Maryam

1. Kaf Ha Ya Ain Saad¹.
1. See footnote to Qur’an chapter2: Verse1.
2. (This is) a reminder of the Mercy of your Lord (Allāh) to His servant Zachariah.
3. When he called out to his Lord (Allāh) a private call (supplication),
4. He said: "My Lord, indeed my bones have weakened and my head flared with white hair, and I have never been wretched in my prayer to You, my Lord.
5. And indeed I fear (what) the kinsmen after me (will do), and my wife² is barren, so grant me from Yourself an heir,
2. i.e., Elizabeth
6. Who) will inherit me and inherit from the family of Jacob3. And make him my Lord pleasing (to You)."
3. Of the religious Knowledge and Prophethood.
7. (He was told), "O Zachariah, We give you good news of a son whose name will be Yahya 'John': We have not assigned to any from before (this) name."
8. He said: "My Lord, how can I have a son when my wife has been barren, and I have reached the extreme of old age?
9. (The angel) said: "Thus (it will be); your Lord (Allāh) says: "It is easy for Me, for I created you before, when you were not anything."
10. (Zachariah) said: "My Lord, make me for me a sign (if this is truly from You)." He said: "Your sign is that you will not (be able) to speak to the people three nights (and days) while sound."
11. So he went forth to his people from the sanctuary, and he signaled to them: "Glorify (and praise Allāh) morning and evening.
12. (Allāh said,) "O Yahya (John), hold firmly to the Scripture (Torah) and We gave him (sound) judgement while yet a boy.
13. And affection from Us and purity, and he was pious,
14. And dutiful to his parents, and he was not a disobedient tyrant.
15. And peace be upon him the day he was born, and the day he dies, and the Day he will be resurrected to life again.
16. And Mention, (O Muhammad), in the Book (the story of) Mary, when she withdrew from her family to a place in the east;
17. So she took a veil (to screen herself) from them; then We sent to her Our (holy) spirit (i.e., the angel Gabriel) who appeared to her in the shape of perfect man.
18. (Mary) said: "I seek refuge in (Allāh) the Most Compassionate from you, should you be righteous.
19. (Gabriel) said: "I am only a messenger of (Allāh) your Lord, 'sent' to bestow upon you with a pure son."
20. (Mary) said: "How can I have a son when no man has ever touched me, nor am I unchaste woman?"
21. (Gabriel) said: "Thus it will be; your Lord (Allāh) says: "It is easy for Me. And that We may make him a sign to the people and a Mercy from Us. And it is a matter already destined".
22. So she conceived him and withdrew thereby (with him to) a remote place³.
3. I.e., Bethlehem, around 10km to the south of Jerusalem.
23. And the labour made her come to the trunk of a palm tree. She said: "Oh, would that I had died before this, and was a thing forgotten, completely forgotten!”
24. So he⁴ called her from below her, saying: "Grieve not, your Lord (Allāh) has made a stream to flow beneath you;
4. The baby Jesus or the angel Gabriel.
25. And shake towards you the trunk of the palm tree, it will drop on you fresh ripe dates⁵:
5. It is clear from this Verse that Jesus actually born in summer not winter, as fresh dates are only produced in the summer. According to this Verse, during labour Mary was told to shake a palm tree so that ripe dates would fall off. This description, combined with the ripening period of dates places the birth of Jesus somewhere between June and August – something to do in warmer weather, not in the chilly December air of Bethlehem.
26. So eat and drink and refresh your eyes. Should you see any of the mortal (and talk to you) say: "I have vowed a fast to the Most Compassionate 'Allāh', so I will not speak to any human being today."
27. So she brought him to her people, carrying him. They said: "Mary, you have certainly done an abominable thing."
28. O sister of Aaron, your father was not a wicked man, nor was your mother an unchaste woman."
29. So she pointed to him. They said: "How can we speak to one who is a child in the cradle?"
30. (Jesus) said: "I am a servant of Allāh; He has (destined to be) given (to) me the Scripture, and (to) made me a Prophet;
31. And He has made me blessed wherever I may be, and He has enjoined upon me (to establish) the prayer and (give) the poor-rate so long as I live;
32. And be dutiful to my mother, and He has not made me a wretched tyrant;
33. And peace be upon me the day I was born, the day I die, and the Day I will be resurrected to life again."
34. Such is Jesus, the son of Mary - A Word of Truth, in which they dispute.
35. It does not befit (the Majesty of) Allāh to take unto Himself of any son. Glory be to Him. When He decrees a matter, He only says to it: “Be,” and it is.
