Al-A‘rāf

1. Alif, Laam, Meem, Saad.¹
1. The Qur’an is made up of such letters from the Arabic alphabet. The Arabs at the time of revelation were the unmatched masters of the Arabic language and yet when challenged were totally unable to bring anything like the Qur’an. Although these disjointed Arabic letters are referring to the inimitable nature of the Qur’an and its divine source, God knows best its meaning.
2. (This is) a Book revealed to you 'O Muhammad' - so let there be no anxiety in your chest regarding it, that you may warn thereby, and it is a reminder to the believers.
3. Follow (you people) what has been sent down to you 'of revelation' from (Allāh) your Lord, and do not follow any (lords, saints, and) guardians² besides Him. Little do you take heed.
2. false deities.
4. How many a town have We destroyed (for their sins), so Our torment came to it3 by night or during their midday break.
3. Allāh, the All-Just, will only inflict punishment on those whom He forewarned and who were made aware of their wrongs through the communication of the Message and warning.
5. Yet their cry, when Our torment came to them, was nothing but that they said: "we were certainly unjust."
6. We will certainly question those to whom (the messengers) were sent, and We will question the messengers;
7. We will relate to them (their whole story) with knowledge, for We were not absent.
8. (Every one's deeds) on that Day will be justly weighed (and evaluated). As for the one whose scales (of good deeds) is heavy, it is they who will be prosperous;
9. As for him whose scales (of good deeds) is light, they are the ones who will lose themselves (by entering Hell), for wrongfully dealing with Our revelations4.
4. Allāh would never leave people in the dark without showing them His evidences, but it is up to them to believe or deny.
10. We have certainly established you on the earth, and made in it means of livelihood for you. Little it is that you give thanks (to Allāh).
11. We have indeed created you (mankind), then We formed you, then We said to the angels: "Prostrate to Adam". So they prostrated except Iblees (Satan); he was not of those who prostrated.
12. 'Allāh' said: "What made you disobey me so that you did not prostrate when I commanded you?" (Satan) said: "I am better than him 'Adam'. You created me from fire, and created him from clay."
13. 'Allāh' said: "Then descend from it (i.e., Paradise), this is no place for you to be proud. So get out, indeed you are disgraced.
14. (Satan) said: "Grant me respite until the Day of Resurrection."
15. 'Allāh' said: "You are granted a respite 'untill the appointed Day'."
16. (Satan) said: "That You have made me go astray5, I will certainly sit in wait for them (i.e., mankind) on Your straight Path."
5. By citing predestination, that Allāh had already decreed him to go astray, Satan sets the record for being the first to use the predestination as a pretext for not following Allah’s command as an excuse to justify his rebelliousness against Him.
17. Then I will certainly come to them from before them and from behind them, and from their right and from their left; and You will not find most of them thankful."
18. 'Allāh' said: "Get out of this (Paradise), disgraced, disowned. For whoever of them will follow you, I will certainly fill Gehinnom (Hell) with you all."
19. " Adam, dwell you and your wife (Eve) in the Garden and eat from wherever you please, but do not go near this tree, lest you transgress."
20. Satan tempted them to reveal that which was kept private from them. (Satan) said: "Your Lord 'Allāh' has not forbidden you this tree except that you become angels or immortals."
21. He 'Satan' swore before them saying: "I am a sincere adviser to you."
22. Thus he deceitfully led them to the tree. When they tasted of the tree, their private parts became apparent to them, and they both began to cover themselves with leaves from the Garden. Their Lord 'Allāh' called out to them saying: "Did I not forbid you from that tree and said to you that Satan is an open enemy to you?"
23. They said: "Our Lord 'Allāh', we have transgressed against ourselves, and if You do not forgive us and have Mercy on us, we shall certainly be of the losers6.
6. So Allah forgave them their transgression.
24. (Then, Allāh) said: "Descend (to your destined place: the earth), as enemies to one another7. There is for you in the earth an abode and a provision for a time."
7. I.e., Adam and his offspring to Satan and his minions.
25. 'Allāh' said: "Therein (on earth) you will live, and therein you will die, and from it you will be resurrected."
26. Children of Adam, We have given you clothing to cover your private parts, as well as to be an adornment to you, but the clothing of righteousness - that is best8. These are from the Verses of Allāh - that they may take heed.
