46. Among the Jewish (there are those who) alter the words from their places and say: ‘We hear and disobey,’ and ‘hear but be not heard,’ and ‘Raina,’ distorting (the word) with their tongues and defaming the religion. If they had said (instead): ‘We hear and we obey,’ and ‘heed,’ and ‘look at us,’ it would have been better for them and more upright. But Allāh has cursed them because of their faithlessness, so they do not believe except a little.
47. O you who have been given the Scripture (Jews and Christians), believe in We have been sending down (of the Qur’an to Muhammad) confirming what with you, before We obliterate faces and turn them backwards, or curse them as We cursed the violators of the Sabbath. And Allah’s command is always executed.
48. Indeed, Allāh does not forgive that anything should be associated with Him, but He forgives what is less than that to whom He wills. Whoever associates anything with Allāh, then he has fabricated a tremendous sin.
49. Have you not seen those who attribute purity to themselves24? Rather, Allāh purifies whom He wills; and they will not be done an injustice (even) as much as a thread of a date stone.
24. Those are the Jews who say: “We are the children of Allāh and His beloved ones!”
50. See how they invent a lie against Allāh, and that is enough as a manifest sin25.
25. By glorifying themselves in such a manner and claiming honour falsely. Do not be wise in your own eyes; rather fear Allāh with reverent awe and obedience to Him and His messenger, the Prophet Muhammad, and turn entirely away from evil.
51. Have you not seen those (Jews) to whom a portion of the Scripture has been given? They believe in superstition and false objects of worship26, and say about those who disbelieve (the pagans): These are better guided in the path than those who believe (of the Muslims).
26. That is anything worshipped other than Allâh - the false deities, it may be idols, graves, demons, satan, angels, saints, or any humans.
