An-Noor

1. (This is) a Chapter (of the Qur’an) which We have sent down and made (its rulings) obligatory and revealed in it clear Verses that you may take heed.
2. As for female and male fornicators, flog each of them with a hundred lashes¹, and let not pity for them detain you in the matter of (enforcing) the laws of Allāh², if you believe in Allāh and the Last Day. Let a party of believers witness their torment.
1. Fornication has to be proven either by confession or the testimony of four reliable eyewitnesses to having actually seen the act take place. This ruling is applicable to unmarried fornicators. Execution by stoning i.e., to death is confirmed in the sunnah for married adulterers.
In the Bible, the basis for punishment of stoning specifically for adultery is clearly provided in Leviticus (20:10-12) which reads: "If a man commits adultery with another man's wife, even with the wife of his neighbour, both the adulterer and adulteress must be put to death...." Further, in Deuteronomy (22:22-24), it is stated that, "If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, you should take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death.". Criminalising adultery and the provision of the severe punishment of stoning to death is legitimate in both Christianity and Islam. For Christianity, this is based on the evidence from the Old Testament and the New Testament as Jesus Christ says with regard to the fulfillment of the Law: "Do not think that I have come to abolish the law of the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them" (Matt, 5:17).
2. I.e., Do not let sympathy for a wicked person move you to change anything decreed by Allāh, for in His Law is protection of society as a whole.
3. The fornicator marries none except a fornicatress or a polytheist woman, and the fornicatress none marries her except a fornicator or a polytheist man. That is prohibited for the believers.
4. Those who accuse chaste women (or men, of adultery) then do not produce four eyewitnesses (to support their allegations), flog them with eighty lashes. And never accept any testimony from them ever; and those are they (who are) the rebellious.
5. Except those who repent afterward, and reform; then surely Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
6. As for those (husbands) who accuse their wives (of adultery) and have no witnesses except themselves, then (the) testimony (of) one of them (is) four testimonies (oaths) by Allah, that he is telling the truth.
7. And the fifth (testimony) that the curse of Allāh is upon him, if he is telling a lie."
8. But it will prevent the torment from her if she testifies four testimonies 'swearing' by Allāh that he is surely of the liars.
9. And the fifth (oath) that the Wrath of Allāh be upon her, if he is telling the truth.
10. Had it not been for Allah’s Favor upon you and His mercy and that Allāh is accepting of repentance, All-Wise (He would have punished you).
11. Indeed, those who brought up the slander (accusaion)³ are a band (of hypocrites) among you. Do not think it is bad for you; rather, it is good for you⁴. Every one of them will have what he has earned of sin. and the one who took on himself the main part of it⁵ among them, he will have a grievous torment.
3. Against Aishah, the wife of the Prophet.
4. For believers being distinguished from hypocrites; and ‘Ā’ishah being absolved from false accusation, and rules were revealed on such incidents, etc.
5. I.e., ‘Abdullah ibn ’Ubayy, leader of the hypocrites in Madinah at that time.
12. Why not, when you heard it (such a rumor), the believing men and women think good of themselves, and say: "This is a clear slander."
13. Why did they not produce for it four witnesses? And when they do not produce the witnesses, then those, in the sight of Allah, who are the liars.
14. Were it not for Allah’s Favor upon you (O men,) and His mercy in this world and the Hereafter, you would have certainly been touched for what you have plunged in it with a terrible torment.
15. When you received it with your tongues and spoke with your mouths what you had no knowledge of, and you deemed it an easy matter, while in the sight of Allāh it is a tremendous thing.
16. Why not, when you heard it, did you not say: "It is not for us to speak of this. Glory be to You (O Allāh). This is an awful slander.