8. Instead of striving to clothe ourselves with the world’s latest fashions, we can exchange our striving for the Spirit’s clothing of “love, compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” We can learn patience with each other on our journey to Allāh following the Truth, transforming our hearts - a journey that leads to lasting peace.
27. Children of Adam, do not let Satan seduce you just as he expelled your parents from the Garden, pulling off from them their clothing to expose their private parts to them. Indeed, he sees you, he and his minions, from where you cannot see them. Indeed, we have made the devils guardians to those who do not believe.
28. Whenever they commit indecent acts, they say: "We found our fathers doing it, and Allāh has commanded us to do the same." Say: "Allāh does not command indecency. Do you say against Allāh what you do not know?"
29. Say: "My Lord 'Allāh' has ordered to maintain justice. Direct your faces 'to the Qiblah' at every place 'and time' of prayer. Pray to Allāh sincerely, being devoted in your religion 'of Islam'. Just as He originated you, you will return to life."
30. A group He guided and a group deserve (to be in) error. For they took the devils for guardians instead of Allāh, and they think that they are (rightly) guided.
31. Children of Adam, take your adornment at every place of worship. Eat and drink but do not waste - for He does not like the wasteful.
32. Say: "Who has prohibited the beautiful things, which Allāh has brought forth for His servants and the good foods?" Say: "These are for the believers in the life of this world, exclusively (theirs) on the Day of Resurrection. Thus We detail the Verses for a people who know."
33. Say 'Muhammad': "My Lord 'Allāh' has prohibited only indecent acts, those committed in public or private, and sin9, unjust aggression (against people’s rights), that you worship with Allāh any thing for which He sent down no Authority, and that you say against Allāh what you do not know."
9. Such as drinking alcohol or taking drugs, etc.
34. For every nation there is a term appointed, so when their term has come, they can neither delay it for a moment, nor can they advance it.
35. Children of Adam, when there comes to you messengers from among you relating to you My verses, whoever shuns evil and lives righteously - they shall have no fear nor shall they grieve.
36. But those who reject Our verses (of the Qur'an) and turn away from them out of pride - these are the people of the Fire, they will abide therein forever.
37. Who is more unjust than he who invents a lie against Allāh or rejects His verses? These will have their share (of torment) which has been decreed for them. When Our messengers (the angel of death and his assistants) come to them causing them to die, they will ask: "Where is that which you used to worship besides Allāh?" They would answer: "They have gone away from us," and they will bear witness against themselves that they were deniers.
38. 'Allāh' will say: "Enter you to join the groups who have gone before you of the jinn and men into the Fire." Whenever a group enters, it will curse the other dwellers, until when they are all brought together therein; the last of them will say to the foremost of them: "Our Lord, these are the ones who misled us, so give them a double torment of the Fire. He will say: "For each is double, but you do not know".
39. The foremost of them will say to the last of them: "You are no better than us; so taste the torment for what you used to commit (of sins)."
40. Those who reject Our verses (of the Qur'an) and turn away from them out of pride, the doors of heaven will not be opened for them, nor will they enter Paradise until the camel passes through the eye of a sewing needle. Thus do We recompense the wicked.
41. For them is a cradle of hell-fire and over them are coverings 'of fire'. Thus do We recompense the unjust.
42. But those who believe and do righteous deeds, We do not impose on any person a duty except to the extent of his ability - they are the occupants of Paradise; they will abide therein forever.
43. We shall remove all grudges in their chests10; rivers will flow under them, and they will say: "All praise be to Allāh, Who guided us to this, never could we have found Guidance were it not that Allāh had guided us. The messengers of 'Allāh' our Lord brought the Truth". And they will be called, "This is the Paradise of which you are made heirs for what you used to do (of righteousness)."
10. All the evil thoughts and toxic feelings they might have had, will be removed from their hearts, so that they live in total peace and do not harbour any ill will for each other, especially given that they are of different ranks in Paradise.
44. The occupants of Paradise will call out to the occupants of the Fire: "We have found whatever our Lord 'Allāh' promised us to be true; have you too found what your Lord promised to be true?" They will say: "Yes." Then a caller will announce among them, that the Curse of Allāh is on the workers of iniquity.
45. Those who prevent (people) from God’s Way (Islam) and seek to make it crooked while they are deniers of the Hereafter life.
