38 : 12

وَٱتَّبَعۡتُ مِلَّةَ ءَابَآءِيٓ إِبۡرَٰهِيمَ وَإِسۡحَٰقَ وَيَعۡقُوبَۚ مَا كَانَ لَنَآ أَن نُّشۡرِكَ بِٱللَّهِ مِن شَيۡءٖۚ ذَٰلِكَ مِن فَضۡلِ ٱللَّهِ عَلَيۡنَا وَعَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَشۡكُرُونَ

38. I follow the faith of my forefathers — Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It is not [right] for us to associate anything with Allāh [12]. This is from the grace of Allāh upon us and upon all people [13], yet most people are not grateful [14]. info

[12]. Here is an explanation of the reason behind this great favour: by way of calling them to Islamic Monotheism.
[13]. The favour of guidance to worshipping none but Almighty Allāh without associating any partners with Him in worship.
Faith is an honor, not a heritage. Joseph inherited the message, not privilege — he lived its principles even in prison.
Islamic Monotheism is the core of every prophetic mission.
[14]. That is, they are heedless of this great favour and do not believe and worship only Allāh and Him Alone.
Gratitude sustains faith. When people stop thanking Allāh, they easily fall into shirk (associating others with Allāh in worship).
True gratitude is not in words only but in actions as well and in heart. The thankful heart sees faith itself as the greatest blessing.

39 : 12

يَٰصَٰحِبَيِ ٱلسِّجۡنِ ءَأَرۡبَابٞ مُّتَفَرِّقُونَ خَيۡرٌ أَمِ ٱللَّهُ ٱلۡوَٰحِدُ ٱلۡقَهَّارُ

39. O my two companions of the prison,
are many different lords better, or Allāh — the One, the All-Subduer [15]?

[15]. Even in the darkness of prison, Prophet Joseph (peace be upon him) speaks with dignity, gentleness, and clarity of faith. He does not begin by condemning or rebuking his fellow prisoners for their beliefs; instead, he invites them to think rationally. His tone is friendly — “O my two companions of the prison” — showing empathy before presenting truth. This models the dawah (invitation) method of the prophets: kindness before correction.
He poses a question rather than a command: “Are many lords better, or Allāh —the One, the All-Subduer?”
This rhetorical question appeals to the intellect, not emotion. It asks: Can multiple, conflicting gods bring harmony, power, and justice? Or is it more rational to believe in One Lord, absolute in power, free of partners and equals?
By this simple question, Yusuf exposes the absurdity of polytheism and points to the logical and spiritual peace found in tawḥīd — the oneness of God.
Allāh alone has irresistible power and control over all creation. Even kings, rulers, and jailers—who seem mighty—are under His command. Jousuf, though imprisoned, recognizes that true power lies not with those who hold the keys to cells, but with the One who controls the destiny of all.
Despite his unjust imprisonment, Yusuf’s heart is not filled with bitterness or despair; it is filled with da‘wah and purpose. He uses even his misfortune as an opportunity to guide others. This shows that a believer’s mission of spreading truth is not limited by circumstance — even hardship can become a platform for guidance.

40 : 12

مَا تَعۡبُدُونَ مِن دُونِهِۦٓ إِلَّآ أَسۡمَآءٗ سَمَّيۡتُمُوهَآ أَنتُمۡ وَءَابَآؤُكُم مَّآ أَنزَلَ ٱللَّهُ بِهَا مِن سُلۡطَٰنٍۚ إِنِ ٱلۡحُكۡمُ إِلَّا لِلَّهِ أَمَرَ أَلَّا تَعۡبُدُوٓاْ إِلَّآ إِيَّاهُۚ ذَٰلِكَ ٱلدِّينُ ٱلۡقَيِّمُ وَلَٰكِنَّ أَكۡثَرَ ٱلنَّاسِ لَا يَعۡلَمُونَ

40. You worship nothing besides Him except mere names that you have named, you and your forefathers, for which Allāh has sent down no authority. Judgment belongs to none but Allāh. He has commanded that you worship none but Him. That is the upright religion, but most people do not know [16]. info

[16]. Peoples’ utter ignorance leads to associating partners with Allāh in worship.

41 : 12

يَٰصَٰحِبَيِ ٱلسِّجۡنِ أَمَّآ أَحَدُكُمَا فَيَسۡقِي رَبَّهُۥ خَمۡرٗاۖ وَأَمَّا ٱلۡأٓخَرُ فَيُصۡلَبُ فَتَأۡكُلُ ٱلطَّيۡرُ مِن رَّأۡسِهِۦۚ قُضِيَ ٱلۡأَمۡرُ ٱلَّذِي فِيهِ تَسۡتَفۡتِيَانِ

41.  O my two companions of the prison, as for one of you, he will serve wine to his master; and as for the other, he will be crucified, and the birds will eat from his head. The matter about which you both inquired has already been decreed. info

42 : 12

وَقَالَ لِلَّذِي ظَنَّ أَنَّهُۥ نَاجٖ مِّنۡهُمَا ٱذۡكُرۡنِي عِندَ رَبِّكَ فَأَنسَىٰهُ ٱلشَّيۡطَٰنُ ذِكۡرَ رَبِّهِۦ فَلَبِثَ فِي ٱلسِّجۡنِ بِضۡعَ سِنِينَ

42. Then he said to the one whom he knew would be saved of the two, "Mention me to your master." But Satan caused him to forget mentioning it to his master, so [Joseph] remained in prison for several years. info

43 : 12

وَقَالَ ٱلۡمَلِكُ إِنِّيٓ أَرَىٰ سَبۡعَ بَقَرَٰتٖ سِمَانٖ يَأۡكُلُهُنَّ سَبۡعٌ عِجَافٞ وَسَبۡعَ سُنۢبُلَٰتٍ خُضۡرٖ وَأُخَرَ يَابِسَٰتٖۖ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡمَلَأُ أَفۡتُونِي فِي رُءۡيَٰيَ إِن كُنتُمۡ لِلرُّءۡيَا تَعۡبُرُونَ

43. The king said, "Indeed, I saw [in a dream] seven fat cows being eaten by seven lean ones, and seven green ears of grain and others that were dry. "O you notables, tell me the meaning of my dream, if you can interpret dreams." info
