قَالُواْ سُبۡحَٰنَكَ مَا كَانَ يَنۢبَغِي لَنَآ أَن نَّتَّخِذَ مِن دُونِكَ مِنۡ أَوۡلِيَآءَ وَلَٰكِن مَّتَّعۡتَهُمۡ وَءَابَآءَهُمۡ حَتَّىٰ نَسُواْ ٱلذِّكۡرَ وَكَانُواْ قَوۡمَۢا بُورٗا
18. They will say: Glory be to You (O Allāh). It was not beseeming for us to take besides You of any protectors (lords, saviors) other than You [6]. But you let them and their forefathers enjoy (the pleasures of the worldly life) until they forgot the Remembrance [7], and they became a people ruined ".
[6]. So they had no right to take us as such and make us objects of their worship.
[7]. Mohammad, God's messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Whoever dies worshipping other gods besides Allāh will enter Hell.”