46. Between them is a barrier, and on the heights there will be men who will know all (of the inhabitants of Paradise and Hell) by their marks, and they will call out to the occupants of Paradise: "Peace be on you." At that time they (those on the heights) will not yet have entered it (Paradise), though they hope to.
47. When their sights are turned towards the occupants of the Fire, they (the people on the heights) will say: "Our Lord, place us not with the unjust people."
48. The people of the heights will call out to men whom they will recognize by their marks (as sinners) saying: "Of no benefit to you were your gathering and amassing (of wealth) and your pride11:"
11. Allāh hates pride; we must learn to hate what Allāh hates and to love what Allāh loves. Clothe ourselves with humility toward one another, because Allāh opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble. Anyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
49. 'Allāh will say': "Are these the ones about whom you once swore that Allāh will not bestow Mercy on them?" Enter Paradise 'O people of the heights'; you shall have no fear, nor shall you grieve.
50. The occupants of Hell shall call out to the occupants of Paradise, saying: "Pour on us some water or any of what Allāh blessed you with. They will say: "Allāh has prohibited them both to the deniers."
51. Those who engage themselves in (sinful) pastime and play, and were deceived by the worldly life12. So today We shall forget them13, as they forgot the Meeting of this Day of theirs and because they used to deny Our verses.
12. One should not love the world or anything in the world more than their love for Allāh and His messenger Muhammad. If anyone loves the world more, the true love of Allāh and His messenger is not in them. 'The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the Will of Allāh and is Muslim will have an ever lasting joy.'
13. I.e., abandon them in the Fire.
52. We have certainly brought them a Book (this Qur’an) which We have made clear with knowledge, a guide and a mercy for a people who believe.
53. Do they wait for anything but its final fulfillment14? On the Day when its final fulfillment comes, those who neglected it before will say: "Indeed the messengers of our Lord 'Allāh' brought the Truth. Are there for us then any intercessors so that they might intercede on our behalf? Or could we be sent back (to our worldly life) so that we might do (deeds) other than those which we used to do?" Indeed they have lost their own selves and that which they invented15 has gone away from them.
14. The coming of Resurrection and Punishment.
15. Invoking and worshipping others besides Allâh.
54. Your Lord is Allāh only, Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days, and then rose over the Throne16. He covers the night over the day in swift pursuit, and (He created) the sun, the moon and the stars, all subservient by His Command. His is the creation and the Command. Blessed is Allāh, the Lord of all beings.
16. ‘Istawa’ literally means rose and ascended in a manner befitting His Majesty, unlike any of His creation.
55. Invoke 'Allāh' your Lord humbly and secretly; He does not like the transgressors.
56. Do not make corruption in the land after its reformation, and invoke 'Allāh' with 'love', fear and hope. the Mercy of Allāh is ever near to the good-doers.
57. It is He 'Allāh' Who sends forth the winds bearing good tidings before His Mercy (the rain), until when they bring up a laden cloud, We drive it to a dead land, then We send down water on it, then bring forth with it of fruits of all kinds. Thus shall We bring forth the dead that you may take heed.
58. The good land, brings forth (abundantly) its plants by the Permission of 'Allāh' its Lord, but that which is bad (its plants) comes forth but poorly. Thus do We diversify the Verses 'of the Qur’an' for a people who give thanks.
59. Indeed, We sent Noah to his people, he said: "My people, worship Allāh alone, you have no god other than Him. I fear for you the torment of a grievous Day."
60. The eminent ones of his people said: "We certainly see you in clear error."
61. 'Noah' said: "My people, I am not in any error, rather I am a messenger from 'Allāh' the Lord of all beings."
62. I convey to you the Messages of 'Allāh' my Lord, and give you good advice, and I know from Allāh what you do not know.
63. Does it seem strange to you that a reminder has come to you from 'Allāh' your Lord through a man from among you, that he might warn you, and that you might fear Allāh and shun evil, so that you may receive (His) Mercy?
64. They denied him, so We delivered him and those with him in the ark, and We drowned those who rejected Our revelations; they were a blind people.
65. To (the people of) ‘Aad (We sent) their brother Hud. He said: "My people, worship Allāh alone, you have no god (worthy of worship) other than Him. Will you not then fear Allāh and shun evil?