17. Allāh admonishes you that you return to the like of it ever, if you are believers.
18. And Allāh makes the Verses clear to you, for Allāh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
19. Those who like to publicize indecency among those who believe, they will have a painful torment in this world and in the Hereafter. For, Allāh knows and you do not know.
20. Were it not for Allah’s favor on you and His mercy, and that Allāh is Most Kind, Most Merciful - (you had perished).
21. O believers, do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Whoever follows the footsteps of Satan, then indeed he commands indecency and evil. Had it not been Allah’s favor upon you and His mercy, not one of you would have ever been pure, but Allāh purifies whom He wills⁶. For, Allāh is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
6. The Word of God, the Qur’an, keeps our heart clean by pointing out the areas that need confession and renunciation. It helps to remove the dirt. The Qur'an and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad exhorts us to obey Allāh. The pure heart, by necessity, is the obedient heart. To obey Allah’s Word with all our heart is to obey Allāh with a pure heart. There is an important connection between obedience and purity of heart. Such obedience involves doing actions that are pleasing to Allāh. To be good and pure we should keep away from idolatry and sins. There are many forms of idolatry in the modern world, with many new and subtle ones in addition to the old and familiar ones. Materialism, greed, luxury, new gadgets, work, appearances, new lifestyles and the like - all these have the potential to negatively affect the purity of the heart. We are warned to keep away from anything that can become an idol, and every idol that pollutes our heart. The Prophet Muhammad said: "The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are matters unclear that are unknown to most people. Whoever is wary of these unclear matters has absolved his religion and honor. And whoever indulges in them has indulged in the unlawful. It is like a shepherd who herds his sheep too close to preserved sanctuary, and they will eventually graze in it. Every king has a sanctuary, and the sanctuary of Allāh is what He has made unlawful. There lies within the body a piece of flesh. If it is sound, the whole body is sound; and if it is polluted, the whole body is polluted. This is the heart." The Prophet, peace be upon him, was once asked, who are the best people?” He said: "One with a heart swept clean and truthful in speech. We said: “O Messenger of God, we know truthful in speech. What is a heart swept clean?” The Prophet said: "One that is Godfearing and pure, in which there is neither sin, nor transgression, nor envy." We said, “Who shows a sign of it?” The Prophet said: "One who despises worldliness and loves the Hereafter." We said: “And who shows a sign of it?” The Prophet said: "A believer with good character."
22. And let not those of you who possess grace and affluence swear that they give (charity) to the near of kin, the destitute, and immigrants for Allah’s Cause. Let them pardon and overlook. Do you not love that Allāh should forgive you⁷? For Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
7. This verse was revealed after the slander against Aishah (May Allah be pleased with her), in which she was absolved from, and Allah (may He be Glorified and Exalted) revealed verses from the seven heavens declaring her innocence.
One of the people who were involved in spreading the false accusation against Aishah was Mistah bin Uthatha, Abu bakr's own relative whom Abu Bakr supported him financially. When the above verses were revealed and our mother Aishah was declared innocent, Abu Bakr swore that he would no longer support Mistah bin Uthatha. This is when Verse 22 was revealed.
The amazing immediate action Abu Bakr responded with when he heard the verse, especially at the end of the verse where Allah (may He be Glorified and Exalted) said (what means) "let forgive and forbear. Do you not wish that Allah should forgive you? "Abu Bakr replied with "By Allah! We do want that Allah should forgive us.”
And he again started helping Mistah."