36. (Jesus declared), "Indeed, Allāh is my Lord and your Lord, (my God and your God), so worship Him alone; this is a right path."
37. Yet the (Christian) sects differed from among themselves⁶. So woe to those who disbelieve (in the Truth) from the scene of a tremendous Day.
6. Some believed that Jesus was God or the son of God, whereas those who truly followed him considered him only human and God's servant and messenger.
38. How (clearly) they (polytheists and unbelievers) will hear and see on the Day they come to Us. But the unjust this Day are in manifest error.
39. And warn them of the Day of regret, when matters will be decided; but they are in heedlessness, and they do not believe.
40. Surely it is We Who will inherit the earth and all those on it, and to Us they will be all returned (for Judgment).
41. And mention in the Book (the story of) Abraham. He was surely a man of truth and a Prophet.
42. When he said to his father, "O my father, why do you worship ( an idol) that neither hears nor sees, nor avails you in any thing?
43. O my father7, there has come to me of Knowledge that which did not come to you, so follow me, I will guide you to an even Path8:
7. 7. I.e., Azar, Terah. He was the Chief Priest of King Nimrod Shaddad of Babylon and Ninevah, and was a master sculptor.
8. I.e., Islam. By following right belief of Allāh where there are no worshipping of images and idols but worship Him alone, right worship of Allāh, right and lawful earning of livelihood, right speech, right conduct, right effort and endeavour, right mindfulness, and right concentration on what makes you closer to Allāh 'God'.
44. O my father, worship not Satan. Indeed, Satan has ever been disobedient to the Most Compassionate (Allāh).
45. O my father, I fear that a torment from the Most Compassionate touch you, and become Satan's companion (in Hell).
46. He said: "Have you disliked my deities (idols) O Abraham? If you do not desist, I will certainly stone you (to death), and leave me a long while.”
47. (Abraham) said: "Peace on you. I will pray to my Lord to forgive you. Indeed, He is ever generous to me.
48. And I will withdraw from you and what (the idols) you invoke besides Allāh and I will invoke my Lord; It may be that in invoking my Lord, I will not be wretched."
49. So when (Abraham) had withdrawn them and what (the idols) they worshipped besides Allāh, We granted him Isaac and Jacob, and each one of them We made a Prophet.
50. And We granted them of Our mercy, and We made for them a tongue of sincerity, most exalted.
51. And Mention in the Book (the story of) Moses. Indeed, He was sincerely devoted, and he was a messenger, a Prophet.
52. And We called him from the right side of mount (Sinai), and drew him near for a private talk.
53. And We granted him out of Our mercy his brother Aaron, a Prophet.
54. And mention in the Book (the story of) Ishmael. He was truthful in 'his' promise, and was a messenger and a Prophet.
55. He used to enjoin on his people prayer and Zakat (obligatory alms), and was to his Lord (Allāh) well-pleasing.
56. And mention in the Book (the story of) Idrees (Enoch). He was surely a man of truth and a Prophet.
57. And We exalted him to a high position9.
9. Allāh granted Enoch the privilege of being taken directly to heaven, escaping the clutches of death. Enoch's transition from his earthly existence to Allah’s presence is a confirmation of the power of faith and the reward of Allāh.
58. These are the ones on whom Allāh bestowed Favors, from among the Prophets of the offspring of Adam, and of those whom We carried (in the Ship) with Noah, and of the descendants of Abraham and Israel 'Jacob', and of those whom We guided and chose. When the Verses of the Most Compassionate (Allāh) were recited to them, they fell down prostrating and weeping10.
10. The Prophet Muhammad (may Allah's peace and blessings be upon him) said:  "Two eyes will not be touched by the Fire: an eye which has wept out of fear of God, and an eye which has spent the night guarding in the cause of God."
When a person remembers the greatness of Allāh, His power over His servants, and, at the same time, he recalls his own state and his negligence in fulfilling the rights of Allāh upon him, he weeps in hope of receiving Allah's Mercy and in fear of His Wrath and Punishment. Such a person is promised to be saved from the Hellfire.
59. Yet there succeeded them successors, who neglected the prayers and pursued the lusts, so soon they will meet a devastation.
60. Except him who repents, believes and does good, these will enter Paradise, and they will not be dealt unjustly in any way.
61. (Theirs will be) Gardens of Eden which the Most Compassionate (Allāh) has promised to His servants while unseen. Surely it is that, His promise has ever been coming.
62. They will not hear therein any vain discourse, but only (greetings of) 'Peace,' and they will have their provision therein, morning and evening11.
