1. O prophet (and believers), when you (intend to) divorce women, divorce them at a time after which they can start their waiting period appointed for them¹. Count (accurately) the waiting period2, and fear Allāh - your Lord. Do not drive them (the wives) out of their houses, nor should they go out (from their houses during their waiting period), unless they commit proven indecency. These are the Laws set by Allāh. Whoever goes beyond the boundaries (Laws) of Allāh - has sinned against himself. You do not know that Allāh may after that, bring about some situation (of reconciliation).
1. I.e., after the completion of her menstrual period but before sexual intercourse has occurred, or during pregnancy.
2. I.e., three menstrual periods.
2. When their waiting period is about to end, keep them or separate from them lawfully. Let two just men from among you witness the divorce2, and give upright testimony for Allāh. Thus he who believes in Allāh and the Last Day is admonished. Whoever fears Allāh and keeps His Commandments, He will make for him a way out (of every difficulty),
2. A single witness shall not suffice against a person for any incident, crime, or for any wrong in connection with any offense that is committed. Only on the evidence of two witnesses or of four witnesses with regards of adultery and fornication shall a charge be established. In some cases single witness with taking an oath may be accepted. If a malicious witness arises to accuse a person of wrongdoing, then both parties to the dispute shall appear before the judges who are in office. The judges shall inquire diligently, and if the witness is a false witness and has accused his brother falsely, then you shall punish him for his false testimony.
3. And will provide him from where he does not expect. Whoever trusts in Allāh, He is Enough for him. Indeed, Allāh accomplishes His Purpose. Allāh has already set for everything a decreed extent.
4. As for those of your women who have despaired of menstruation, if you have doubt about it, their waiting period shall be three months, and of those too who have not had their (monthly menstrual) courses. As for the pregnant women, their waiting period is until they give birth. Whoever fears Allāh and keeps His Commandments, He will make matters easy for him.
5. This is the Command of Allāh, which He has sent down to you. Whoever fears Allāh and keeps His Commandments, He will remove from him his misdeeds, and magnify his reward.
6. Lodge them (your wives) where you dwell according to your means, and do not harm them in order that you may straiten life for them3. If they are pregnant, spend on them until they give birth; then if they breastfeed for you, give them their wages, and consult among yourselves lawfully. If you are in discord, then there may breastfeed for the father another woman.
3. To oblige them to leave or to ransom themselves.
7. Let him who has abundance spend out of his abundance, and he whose resources are limited (poor), let him spend out of that which Allāh has given him. Allāh does not lay on any soul a burden except to the extent to which He has granted it. Allāh will bring about ease after hardship.
8. How many a (people of) town rebelled against the Command of its Lord 'Allāh' and His messengers, so We took it to severe account and tormented it with a terrible torment.
10. Allāh has prepared for them a severe torment, so fear Allāh and keep to His Commandments, O you of sound understanding, who have faith. Allāh has sent down to you a Reminder (this Qur’an).
11. (And has sent to you) a messenger4 who recites to you the Verses of Allāh (the Qur’an) containing clear explanations, so that He may bring those who believe and do righteous deeds out of darknesses into light. Whoever believes in Allāh and does righteous deeds, He will admit him into Gardens under which rivers flow, to abide therein forever - Allāh has indeed given him a goodly provision.
12. It is Allāh Who has created seven heavens, and of the earth the like of them. (His) Command descends among them, so that you may know that Allāh has Power over all things, and that Allāh indeed encompasses all things in Knowledge.