A person who doesn't forgive others will not be forgiven. If you forgive other people when they sin against you, Allāh will also forgive you. Allāh desires that everyone forgives. You find peace by forgiving others, while yourself unforgiveness delivers you to stress and emotional suffering. Forgiveness calms stress levels, leading to improved health.
23. Indeed, those who (falsely) accuse chaste, innocent and faithful women8 are cursed in this world and in the Hereafter, and they will have a grievous torment.
8. Or men, of committing unlawful carnal relations.
24. On the Day when their tongues, hands and feet will testify against them for what they used to do.
25. On that Day Allāh will pay them (in full) their just due, and they will know that Allāh is the Evident Truth (Perfect in Justice).
26. Bad words and deeds are characteristic of bad people. Bad people are 'inclined' towards the bad words and deeds. Similarly the good words and deeds are 'characteristic' of good people. And good people 'are inclined' towards the good words and deeds8. Such9 are clear from what is said 'of slander'. For them is Forgiveness and a generous provision.
8. Another accepted interpretation is "Evil women are for evil men, and evil men are for evil women. And good women are for good men, and good men are for good women."
9. Innocent people: Aishah, the wife of the Prophet, and those innocent and pure similar to her. In fact bad words and deeds are characteristic of bad people. Bad people are inclined towards the bad words and deeds. Similarly the good words and deeds are 'characteristic' of good people. And good people are inclined towards the good words and deeds.
27. O believers, do not enter houses other than your own houses until you have asked permission and greeted their inhabitants9. This is better for you, that you may remember.
9. Muhammad, The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Three people have a guarantee from Allāh 'God'. If he lives he will have provision to suffice him, and if he dies he will enter Paradise: one who when he is entering (or leaving out from) his house greets the inhabitants with the greeting of peace 'Islam, i.e., Assalamu alaykum' has a guarantee from Allāh, one who goes out to the mosque for the congregational prayer has a guarantee from Allāh, and one who goes out to jihad for the Cause of Allāh has a guarantee from Allāh.”
28. If you do not find anyone therein, then do not enter until permission is given to you. If you are told: "Go back", then go back. This is purer for you. Allāh of what you do is All-Knower.
29. There is no sin on you that you enter (without asking permission) houses not inhabited10 wherein some provision11 for you. For Allāh knows what you reveal and what you conceal.
10. Public places as in the case of travellers inns and charitable hostels.
11. Such as rest, shelter, commodities, one's personal belongings, etc.
30. Tell to the believing men to (maintain their modesty,) lower their gaze (from what is unlawful)12 and guard their private parts. This is purer for them. Surely Allāh is All-Aware of what they do.
12. Such as looking with lust at women who are not their wives. Anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed sin in his heart.
31. Tell to the believing women to (maintain their modesty,) lower their gaze13 and guard their private parts. Let them not display their beauty (whether natural or with make-up) except what (must unavoidably) appear thereof14, and let them draw their veils over their (heads, faces, and) chests (and what is beyond), and let them not display their (hidden) beauty except to their husbands or (only part of their beauty such as their faces, necks, hands to) their fathers, or the fathers of their husbands, or their sons, or the sons of their husbands, or their brothers, or their brother’s sons, or their sister’s sons, or their women, or those whom their right hands possess, or male attendants (devoid of sexual feeling), or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women; and they should not strike their legs (i.e., stamp their feet) so that whatever adornment they hide may be known. Turn to Allāh all of you in repentance, O believers, that you may succeed and prosper.
13. In the presence of men who are not near of kin and so lawful for marriage.
14. I.e., the outer garments or whatever might appear out of necessity, such as a part of the face or the palms of hands.

