Vers: 60

أَلَمۡ تَرَ إِلَى ٱلَّذِينَ يَزۡعُمُونَ أَنَّهُمۡ ءَامَنُواْ بِمَآ أُنزِلَ إِلَيۡكَ وَمَآ أُنزِلَ مِن قَبۡلِكَ يُرِيدُونَ أَن يَتَحَاكَمُوٓاْ إِلَى ٱلطَّٰغُوتِ وَقَدۡ أُمِرُوٓاْ أَن يَكۡفُرُواْ بِهِۦۖ وَيُرِيدُ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنُ أَن يُضِلَّهُمۡ ضَلَٰلَۢا بَعِيدٗا

(60) Have you ˹Muhammad˺ not seen those who falsely claim that they Believe^[902] in what was sent down to you and what was sent down before you^[903]; ˹yet still˺ they want to resort to false gods^[904] to adjudicate ˹their disputes˺, when they were commanded to reject it^[905]—Satan wants to swerve them far off the path ˹of guidance˺.

[902] The hypocrites whose hearts are diseased.
[903] The Qur’an and earlier Scriptures, respectively.
[904] According to ʿAbdullāh Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنهما) this aya was revealed with regards to a group of the Aslam tribe, who professed Islam, then went to Abū Zurārah al-Aslamī, the soothsayer, to settle a dispute. (al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Kathīr, al-Saʿdī)
[905] Judgement which is not in accordance with what God sent down to His Messenger (ﷺ). (al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Kathīr, al-Saʿdī)

Vers: 61

وَإِذَا قِيلَ لَهُمۡ تَعَالَوۡاْ إِلَىٰ مَآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ وَإِلَى ٱلرَّسُولِ رَأَيۡتَ ٱلۡمُنَٰفِقِينَ يَصُدُّونَ عَنكَ صُدُودٗا

(61) When it is said to them: “Come to what Allah has sent down and to the Messenger!” you see the hypocrites turn away from you with fervour.

Vers: 62

فَكَيۡفَ إِذَآ أَصَٰبَتۡهُم مُّصِيبَةُۢ بِمَا قَدَّمَتۡ أَيۡدِيهِمۡ ثُمَّ جَآءُوكَ يَحۡلِفُونَ بِٱللَّهِ إِنۡ أَرَدۡنَآ إِلَّآ إِحۡسَٰنٗا وَتَوۡفِيقًا

(62) How ˹then will they fare˺ when disaster strikes them because of what their hands sent forth, and ˹then˺ they ˹will˺ come to you^[906] swearing by Allah: “We only meant to do good and set matters straight!”

[906] At times of hardship they know only too well to whom they should resort; the one who possesses the truth and is able to alleviate their affliction by praying to the True God.

Vers: 63

أُوْلَٰٓئِكَ ٱلَّذِينَ يَعۡلَمُ ٱللَّهُ مَا فِي قُلُوبِهِمۡ فَأَعۡرِضۡ عَنۡهُمۡ وَعِظۡهُمۡ وَقُل لَّهُمۡ فِيٓ أَنفُسِهِمۡ قَوۡلَۢا بَلِيغٗا

(63) Those are the ones about whom Allah knows what lurks in their hearts, so turn away from them^[907], warn them and say to them profound words about themselves^[908].

[907] That is, do not take measures to punish them for their insincerity. As long as they did not make manifest the Denial that they are really bent on, there is no way against them (cf. al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Kathīr, al-Jazā’irī).
[908] Qawl balīgh is penetrating speech that reaches people’s hearts because of its frankness and persuasiveness. For it to be so, it has to be true and to the point. (Ibn Fāris, Maqāyīs al-Lughah; al-Iṣfahānī, al-Mufradāt)

Vers: 64

وَمَآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا لِيُطَاعَ بِإِذۡنِ ٱللَّهِۚ وَلَوۡ أَنَّهُمۡ إِذ ظَّلَمُوٓاْ أَنفُسَهُمۡ جَآءُوكَ فَٱسۡتَغۡفَرُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَٱسۡتَغۡفَرَ لَهُمُ ٱلرَّسُولُ لَوَجَدُواْ ٱللَّهَ تَوَّابٗا رَّحِيمٗا

(64) We only sent Prophets to be obeyed, by Allah’s permission. Had they – when they wronged themselves – come to you and sought Allah’s forgiveness and the Messenger sought forgiveness for them, they would have surely found Allah All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

Vers: 65

فَلَا وَرَبِّكَ لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ حَتَّىٰ يُحَكِّمُوكَ فِيمَا شَجَرَ بَيۡنَهُمۡ ثُمَّ لَا يَجِدُواْ فِيٓ أَنفُسِهِمۡ حَرَجٗا مِّمَّا قَضَيۡتَ وَيُسَلِّمُواْ تَسۡلِيمٗا

(65) Nay by your Lord! They will not truly Believe until they seek your judgement in their disputes and then they find no scruples in them from your judgement and they give in totally.
