1. Ha Meem¹.
1. The Qur’an is made up of such letters from the Arabic alphabet. The Arabs at the time of revelation were the unrivalled masters of the Arabic language and yet when challenged were totally unable to bring anything like the Qur’an. Despite this fact, the inimitable nature of the Qur’an and its divine source, God knows best the meaning of these disjointed Arabic letters.
2. By the clear Book²:
2. The clear Book is the Qur’an whose verses are clear with regards to its language and rulings, and all its meanings. A Book whose Truth is evident and which clears up that which is indefinite and inexact.
3. We have made it an Arabic Qur’an (i.e., recitation) that you may understand.
4. It (the Qur’an) is in the Master Book³ with Us, Most Exalted, full of Wisdom.
3. i.e., the Preserved Tablet
5. Shall We then turn away the Reminder (this Qur’an) from you altogether just because you are a transgressing people?
6. How many a Prophet did We sent among the former people?
7. There did not come to them a Prophet but they mocked at him.
8. We destroyed those who were stronger than these (pagans) in power, and the example of the predecessors have already been related,
9. (Muhammad), if you ask them: Who created the heavens and the earth? They will certainly say: (Allah), the All-Mighty, the All-Knowing One, has created them;
10. It is He (Allah) Who has made for you the earth as a cradle, and made for you therein pathways that you may find your way;
11. It is He (Allah) Who sends down water (rain) from the sky according to a measure, then We revive thereby a dead land. Thus will you be brought forth (from the graves);
12. It is He (Allah) Who created pairs of all things, and made for you ships and cattle on which you ride,
13. That you may settle yourselves on their backs, then remember the Favor of (Allah) your Lord when you have settled on them, and say: "Glory be to Allah Who has subjected this to us, and we could not have subdued it (ourselves);
14. And to (Allah) our Lord we must return."
15. Yet they (the pagans) assign to Him a part of His creation⁴. Man is clearly ungrateful (denier).
4. By claiming that the angels are the daughters of Allah.
16. Has He (Allah) taken daughters for Himself of what He Himself creates, and chosen for you to have sons?
17. When one of them (the pagans) is given the good news of (baby a girl) the like of which he attributes to (Allah) the Most Compassionate, his face (that pagan) becomes dark, and he is full of rage.
18. (Do they then attribute to Allah) that which is brought up in adornment, while in dispute cannot make themselves clear.
19. (Yet) they claim that the angels - who are servants of (Allah) the Most Compassionate - to be female (divinities). Did they witness their creation? Their statement will be written down, and they will be questioned.
20. They say: "If (Allah) the Most Compassionate had willed, we would never have worshiped them (i.e., idols)." They have no knowledge of that; they do nothing but guess.
21. Or have We given them a Scripture before it (this Qur’an) so that they hold fast to it?
22. Rather, they say: "We found our fathers on a faith (of worshiping idols), and we are guided by their footsteps (and ways)."
23. Thus We did not send before you any warner in a town, but those affluent people in it said: "We found our fathers on a way, and we are followers of their footsteps."
24. (The warner) said: "Even if I bring to you a better guide than that (religion) on which you found your fathers?" They said: "We are deniers in that with which you are sent."
25. So We took retribution from them, then see how was the end of the deniers.
26. When Abraham said to his father and his people: "I strongly renounce what you worship,
27. Except Him⁵ Who created me, He will certainly guide me.
5. I.e. I worship none but Allâh Alone.
28. And he made it⁶ a word remaining among his descendants that they may return to it⁷.
6. I.e., that you shall not take any other gods besides Allah.
7. When they slip and then repent to Allah or receive admonition.
29. But I let these (pagans) and their fathers to enjoy until there came to them the Truth and a clear messenger⁸.
8. i.e., the Prophet Muhammad
30. But when there came to them the Truth they said: "This is magic, and we are, regarding it, deniers."
31. And they said: "Why is not the Qur’an sent down to a man of importance from one of the two towns⁹?
9. Of Makkah and Ta’if in Arabia.
32. Do they distribute the Mercy of (Allah) your Lord? It is We Who have distributed among them their livelihood in the life of this world, and We have raised some of them above others in degrees, that they may serve one another. The Mercy of (Allah) your Lord is better than what they amass.