32. And marry off the unmarried among you and those who are righteous among your bondmen and bondwomen. If they be poor15, Allāh will enrich them from His bounty; for Allāh is Ample-Giving, All-Knowing.
15. Though they are empty-handed, Allāh will never forsake them. He will never turn them away, He will never abandon them. But He will enrich them from His bounty; for Allāh is Ample-Giving, All-Knowing.

33. Yet let those who do not find the means to marry remain chaste until Allāh enriches them from His bounty. And as for those (bondmen) who seek the writing (contract of emancipation) from among those whom your right hands possess, give them the contract, if you know any good in them, and give them of the wealth of Allāh which He has given you. Do not compel your maid girls to prostitution16 when they desire chastity, in order to seek the frail goods of this worldly life. Whoever compels them, then after their compulsion, Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful17.
16. Sexual slavery, or commercial sexual exploitation.
17. And the sin lays on the compeller, the human trafficker.

34. Indeed, We have sent down to you (O people) clarifying Verses and examples (from the history) of those who have passed on before you, and an admonition for the righteous.

35. Allāh is the Light of the heavens and the earth18; the example of His Light19 is like a niche wherein is a lamp, the lamp is in a glass. The glass as if it were a brilliant star, lit from (the oil of) a blessed olive-tree, located neither to the east nor the west20. Its oil is almost lights up though fire does not touch it. Light upon light. Allāh guides to His Light whom He wills. Allāh sets forth examples for the people. Allāh is Knowing of all things.
18. By which He guides their inhabitants. Allāh invite confused, lost unbelievers to follow Him out of their spiritual darkness. Allāh is the light of the world. Whoever follows Allāh and His messenger Muhammad will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. In God’s light, we can see stumbling blocks, sin, and blind spots, allowing Him to remove such darkness from our lives as He shines His light into our hearts and on our path. Allah’s light brings us protection, and guidance. Instead of wandering through life, we can seek Allāh for direction as He lights the way.
19. The Faith and the Qur’an in the heart of a believer.
20. But on a hill where it receives light from morning till evening.

36. In houses (of worship - mosques) that Allāh has ordered to be raised up and His Name be mentioned therein; exalting Him within them, in the mornings and the evenings -
37. Men, whom neither trade nor selling distracts them from the Remembrance of Allāh, performance of prayer and paying the poor-rate. They fear a Day in which the hearts and eyes will be overturned;
38. That Allāh may reward them according to the best of their deeds, and increase them more out of His bounty. Allāh gives sustenance to whom He wills without limit.
39.  But those who disbelieve, their deeds are like a mirage in a desert, which a thirsty man thinks is water; until when he comes to it he finds nothing. And, He finds Allāh there (in the Hereafter) who pays him full his due account. For Allāh is Swift in Reckoning.
40. Or (else their deeds) are like the darkness in a deep sea, covered by waves above which are waves, over which are (dark) clouds: darkness above each other; if one stretches out his hand he can hardly see it. The one to whom Allāh does not give light (of guidance), for him there is no light21.
21. Some of the supplications of the Prophet Muhammad were: "O Allāh, place light in my heart, light in my sight, light in my hearing, light on my right, light on my left, light above me, light below me, light in front of me, light behind me, make light for me." He asked that light be engulfing his organs and all his sides, which is translated into clarification and illumination of the truth and guidance to it. Therefore, he asked for light in all parts of his body as well as his behaviors, life changes, situations, and entirety from the six directions so that he will never be misguided in any way.

41. Do you not see that Allāh glorify Him whoever is in the heavens and the earth, and the birds with outspread wings? Each has already known its prayer and glorification. For Allāh is All-Knower of all what they do.
42. To Allāh 'alone' belongs the kingdom of the heavens and the earth and to Allāh is the (final) return (of all).
43. Do you not see that Allāh drives the clouds gently, then joins them together, then piles them up into a mass, then you see the rain coming forth from their midst? He sends down from the sky, mountains (of clouds) wherein is hail, striking therewith whom He wills and turning it away from whom He wills. The flash of its lightning almost takes away with the sight.

