17 : 68

إِنَّا بَلَوۡنَٰهُمۡ كَمَا بَلَوۡنَآ أَصۡحَٰبَ ٱلۡجَنَّةِ إِذۡ أَقۡسَمُواْ لَيَصۡرِمُنَّهَا مُصۡبِحِينَ

17. Indeed, We have tested those (pagans) as We tested the owners of the garden, when they swore they would surely harvest all its fruit in the (early) morning, info

18 : 68

وَلَا يَسۡتَثۡنُونَ

18. And they not make any exception (by saying Insha Allāh) [5]. info

[5]. By saying if Allāh wills, or without leaving some for the poor.

19 : 68

فَطَافَ عَلَيۡهَا طَآئِفٞ مِّن رَّبِّكَ وَهُمۡ نَآئِمُونَ

19. So there came upon it (the garden) a (destructive) visitation from your Lord while they were sleeping. info

20 : 68

فَأَصۡبَحَتۡ كَٱلصَّرِيمِ

20. So it became as reaped (black, barren land). info

21 : 68

فَتَنَادَوۡاْ مُصۡبِحِينَ

21. And they called one another at (early) morning, info

22 : 68

أَنِ ٱغۡدُواْ عَلَىٰ حَرۡثِكُمۡ إِن كُنتُمۡ صَٰرِمِينَ

22. That, "Go forth early upon your tillage, if you want to pluck (the produce).” info

23 : 68

فَٱنطَلَقُواْ وَهُمۡ يَتَخَٰفَتُونَ

23. So they set out, whispering to one another, info

24 : 68

أَن لَّا يَدۡخُلَنَّهَا ٱلۡيَوۡمَ عَلَيۡكُم مِّسۡكِينٞ

24. "Let no poor person enter upon you (into the garden) this day (to ask for help).” info

25 : 68

وَغَدَوۡاْ عَلَىٰ حَرۡدٖ قَٰدِرِينَ

25. And they went forth early morning in determination (thinking themselves) able [6]. info

[6]. To carry out their plan to keep the poor away, confident of their ability, thinking that they have powers to prevent the poor from taking any of the fruits.

26 : 68

فَلَمَّا رَأَوۡهَا قَالُوٓاْ إِنَّا لَضَآلُّونَ

26. But when they saw it [utterly destroyed], they said: "We have surely gone astray." info

بَلۡ نَحۡنُ مَحۡرُومُونَ

27. Rather, We are deprived (of the fruits). info

28 : 68

قَالَ أَوۡسَطُهُمۡ أَلَمۡ أَقُل لَّكُمۡ لَوۡلَا تُسَبِّحُونَ

28. The most moderate of them said: "Did I not tell you why do you not glorify (Allāh)?" info

29 : 68

قَالُواْ سُبۡحَٰنَ رَبِّنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا ظَٰلِمِينَ

29. They said: "Glory be to our Lord - we have been unjust." info

فَأَقۡبَلَ بَعۡضُهُمۡ عَلَىٰ بَعۡضٖ يَتَلَٰوَمُونَ

30. Then they turned on each other, throwing blame. info

قَالُواْ يَٰوَيۡلَنَآ إِنَّا كُنَّا طَٰغِينَ

31. They said: "Woe to us, we were certainly transgressors." info

32 : 68

عَسَىٰ رَبُّنَآ أَن يُبۡدِلَنَا خَيۡرٗا مِّنۡهَآ إِنَّآ إِلَىٰ رَبِّنَا رَٰغِبُونَ

32. Perhaps our Lord will substitute for us a better [garden] than it. We are turning to our Lord in hope) [7]. info

[7]. Of His mercy, forgiveness, and bounty.

33 : 68

كَذَٰلِكَ ٱلۡعَذَابُۖ وَلَعَذَابُ ٱلۡأٓخِرَةِ أَكۡبَرُۚ لَوۡ كَانُواْ يَعۡلَمُونَ

33. Such is the torment (of this life), and the torment of the Hereafter is greater - if only they knew. info

34 : 68

إِنَّ لِلۡمُتَّقِينَ عِندَ رَبِّهِمۡ جَنَّٰتِ ٱلنَّعِيمِ

34. Indeed, the righteous shall have near their Lord 'Allāh'.gardens of Bliss. info

35 : 68

أَفَنَجۡعَلُ ٱلۡمُسۡلِمِينَ كَٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ

35. Shall We then treat the Muslims (who submit to God’s will) as the wicked. info

مَا لَكُمۡ كَيۡفَ تَحۡكُمُونَ

36. What is the matter with you (pagans)? How do you judge? info

أَمۡ لَكُمۡ كِتَٰبٞ فِيهِ تَدۡرُسُونَ

37. Or you (pagans) have a Book wherein you study, info

38 : 68

إِنَّ لَكُمۡ فِيهِ لَمَا تَخَيَّرُونَ

38. That indeed for you therein is whatever you choose? info

39 : 68

أَمۡ لَكُمۡ أَيۡمَٰنٌ عَلَيۡنَا بَٰلِغَةٌ إِلَىٰ يَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِيَٰمَةِ إِنَّ لَكُمۡ لَمَا تَحۡكُمُونَ

39. Or for you are oaths binding upon us, extending until the Day of Resurrection, that indeed for you is whatever you judge? info

40 : 68

سَلۡهُمۡ أَيُّهُم بِذَٰلِكَ زَعِيمٌ

40. Ask them (O Muhammad) which of them is for that (claim) guarantor? info

41 : 68

أَمۡ لَهُمۡ شُرَكَآءُ فَلۡيَأۡتُواْ بِشُرَكَآئِهِمۡ إِن كَانُواْ صَٰدِقِينَ

41. Or do they have associate-gods? Then let them bring their associate-gods [8], if they are truthful. info

[8]. I.e., those to whom they attribute divinity other than Allāh, or partners to Him from among themselves.

42 : 68

يَوۡمَ يُكۡشَفُ عَن سَاقٖ وَيُدۡعَوۡنَ إِلَى ٱلسُّجُودِ فَلَا يَسۡتَطِيعُونَ

42. On the Day when the Shin will be bared [9], and they (the deniers and hypocrites) will be called upon to prostrate, but they will not be able to do so [10], info

[9]. In accordance with authentic ḥadīths: "The Shin" here refers to that of Allāh, before which every believer will prostrate on the Day of Judgement. Another meaning of the verse: When legs are bared and everyone will find before him great difficulty.
[10]. As they failed to do so willingly in this worldly life.
