Translation of the Meanings of the Noble Qur'an - English Translation - Abdullah Hasan Yaqoub * - Translations’ Index

Translation of the meanings Surah: Al-Mā’idah   Ayah:
104. When it is said to them: "Come to what Allāh has revealed (of the Qur’an) and to the Messenger (Muhammad)," they say: "That tradition on which we found our fathers is enough for us." Even though their fathers knew nothing, nor were they guided.
105. O believers, you are accountable only for yourselves. It will not harm you who go astray as long as you are 'rightly' guided78. To Allāh is your 'final' return all of you together, then He will inform you of what you used to do.
78. After you call them to guidance, their rejection will not harm you.
106. O believers, testimony between you, when death approaches any one of you, at the time of making the will is two just men from your own people (Muslims) or any two other men (non-Muslims) witnesses while you are traveling in the land then befalls you calamity of the death. Detain both of them from after the prayer if you doubt about their testimony79, (stand them up)80 and let them both take an oath by Allāh (saying): "We will not trade our testimony for any price, even in favor of a close relative, nor will we conceal the testimony enjoined by Allah, for then we would surely be among the sinners.”
79. They are made to take such an oath because the judge has justifiable doubts about their truthfulness not because they are non-Muslim.
80. The two non-Muslim witnesses. When doubted, it has to be made absolutely sure that their testimony is trustworthy and that if challenged, even if by Muslims, the challengers will undergo equally scrupulous measures.
107. Then, if their honesty is challenged and found guilty, let two others stand in their place, nearest in kin from among those who claim a lawful right. Let them swear by Allāh: "Our testimony is truer than their testimony, and we have not transgressed, for then we would certainly be unjust."
108. This is more proper in order that they81 will give testimony truly or fear that their oaths will be refuted by the oaths of others afterwards. Fear Allāh and listen (obediently); and Allāh does not guide the rebellious people.
81. The two original witnesses.
