وَحَسِبُوٓاْ أَلَّا تَكُونَ فِتۡنَةٞ فَعَمُواْ وَصَمُّواْ ثُمَّ تَابَ ٱللَّهُ عَلَيۡهِمۡ ثُمَّ عَمُواْ وَصَمُّواْ كَثِيرٞ مِّنۡهُمۡۚ وَٱللَّهُ بَصِيرُۢ بِمَا يَعۡمَلُونَ

71. They thought that there would be no trial [57], so they became blind and deaf (of heart). Then Allāh turned to them in repentance, yet again many of them became blind and deaf. Allāh is All-Seeing of what they do. info

[57]. They deceived themselves by selfishly thinking that they would not be ‘tried’ for their grievous offences. Such self-deceit blinded and deafened them to seeing and hearing the Truth of Islam, thus they will not find a way to it. Even after Allāh relented towards them and guided them at a certain juncture of time, a great many of them still fell back into their old ways.