44. Allāh alternates the night and day22; there is certainly a lesson in this for those who have vision.
22. I.e., causes the night and the day to succeed one another.
45. And Allāh, created every beast of water. Some of them creep on their bellies, some walk on two feet, and some of them walk on four legs. Allāh creates what He wills. Indeed, Allāh is Able to do all things.
46. We have indeed sent down clarifying verses. For Allāh guides whoever He wills to a straight path (i.e., Islam).
47. They say: "We believe in Allāh and in the messenger (Muhammad) and we obey;" then a party of them turn back after this. These are not believers.
48. When they are called to Allāh and His messenger 'Muhammad' that he may judge between them, at once a party of them turn aside.
49. If the right is theirs, they come to him (the Prophet) submissively.
50. Is there a sickness (of hypocrisy) in their hearts? Or do they doubt? Or are they fearing that Allāh will be unjust to them and His messenger (Muhammad)? Rather, it is they who are the unjust.
51. The only saying of the believers, when they are called to Allāh and His messenger 'Muhammad' that he may judge between them, is to say: "We hear and we obey." And these are the successful.
52. And whoever obeys Allāh and His messenger (Muhammad), and fears Allāh and is conscious of Him - these are the winners.
53. And they swear by Allāh with their most solemn oaths that if you command them they would go forth (for fighting in Allah’s Cause). Say: "Do not swear". (Such) obedience (of yours) is known (to be false). Indeed, Allāh is Well-Aware of all that you do.
54. Say: "Obey Allāh and obey the messenger (Muhammad)." If you turn away, then upon him is only that (duty) with which he has been charged (to convey Allah’s message), and upon you is that with which you have been charged (to listen and obey). And if you obey him (the Prophet), you will be (rightly) guided. Nothing is upon the messenger (of Allāh) except a clear delivering (of Allah’s Message).
55. Allāh has promised to those of you who believe and do righteous deeds that He will grant them authority on the earth, just as He granted it to those before them. and He will surely establish for them their religion which He has approved for them. He will replace for them after their fear with peace and security (provided that) they worship Me alone, associating nothing with Me (in worship). Whoever disbelieves (in the Truth) after this, these are the rebellious (against God).
56. Keep up the prayer, pay the poor-rate and obey the messenger (Muhammad) - that you may receive 'Allah’s' mercy.
57. Do not ever think that those who disbelieve (in the Truth) will escape in the earth. And their abode is the Fire. Indeed, what a miserable destination.
58.  O believers, let those whom your right hands possess and those of you who have not reached puberty ask permission of you three times; before the morning prayer, and when you put off your clothes at midday in summer, and after the prayer of nightfall. (These are) three times of privacy for you. There is no blame on you or on them after these (periods) to move about freely, some of you attending to some others 23. Thus Allāh makes clear the Verses to you. For Allāh is All-knowing, All-Wise.
23. If they come into your presence without permission.
59. And when the children among you have reached puberty, let them seek permission as those before them sought permission. Thus does Allāh make clear to you His verses. Allāh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

60. As for elderly (menopausal) women24 who do not expect to marry, it is no sin for them if they discard their (outer) clothes25 without displaying any beauty by adornment. If they refrain (from discarding their outer clothing) it is better for them. Allāh is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.

61. There is no blame on the blind, nor is there blame on the lame, nor is there blame on the sick, nor on yourselves that you eat from your houses, or your father’s houses or your mother’s houses, or your brother’s houses, or your sister’s houses, or your paternal uncle’s houses, or your paternal aunt’s houses, or your maternal uncle’s houses, or your maternal aunt’s houses, or what you possess the keys of, or your friend’s 'houses'. There is no sin upon you whether you eat together or separately. When you enter houses, give greetings of peace26, a greeting from Allāh, blessed 'and' good. Thus Allāh makes clear to you the Verses that you may understand.
26. Saying as-salamu alaykum - peace be with you.

62. The believers are only those who believe in Allāh and His messenger (Muhammad), and when they are with him on some collective matter, they do not leave until they have asked his permission. Indeed, those who ask your permission are the ones who (really) believe in Allāh and His messenger. So when they ask your permission for some affair of theirs, give permission to whom you will of them and ask forgiveness for them from Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.

63. Do not make the calling of the messenger (of Allāh) among you as your calling one another. Allāh knows those of you who slip away, concealed by others27. So let those beware who go against his 'the prophet’s' order, lest a trial afflict them or there befalls them a painful torment.
27. Without taking the permission to leave from the messenger.

64. Unquestionably, to Allāh belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth. He indeed knows that which you are upon28. And (let them beware) the Day when they will be 'all' returned to Him, and He will inform them of what they have done. For Allāh has absolute knowledge of all things.
28. of belief, disbelief, or hypocrisy and the condition of your souls.
