1. O prophet, why do you forbid (yourself from) what Allāh has made lawful for you, seeking to please your wives? Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
3. The Prophet confided to some of his wives¹ a statement. When she told of it², and Allāh made it known to him; he disclosed part of it and ignored a part. When he informed her about it, she said: "Who told you this?" He said: "I was informed by 'Allāh' the All-Knowing,
All-Aware."
4. In case you both³ repent to Allāh 'you have cause to do so', since your hearts have inclined⁴; and if you back up each other against him (the Prophet, in what he is averse to), then Allāh is His guardian, Gabriel, the righteous among the believers, and the angels furthermore are (his) backers.
3. i.e., Hafsah and ‘Aishah, the Prophet’s wives.
4. Because of your endeavour for the prohibition of Mariya, despite the Prophet’s dislike to do so.
5. Perhaps his Lord 'Allāh', if he (the Prophet) were to divorce you, will give him in your place wives better than you - who are Muslims, believers, obedient, repentant, dedicated to worship, fasting and serving in missionary works5 - ones previously married and virgins.
5. In da'wah works, woman is like man, she has her duty to preach to Allah and deny evil, because the teachings apply to everyone, the Quran applies to everyone, the Sunnah applies to everyone. She must call to Allah, enjoin what is right and forbid what is wrong, according to the Islamic decency that is required of a man. She must also be an example in chastity, and in observing Hijab from non-Mahram men, and avoiding displaying her beauty and reprehensible mixing. Her preaching should be far from anything that would denounce her acts. If she preaches men, she calls them while wearing Hijab and without being alone with them.
In the previous Scriptures before the Qur’an we also read:
Timothy 2: 11-12, “A woman should learn in quietness and full submission. I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent.” This clearly precludes women from serving as teaching pastors over men. Women are encouraged to teach other women.
Due to the inherent dangers of missionary work, it is usually best for women not to serve as missionaries on their own. Husband-and-wife teams and/or teams of women partnering with men and/or other women seem to be the best setup for da'wah work. But in no sense should this discourage women from da'wah work. Allāh calls women, single and married, to serve Him on the mission field. And Allāh often uses women preaches in powerful and amazing ways.
6. O believers, save yourselves and your families from a Fire which is fueled by people and stones6 and guarded by angels stern and strong, who do not disobey Allāh in whatever He commands them, and do as they are commanded.
6. I.e., the idols they make for themselves to worship instead of Allāh and the people who worship them.
8. O believers, turn to Allāh in sincere repentance. Perhaps your Lord 'Allāh' will remove from you your misdeeds and admit you to Gardens under which rivers flow. On the Day which Allāh will not disgrace the Prophet and those who have believed in him. Their light will shine in front of them and to their right7. they will say: "Our Lord, make perfect for us our light8, and forgive our sins, for You are Able to do all things."
7. Will be their books of deeds, with every bit of good they did in this life recorded therein.
8. To safely cross the bridge over Hell.
10. Allāh sets forth an example to those who disbelieve: The spouse of Noah and the spouse of Lot. They were under (i.e., married to) two of Our righteous servants, but they betrayed them9, so they availed them nothing against Allāh, and it was said: "Enter the Fire with those who enter."
9. In the matter of religion, for they both were disbelievers.
11. Allāh also sets forth an example for those who believe: The spouse of Pharaoh when she said: "My Lord, build for me a house near to You in Paradise, and deliver me from Pharaoh and his (bloody) work, and deliver me from the unjust people10."
10. The men who attained religious and moral perfection are many. Some reached the common level of perfection such as scholars, righteous men, and pious allies of Allah. Others reached the most sublime levels of perfection such as the prophets. However, there are very few women who attained perfection; on top of which were Āsiyah bint Muzāhim, the wife of Pharaoh, Mary, the mother of Jesus, Khadeejah bint Khuwaylid, the wife of Prophet Muhammad, Faatimah bint Muhammad, and ‘Ā'ishah bint Abi Bakar, may Allāh be pleased with them all.
The prophet said, "Faatimah is the head of the women of Paradise".
12. And Maryam10, the daughter of Imran11, who guarded her chastity, so We breathed into her (garment) through Our angel (Gabriel), and she believed in the Words of her Lord 'Allāh' and His books, and she was one of the devoutly obedient.
