11. Esto es lo que Al-lah les ordena con relación a la herencia que deben recibir sus hijos: el hijo varón recibirá el doble de lo que reciba una hija[129], en el caso de haber hijos e hijas; si (el difunto) solo tuviese hijas, dos o más, estas recibirían dos tercios de la herencia (repartidos entre ellas a partes iguales); si tuviera solo una hija, a ella le correspondería la mitad de la herencia. Los padres recibirán cada uno un sexto de la herencia, en caso de que el difunto dejase algún hijo (varón o mujer); si no dejase ninguno, los padres heredarían todo, de modo que la madre recibiría un tercio (y el padre el resto). Si el difunto tuviera algún hermano o hermana, la madre recibiría un sexto (y el padre el resto, mientras que los hermanos no heredarían nada[130]). Esta distribución debe realizarse tras el pago de las deudas y el cumplimiento del testamento[131] que (el difunto) haya podido dejar escrito. Ustedes no saben quiénes pueden beneficiarlos más (en esta vida y en la otra), si sus padres o sus hijos (para dejar a unos más herencia que a otros). Esto es lo que Al-lah les ordena (en cuanto a la distribución de la herencia). En verdad, Al-lah es Omnisciente y Sabio.
[129] La responsabilidad económica del mantenimiento de la familia recae sobre el hombre, no sobre la mujer, aunque ella posea más bienes que él; a ello se debe que el hombre reciba más en la mayoría de los casos, ya que parte de lo que él recibe lo gastará en su familia, mientras que la mujer no tiene esa obligación. [130] La parte que recibe la madre se reduce si el hijo fallecido tiene hermanos porque puede que el padre tenga que mantener al resto de los hijos o hijas, y por ello es normal que reciba más que la madre en dicho caso.
