16. Say to the dwellers of the desert 'around Medina' who lagged behind: "You shall soon be called 'to fight' against a people given to great warfare whom you will fight against them or who will surrender. If you obey 'the Messenger', Allāh will grant you a good Reward. But if you turn back as you turned back before - He will make you suffer a painful Torment."
17. There is no blame on the blind, the lame, or the sick 'of not participating in the war'. Whoever obeys Allāh and His messenger 'Muhammad', He will admit him into Gardens under which rivers flow. But whoever turns back - He will chastise him with a painful chastisement.
18. Indeed, Allāh is well pleased with the believers for their pledging obedience to you 'Muhammad' under the tree. He knew whatever was in their hearts (of sincerity, and truthfulness), so He sent down tranquility on them, and rewarded them with a near victory -
19. And many spoils of war that they will gain. For Allāh is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
20. Allāh promised you abundant spoils that you will yet gain. He hastened on this one9 for you, and held back the hands of people from you, so that it 'these victories' may be a Sign for the believers and guide you to a straight Path.
9. The spoils of Khaybar.
On the day (of the battle) of Khaibar the Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Tomorrow I will give the flag to somebody who will be given victory (by Allah) and who loves Allah and His messenger and is loved by Allah and His messenger." So, the people wondered all that night as to who would receive the flag and in the morning everyone hoped that he would be that person. Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) asked, "Where is `Ali?" He was told that `Ali was suffering from eye-trouble, so he applied saliva to his eyes and invoked Allah to cure him. He at once got cured as if he had no ailment. The Prophet (ﷺ) gave him the flag. `Ali said, "Should I fight them till they become like us (i.e. Muslim)?" The Prophet (ﷺ) said, "Go to them patiently and calmly till you enter the land. Then, invite them to Islam, and inform them what is enjoined upon them, for, by Allah, if Allah gives guidance to somebody through you, it is better for you than possessing red camels (which the Arabs considered the most valuable wealth at that time).
21. 'He promises' other 'victories' which you have not yet been able to achieve, Allāh has already encompassed them. For Allāh is Ever Able to do all things.
22. If the unbelievers fight with you, they would certainly turn 'their' backs, then they would not find any protector or helper.
23. Such has been the Way of Allāh with those that have passed away before. Never will you find in the Way of Allāh any change.
