[535] No se sabe mucho acerca de quién fue ese poderoso rey, pero según la tradición del Profeta —que Al-lah lo bendiga y le dé la paz— fue un rey justo y creyente que alcanzó el este y el oeste de la tierra, de ahí parece venir su nombre Dhul Qarnain, que significa “el de los dos cuernos” o “el Bicorne”, refiriéndose a los dos extremos de la tierra por donde sale y se pone simbólicamente el sol. Algunos comentaristas opinan que podría tratarse de Alejandro Magno, pero no hay ninguna prueba que apoye esta hipótesis, además de que era un rey politeísta.