66. The eminent ones of those who denied from among his people said: "We see you in foolishness, and we think that you are of the liars."
67. 'Hud' said: "My people, there is no foolishness in me, but I am a messenger from 'Allāh' the Lord of all beings.
68. I convey to you the Messages of 'Allāh' my Lord and I am a faithful adviser to you.
69. Does it seem strange to you that a Message has come to you from 'Allāh' your Lord through a man from among you that he might warn you (from Allah’s Chastisement)? Remember when He made you successors after Noah’s people and increased you greatly in stature; so praise 'Allah’s Name' and glorify Him for His blessings with thanksgiving - that you may
succeed and prosper.
70. They said: "Have you come to us that we may worship Allāh alone, and give up what our fathers used to worship?" Then bring to us what you threaten us with, if you are truthful.
71. He said: "Indeed defilement and wrath from 'Allāh' your Lord have fallen upon you. Do you dispute with me about names (of idols that you worship) which you and your fathers have made up? Allāh has not sent any Authority for them. Wait then (for the chastisement), I too with you will be of those who wait (for that, because of your denial of me)."
72. So We delivered him and those with him as a Mercy from Us, and We cut off to the very last of those who rejected Our revelations and were not believers.
73. And to 'the people of' Thamud-'We sent' their brother Salih. He said: "My people, worship Allāh alone, you have no god 'worthy of worship' other than Him. Clear Proof indeed has come to you from 'Allāh' your Lord. This she-camel of Allāh, a Sign for you, so leave her alone to pasture on Allah’s earth, and do not touch her with any harm, otherwise a painful torment will seize you."
74. Remember when He made you successors to 'the people of' ‘Aad and gave you habitations in the land - you make mansions on its plains, and carve out houses in the mountains - so remember Allah’s bounties 'upon you', and do not act corruptly in the land, making mischief.
75. The eminent ones who were arrogant among his people said to those who were considered weak - those among them who believed: "Do you know that Salih is sent by his Lord 'Allāh'?" They said: "We are believers in what he has been sent with."
76. Those who were arrogant said: "We are deniers of what you believe in."
77. So they hamstrung the she-camel and insolently defied the Command of their Lord 'Allāh', and said: "Salih, Bring us what you threatened us with, if you are truly a messenger 'of God'."
78. Then the (deadly) earthquake overtook them, and they became within their home (corpses) fallen prone.
79. So he turned away from them and said: "My people, I did certainly convey to you the Message of 'Allāh' my Lord, and I gave you good advice, but you do not like 'sincere' advisers.
80. And 'We sent' Lot when he said to his people: "Do you commit such indecency as none in all the world has ever done before you?
81. You approach men lustfully instead of women. Rather, you are a transgressing people."
82. The answer of his people was no other than that they said: "Turn them (Lot and his family) out of your town, for they are a people who seek to purify themselves."
83. So We delivered him and his family, except his spouse; she was of those who remained behind (and perished).
84. We rained upon them a rain (of stones). Consider how was the end of the wicked.
85. And to (the people of) Midian (We sent) their brother Shu’aib. He said: "My people, worship Allāh alone, you have no god (worthy of worship) other than Him. Clear Proof indeed has come to you from "Allāh' your Lord. Maintain proper measure and weight in trade. Do not deprive people of their due17, and do not cause corruption in the land after its reform. This is better for you, if you are true believers.
17. By unfair and illegal taxes and interests.
86. Do not sit (in ambush) at every path, threatening and turning away from Allah’s Way him who believes in Him, seeking to make it crooked. Recall the time when you were few and Allāh multiplied you. Consider what was the end of the corrupters.
87. If there is a party of you who believes in the Message which I have been sent with, and a party who do not believe, then wait patiently until Allāh judges between us - He is the Best of the judges.
88. The eminent ones who were arrogant among his people said: "We shall certainly expel you out, Shu’aib, and (also) those who believe with you from our town, or you shall come back to our faith (and way of life)." He said: "Even though we dislike it (will you force us)?"
89. We would have invented a lie against Allāh if we go back to your faith (and way of life) when Allāh delivered us from it. We would not ever go back to it unless Allāh, our Lord, so wills18. Our Lord, comprehends all things in His Knowledge (and Power). In Allāh (alone) do we put our complete trust. Our Lord, decide between us and our people with Truth; for You are the Best of the arbiters.
