡلَمُ بِإِيمَٰنِهِنَّۖ فَإِنۡ عَلِمۡتُمُوهُنَّ مُؤۡمِنَٰتٖ فَلَا تَرۡجِعُوهُنَّ إِلَى ٱلۡكُفَّارِۖ لَا هُنَّ حِلّٞ لَّهُمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ يَحِلُّونَ لَهُنَّۖ وَءَاتُوهُم مَّآ أَنفَقُواْۚ وَلَا جُنَاحَ عَلَيۡكُمۡ أَن تَنكِحُوهُنَّ إِذَآ ءَاتَيۡتُمُوهُنَّ أُجُورَهُنَّۚ وَلَا تُمۡسِكُواْ بِعِصَمِ ٱلۡكَوَافِرِ وَسۡـَٔلُواْ مَآ أَنفَقۡتُمۡ وَلۡيَسۡـَٔلُواْ مَآ أَنفَقُواْۚ ذَٰلِكُمۡ حُكۡمُ ٱللَّهِ يَحۡكُمُ بَيۡنَكُمۡۖ وَٱللَّهُ عَلِيمٌ حَكِيمٞ

10. O believers, when the believing women come to you as immigrants, examine them. Allāh knows best about their faith. If you find them to be believers, do not send them back to the disbelievers. They are not lawful [wives] for them, nor are they lawful [husbands] for them. Give the disbelievers what they have spent [of dowries]. There is no blame on you to marry these 'women' as long as you give their dowries. And do not hold to marriage bonds with the polytheistic women. Ask for what you have spent 'of dowries', and let the disbelievers also ask for what they have spent [of dowries]. This is Allah’s Judgment - He judges between you. For Allāh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

Aya: 11

وَإِن فَاتَكُمۡ شَيۡءٞ مِّنۡ أَزۡوَٰجِكُمۡ إِلَى ٱلۡكُفَّارِ فَعَاقَبۡتُمۡ فَـَٔاتُواْ ٱلَّذِينَ ذَهَبَتۡ أَزۡوَٰجُهُم مِّثۡلَ مَآ أَنفَقُواْۚ وَٱتَّقُواْ ٱللَّهَ ٱلَّذِيٓ أَنتُم بِهِۦ مُؤۡمِنُونَ

11. If any of your wives desert you to the disbelievers¹, and afterward you have your turn (of triumph and gain war booty from them), then give to those whose wives have gone away the like of what they have spent [of dowries], and fear Allāh in Whom you believe.

1. Who will not give you back the dowry which you have paid them.

Aya: 12

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلنَّبِيُّ إِذَا جَآءَكَ ٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَٰتُ يُبَايِعۡنَكَ عَلَىٰٓ أَن لَّا يُشۡرِكۡنَ بِٱللَّهِ شَيۡـٔٗا وَلَا يَسۡرِقۡنَ وَلَا يَزۡنِينَ وَلَا يَقۡتُلۡنَ أَوۡلَٰدَهُنَّ وَلَا يَأۡتِينَ بِبُهۡتَٰنٖ يَفۡتَرِينَهُۥ بَيۡنَ أَيۡدِيهِنَّ وَأَرۡجُلِهِنَّ وَلَا يَعۡصِينَكَ فِي مَعۡرُوفٖ فَبَايِعۡهُنَّ وَٱسۡتَغۡفِرۡ لَهُنَّ ٱللَّهَۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ غَفُورٞ رَّحِيمٞ

12. O prophet, when believing women come to you pledging that they will not associate anything with Allāh (in worship), nor steal, nor commit adultery, nor kill their children, nor lie or utter slander, intentionally forging falsehood between their arms and legs², nor disobey you in what is right³ and just, then accept their pledge, and ask forgiveness for them from Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

2. I.e., to falsely attribute a child whether adopted or born of adultery to a woman’s husband.
3. Nor disobey you in doing what is right, which is that which concords with obedience to Allāh, such as refraining from wailing, ripping apart their clothes in grief, pulling out their hair, tearing open the front of their garments or scratching their faces.

Aya: 13

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُواْ لَا تَتَوَلَّوۡاْ قَوۡمًا غَضِبَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيۡهِمۡ قَدۡ يَئِسُواْ مِنَ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ كَمَا يَئِسَ ٱلۡكُفَّارُ مِنۡ أَصۡحَٰبِ ٱلۡقُبُورِ

13. O believers, do not befriend a people whom have earned the Wrath of Allāh. They (the unbelieving Jews) have despaired of (reward in) the Hereafter just as the pagans have despaired of (meeting) the inhabitants of the graves.
