Al-Baqarah

Ayah: 1

الٓمٓ

1. Alif Laam Meem¹.

1.The Qur’an is made up of such letters from the Arabic alphabet. The Arabs at the time of revelation were the unmatched masters of the Arabic language and yet when challenged were totally unable to bring anything like the Qur’an. Although these disjointed Arabic letters are referring to the inimitable nature of the Qur’an and its divine source, God knows best its meaning.

Ayah: 2

ذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡكِتَٰبُ لَا رَيۡبَۛ فِيهِۛ هُدٗى لِّلۡمُتَّقِينَ

2. This Book (the Qur’an), there is no doubt about it, is a guide to the righteous.

Ayah: 3

ٱلَّذِينَ يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِٱلۡغَيۡبِ وَيُقِيمُونَ ٱلصَّلَوٰةَ وَمِمَّا رَزَقۡنَٰهُمۡ يُنفِقُونَ

3. Who believe in the unseen², keep up the prayer3 and give in charity (a part) of what We have provided for them4.

2. Such as the Existence of God, angels, jinn 'spirits, demons', life after death, Paradise and Hell, etc.
3.Keeping up the Prayer, entails performing it punctually and devoutly, observing the manner set forth by the Prophet, who said: “Pray as you have seen me Pray”.
4. It is to be noted that the reference of Allāh to Himself as "We or Us" in many Qur’ānic verses is necessarily understood in the Arabic language to denote grandeur and power, as opposed to the more intimate singular form "I or Me" used in specific instances. This is the “royal” We or Us. In English, its called the plural of majesty. This syntax is used, both in the English and Arabic languages, by emperors, kings and queens. “We, the Emperor of …, grant amnesty to …”. And to Allah is the best example. He is the King of all kings. He is the Sovereign. To Him belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth. Further more the phrase 'a part of what We have provided for them' used the word “min” which means some (or part), to make them aware that He will indeed not take from them except a small portion of their wealth, which does not harm them, but they benefit from giving it, and their brothers also benefit from it.

Ayah: 4

وَٱلَّذِينَ يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيۡكَ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ مِن قَبۡلِكَ وَبِٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ هُمۡ يُوقِنُونَ

4. Who believe in what has been revealed to you (Muhammad)5 and what was revealed before you6, and who are certain of the Hereafter life.

5. Of the Qur’an and the Sunnah - the teachings of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him). It includes everything he said, did, and approved of. Muhammad, God's Messenger said: "Beware, I have been given the Qur'an and something similar to it along with it, yet the time is coming when a man replete on his couch will say: Keep to the Qur'an; what you find in it to be permissible treat as permissible, and what you find in it to be prohibited treat as prohibited. But indeed, whatever the Messenger of Allāh forbids is like what Allāh forbids.”
6. Of the Torah, the Gospel, the Psalms, etc.

Ayah: 5

أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ عَلَىٰ هُدٗى مِّن رَّبِّهِمۡۖ وَأُوْلَٰٓئِكَ هُمُ ٱلۡمُفۡلِحُونَ

5. These are on (right) guidance from their Lord 'Allāh' and these are the successful.