18. All creatures are subject to the will of Almighty Allāh, Who knows everything present, past and future.
90. The eminent ones who denied among his people said: "If you follow Shu’aib, you shall certainly be losers."
91. Then the (deadly) earthquake overtook them, and they became within their home (corpses) fallen prone.
92. Those who denied Shu’aib were as though they had never dwelt therein. Those who denied Shu’aib, they were the losers.
93. So he turned away from them and said: "My people, I certainly conveyed to you the Messages of 'Allāh' my Lord, and I gave you good advice. How shall I then be sorry for a denying people?
94. We sent no Prophet to any town (and they denied him) except that We seized its people with poverty and period of sickness in order that they might humble themselves (and repent to Allāh).
95. Then We replaced the bad (condition) with good (condition) until they prospered and (dismissively) said: "Our fathers (also) were touched with hardship, and ease. So We took them by surprise while they did not perceive it.
96. If the people of the towns had believed19 and abstained from 'all appearance of' evil, We would certainly have opened up for them blessings from the heaven and the earth, but they denied, so We seized them (with torment) for what they used to commit (of sins).
19. Followed the messengers of God that were sent to them.
97. Do the people of the towns then feel secure from Our wrath coming to them by night while they sleep?
98. Do the people of the towns feel secure from Our wrath coming to them in the early morning while they are playing?
99. Do they then feel secure from God's plotting?20 But none feels secure from God's plotting except the people who will perish.
20. That is, His drawing them on by degrees, through graces, and then seizing them suddenly with His Mighty Power.
100. Is it not clear to those who inherited the earth after its 'former' residents that if We so willed, We would have smitten them for their sins and set a seal on their hearts so that they could not hear.
101. These towns - We relate to you some of their stories, and certainly their messengers came to them with clear Proofs, but they would not believe in what they denied before. Thus does Allāh set a seal over the hearts of the deniers.
102. We did not find in most of them any (faithfulness to their) covenant. We found most of them to be sinful.
103. Then We sent after them Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his council, but they unjustly rejected them. So see how was the end of the corrupters?
104. Moses said: "Pharaoh, I am truly a messenger from "Allāh' the Lord of all beings.
105. I am obliged to say nothing about Allāh except the Truth. I have come to you with clear Proof from your Lord, so let the children of Israel go free with me."
106. (Pharaoh) said: "If you have come with a Sign, then bring it if you are truthful."
107. So Moses threw his rod, then at once it was a snake, manifest (for all to see).
108. He drew out his hand, and at once it was white (with radiance) for the beholders.
109. The eminent ones of Pharaoh’s people said: "This is a knowledgeable sorcerer.
110. He wants to expel you from your land (through his sorcery). So What do you instruct?'
111. They said: "Postpone (the matter of) him (Moses) and his brother (Aaron), and send collectors into the cities,
112. That they may bring to you every knowledgeable magician."
113. The magicians came to Pharaoh (and) said: "Indeed, there is a reward for us, if we are the prevailing ones."
114. (Pharaoh) said: "Yes, and you will certainly be of those who are close 'to me'.
115. They said: "Moses, will you cast, or shall we be the first to cast?"
116. (Moses) said: "Cast." So when they cast, they deceived the people’s eyes and frightened them, and they produced great magic.
117. We inspired to Moses, saying: "Cast your rod," and at once it devoured what they were falsifying.
118. Thus the Truth prevailed, and their false art was vanished.
119. They (Pharaoh and his people) were overcome right there, and became utterly humiliated.
120. And the magicians fell down prostrating (themselves to Allāh).
121. They said: "We believe in 'Allāh' the Lord of all beings,
122. The Lord of Moses and Aaron."
123. Pharaoh said:"Do you believe in 'Allāh' before I have given you permission? This is a plot which you have secretly plotted in the city, that you may turn out its people, but you shall know (its consequences).
124. I will certainly cut off your hands and your feet on opposite sides, then I will crucify you all together."
125. They said: "Indeed, to 'Allāh' our 'True' Lord do we return;
126. You do not take revenge on us except because we have believed in the Signs of 'Allāh' our Lord when they came to us. Our Lord, pour upon us patience and cause us to die as Muslims 'submitters to God's will'.