33. Were it not that all people would become one community¹⁰, We would have made for those who deny (Allah) the Most  Compassionate, for their houses, ceilings out of silver and elevators by which they ascend up.
10. I.e., all deniers desiring only the life of this world.
34. And for their houses doors and couches (of silver) on which they recline,
35. And (other) ornaments of gold. All these are only a (temporary) enjoyment of this worldly life. But the Hereafter with (Allah) your Lord is only for the pious¹¹.
11. Who keep to the Commandments of Allah and abstain from what He has prohibited.
36. Whoever turns away blindly from the remembrance of (Allah) the Most Compassionate, We appoint for him a devil, so he becomes his associate (increasing him in sin).
37. They will prevent them from the right Path (of Islam), while they think that they are rightly guided (so they do not repent);
38. Until when he comes to Us, he (the denier will) say (to his appointed devil): "Would that between me and you there were the distance of the East and the West. What a wretched companion you were."
39. It will not benefit you this Day as you worked iniquity¹², that you are sharers in the Torment.
12. By associating partners with Allah in worship or committing other deadly sins.
40. Can you make the deaf hear or guide the blind and him who is in manifest error?
41. Even if We take you away (in death), stil We shall take retribution on them;
42. Or show you that (torment) which We have threatened them. We are certainly dominant over them all.
43. So hold fast (Muhammad) to that which has been revealed to you (this Qur’an). You are certainly on a right Path.
44. It (the Qur’an) is a Reminder to you and your people, and you will all be questioned.
45. Ask those of Our messengers whom We sent before you: "Did We ever appoint gods to be worshiped besides (Allah) the Most Compassionate?"
46. We sent Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his council, and he said: "I am the messenger of (Allah) the Sovereign Lord of all that exists (of mankind, jinn, angels, etc)."
47. But when he (Moses) came to them with Our signs, at once they laughed at them.
48. We did not show them a Sign but it was greater than its fellow. We seized them with torment that they may repent.
49. They said (to Moses): "O sorcerer¹³, invoke your Lord for us, as Allah has made the covenant with you. (If He removes this torment from us) we will certainly accept guidance."
13. i.e., man of vast learning
50. But when We removed from them the torment, at once they broke the pledge.
51. And Pharaoh proclaimed among his people: "O my people, is not the kingdom of Egypt mine? And these streams flow beneath me, do you not then see (my grandeur)?
52. Am I not better than this lowly man (Moses) who can hardly express himself?
53. Why then have not bracelets of gold been placed upon him, or why have there not come with him angels as companions?"
54. So he (Pharaoh) bluffed his people, and they obeyed him. They were a rebellious people (against Allah).
55. When they angered Us, We took (Divine) Retribution on them, so We drowned them all together,
56. Thus We made them a precedent and an example for the later generations.
57. When the son of Mary (Jesus Christ) was quoted as an example¹⁴, your people laughed out (at the example)¹⁵.
14. Of being worshiped along with Allah.
15. Arguing that Jesus will be in Hell as well! The Prophet replied that the verse was talking exclusively about idols, adding that Jesus himself did not ask to be worshiped.
58. They (the idolaters) said: "Are our gods better, or he (Jesus)?" They did not quote it (the comparison) except for (mere) dispute, rather they are a quarrelsome people.
59. Jesus was no more than a humble being (servant and messenger of Allah) on whom We bestowed Favor (Prophethood). We made him an example for the children of Israel.
60. If We so willed, We could have made (instead) of you angels to be successors on the earth.
61. Jesus is a known sign¹⁶ of (the approaching of) the Hour (of Doom), so have no doubt about it, and follow me (in Islamic Monotheism) - this is the right Path.
16. I.e., in his second coming to the earth. Muhammad, God's Messenger (ﷺ) said: There is no prophet between me and him, that is, Jesus. He will descent (to the earth). When you see him, recognize him: a man of medium height, reddish and fair, wearing two light yellow garments, looking as if drops were falling down from his head though it will not be wet. He will fight the people for the cause of Islam. He will break the cross declaring the end of that wrong doctrine, kill the swine indicating prohibition of consuming pork, and abolish the tax. Allah will end all religions except Islam. Jesus will kill the Antichrist and will live on the earth for forty years and then he will die. The Muslims will pray funeral prayer over him.
62. Let not Satan prevent you (from the right Path of Islam), for he is an open enemy to you.