11. I. e., without interruption, according to their desires.
63. This is the Paradise which We cause to inherit those of Our servants, who is devotely righteous.
64. And We (the angels)12 do not descend except by the Command of your Lord (Allāh). To Him belongs all that is before us, behind us, and in between that. And your Lord is never forgetful.
12. In answer to the Prophet's wish that Gabriel would visit him frequently.
65. Lord of the heavens and the earth and all that is between them. So worship Him (alone) and and (indure) patiently in His worship. Do you know of anyone equal (or comparable) to Him (in His Names and Attributes)?”
66. Man (the disbeliever) says: "When I am dead, will I indeed be eventually brought out alive?"
67. Does not man remember that We created him before, while he was nothing?
68. By your Lord, We will surely gather them along with the devils, then bring them all around Hell, on their knees.
69. Then We will surely pluck out from every sect, whichever of them was the most strict against the Most Compassionate (Allāh) in rebellion.
70. Then, surely We know best those who are most deserving to be burnt in it.
71. And there is none of you but will encounter it (Hell)13. This is an unavoidable decree of your Lord that must be fulfilled.
13. I.e., be exposed to it. However, the people of Paradise will not be harmed thereby.
72. Then We will deliver those who are pious, and leave the evildoers therein (humbled and abased) on their knees (in Hell).
73. When Our clear Verses are recited to them, those who disbelieve say to those who believe: "Which of the two groups is better in station and more decent in assembly?"
74. And how many a (sinful) generation We have destroyed before them who were more better in furnishings and splendour?
75. Say: "Whoever is (entrenched) in misguidance - let the Most Compassionate (Allāh) extend for him an extension (in wealth and time) until when they see what they were threatened with, either the torment (in this world) or the Hour (of Doom); then they will know who is worse in position and weaker in forces.
76. And Allāh increases those who have been 'rightly' guided in guidance. Yet the everlasting righteous deeds are better with your Lord 'Allāh' in reward and better for return14.
14. What Allāh reminds us here is that we should not get caught up in the pursuit of worldly rewards at the expense of the Hereafter. We should work for success in both, keeping in mind that the rewards of this world are transient and those of the Hereafter are eternal. Allāh emphasizes the quality of permanence, drawing our attention to how it contrasts with worldly blessings like wealth and children. Once this contrast is established strongly in our minds, we are then informed of the way we can attain these permanent blessings – by engaging in acts of righteousness. Nothing causes worry for human beings more than the loss of what we have, the loss of wealth, of health, and the inevitable loss of youth. There is no stronger context, then, for us to be reminded of the enduring value of our good deeds.
77. Have you then seen him, who disbelieved in Our verses, (yet boasts) and says: "I will surely be given wealth and children?"
78. Has he probed the unseen, or taken a covenant from the Most Compassionate (Allāh)?
79. No, We shall record what he says and extend for him from the punishment extensively (in the Hereafter).
80. And We will inherit him 'in' what he says (and boasts)15, and he will come to Us alone.
15. Instead of giving him wealth and children in the Hereafter, Allāh will take from him those he had in worldly life at the time of his death.
81. And they have taken besides Allāh (false) gods that they should be for them a source of honor;
82. Not at all, they will disbelieve in their worship, and will be opponents against them.
83. Do you not see that We have sent the devils against the disbelievers, inciting them (to sin) with constant incitement?
84. So do not hasten against them; only We count for them a number (of days).
85. The Day We shall gather the righteous to the Most Compassionate (Allāh) as (an honoured) delegation.
86. And We drive the guilty to Gehinnom 'Hell' like a thirsty herd.
87. They will not have (the power) of the intercession except he who has taken a promise from the Most Compassionate (Allāh).
88. And they says: "The Most Compassionate (Allāh) has a son."
89. You have indeed come with a thing atrocious.
90. By which the heavens are almost torn, and the earth split asunder, and the mountains fall in ruins,
91. (They dared to) claim that the Most Compassionate (Allāh) has a son.
92. And it does not befit (the Majesty of) the Most Compassionate (Allāh) to take a son.
93. There is none in the heavens and the earth but will come to the Most Compassionate (Allāh) as a slave (a humble creature).
94. Indeed, He has counted them and enumerated them one by one in exact number.
95. And each one of them will come to Him on the Day of Resurrection alone as an individual16.
16. Without any helper, protector or guardian.
96. Indeed, those who believe and do righteous deeds, the Most Compassionate 'Allāh' will bestow love for them (in the hearts of the believers).
97. So surely We have only made it (the Qur’an) easy in your tongue that you may give good news thereby to the righteous, and warn with it a quarrelsome people.
98. And how many a (sinful) generation We have destroyed before them? Do you perceive from them any one, or hear of them a slight voice?