127. The eminent ones of Pharaoh’s people said: "Will you leave Moses and his people to cause corruption in the land and forsake you and your gods?" (Pharaoh) said: "We will kill their sons and spare their women, and we are certainly masters over them."
128. Moses said to his people: "Ask Help from Allāh and be patient. The land belongs to Allāh; He causes to inherit it whom He wills among His servants. The 'best' outcome is for the righteous."
129. They said: "We were oppressed before you came to us and since you have come to us." Moses said: "It may be that 'Allāh' your Lord will destroy your enemy, and make you rulers in the land, then He will see how you act."
130. We certainly seized Pharaoh’s people with droughts and shortness of fruits (produce) that they may take heed.
131. But when good befell them they said: "This is deservedly ours." Yet when a bad (condition) afflict them, they would blame their evil fortune on Moses and those with him. Indeed, their evil fortune is decreed by Allāh, but most of them do not know.
132. They said: "Whatever sign you may bring to us to bewitch us with - we shall not believe in you."
133. So We sent upon them flood21, locusts, lice, frogs22 and the blood23, clear signs; but they were arrogant, and were wicked people.
21. And widespread death of cattle and crops.
22. That swarmed over the land and the people of Egypt.
23. The changing of Egypt's waters into blood.
134. When the plague fell upon them, they said: "Moses, pray for us to 'Allāh' your Lord by what He has promised you, if you remove the plague from us, we shall certainly believe in you and permit you and the children of Israel to leave freely."
135. But when We removed the plague from them till a term they had to reach, then at once they broke 'their promise'.
136. So We inflicted retribution on them, and drowned them in the sea, for they denied Our signs and were heedless of them.
137. We gave the suppressed people the eastern and the western parts of the lands which We had blessed24. Thus the good Word of 'Allāh' your Lord was fulfilled for the children of Israel, because they endured (their sufferings) patiently. We utterly destroyed what Pharaoh and his people had worked and what they built.
24. I.e., the region of Palestine, Jordan, and Syria.
138. We helped the children of Israel to pass the sea. Then they came upon a people who kept to the worship of their idols. They said: "Moses, make for us a god as they have (their) gods25." He said: "You are an ignorant people who know not26.'
25. A companion of the Prophet said: We went out from Makkah with the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) to Hunayn and we were new in Islam at that time. The pagans had a tree to which they would go and spend time (to seek blessings) and they used to hang their things on it, and it was called Dhaat Anwaat. We passed by a large green tree and we said: ‘O Messenger of God, make for us a dhaat anwaat.’ The Messenger of God (peace and blessings upon him) said: ‘By the One in Whose hand is my soul, you have said the same as the people of Moses said: make for us a god as they have gods. Verily you are a people who know not. These are ways that you will certainly follow as did those who came before you, step by step.’
We learn from this to beware of polytheism (associating others with Allāh in worship) and that a person may think that something is good and will bring him closer to Allāh, when it is as far removed as it can be from the mercy of his Lord and will bring him closer to His wrath. Seeking blessings from trees and rocks and rivers and being attached to them are all acts of idolatry.
26. The Majesty and Greatness of Allāh and what is obligatory upon you, i.e. to worship none but Allāh, the One and the Only true God of all that exists.
139. These people will be destroyed for that which they are engaged in (of idol-worship), and all that they are doing (of what they deem to be good of idolatry) is in vain27."
27. Seeking blessings is something determined by Allāh and no one can change it, alter it or add anything to it. The permissible ways of seeking blessings that are mentioned in the Scripture are as follows:
a) Seeking blessings through Zam Zam water, and the black stone.
b) Times: the month of Ramadan, the night of Decree, and the first ten days of Thul-Hijjah.
c) Places: Makkah, Madeenah and Jerusalem mosques.
d) Actions: Prayer, fasting alms, etc.
What is not mentioned in the legislation as being permissible to seek blessings with is forbidden. For instance: In human beings: like the saints and pious people.
Times, like the night of Ascension and the night of the birth of the Prophet .
Places: like graves and the like.
Actions: like innovations and newly introduced matters.
The blessings of Allāh, may He be exalted, can only be sought by obeying Allāh and obeying His messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him). That is achieved by doing what is enjoined and refraining from what is forbidden, and hastening to repent and seek forgiveness in the event of any shortcoming in doing what is obligatory or falling into anything that has been forbidden.
140. (Moses) said: "Shall I seek for you a god other than Allāh while He has favored you above (all) other people 'in your time'?"
141. (Recall, children of Israel) when We delivered you from Pharaoh’s people who subjected you to severe torment, killing your sons and sparing your women, and in this there was a great trial from your Lord.
142. We appointed for Moses thirty nights and completed it with ten (more), so the appointed time of his Lord 'Allāh' was a complete forty nights. Moses said to his brother Aaron: "Take my place among my people in my absence, and act well and do not follow the way of the corrupters."
143. When Moses came at Our appointed time, and his Lord 'Allāh' spoke to him, he said: "Lord, show me (Yourself), so that I may look upon You." 'Allāh' said: "You cannot (bear to) see Me, but look at the mountain, if it remains firm in its place, then you shall see Me." So when his Lord 'Allāh' appeared to the mountain He made it collapse to dust, and Moses fell down unconscious; then when he recovered, he said: "Glory be to You 'O Allāh', I turn to You in repentance, and I am the first of the believers."
144. 'Allāh' said: "Moses, I have chosen you above the people with My messages and with My words, so take hold of the Torah I give to you, and be thankful (to Us)."
145. We wrote for him in the tablets admonition of every kind and a clear explanation of all things; so take hold of them with determination, and order your people to take hold of what is best thereof. Soon shall I show you the home of the wicked (how they lie desolate).
146. I will turn away from My signs those who are arrogant on the earth without right. If they see every sign they will not believe in it. If they see the way of righteousness they will not take it, but if they see the way of error, they will take it. For they denied Our signs and were heedless of them.
147. Those who deny Our revelations and the Meeting of the Hereafter, vain are their deeds. Are they recompensed for anything except what they used to do (of evil).
148. In his absence, Moses’s people took (for worship) a golden calf of their ornaments, a (mere) body, which gave a (cow-like) sound. Did they not see that it could neither speak to them nor guide them to the right way? They took it (for worship) and they were unjust.
149. When they regretted and saw that they had gone astray, they said: "If 'Allāh' our Lord does not have Mercy on us and forgive us, we shall certainly be losers.
150. When Moses returned to his people, angry and grieved, he said: "Evil is it that you have done after me. Did you hasten and turn away from the worship of 'Allāh' your Lord?" He threw down the tablets and seized his brother by the head, dragging him towards him. 'Aaron' said: "Son of my mother, the people reckoned me weak and were about to kill me. Do not make the enemies rejoice over me and do not place me among the unjust people.
151. (Moses) said: "Lord 'Allāh', forgive me and my brother 'Aaron', and admit us into Your Mercy, for You are the Most Merciful of the merciful."
152. Those who took the golden calf (for a god), Wrath from their Lord 'Allāh' and disgrace in this worldly life shall inflict them. Thus do We recompense the inventors (of falsehood).
153. But (for) those who do evil deeds, then repent after that and believe (in the Truth) - your Lord 'Allāh' after that, is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
154. When Moses’s anger calmed down, he took up the tablets. In their inscription there was guidance and mercy for those who revere their Lord 'Allāh alone'.
155. Moses chose of his people seventy men for Our appointment. When the earthquake overtook them, he said: "Lord 'Allāh', If You had willed, You could have taken them away before and myself (too). Will you let us perish for what the fools among us have done? It is only Your trial by which You send astray whom You will, and guide whom You will. You are our Guardian, so forgive us and have mercy on us, for You are the Best of forgivers.
156. Ordain for us good in this worldly life and in the Hereafter, we have returned to You repentant. 'Allāh' said: "My torment, I will afflict with it whom I will, yet My mercy encompasses all things. I will ordain it (especially) for those who keep My commandments, (who pray), pay the poor-rate, and believe in Our Verses 'of the Qur’an'.
157. Those who follow the Messenger - the unlettered Prophet (Muhammad), whom they find written (and described) in the Torah28 and the Evangel29 with them. He orders them what is right (and just) and forbids them from what is wrong (and unjust). He makes the pure things lawful for them and forbids for them the impure things, removes their burdens (and limitations which are like) chains upon them. Those who believe in him, honor and help him, and follow the Light (the Qur’an) which has been sent down with him - these are the successful and prosperous.
28. Deut, 18, 15.
29. John 14, 16.
158. Say, 'Muhammad': "O people, I am the messenger of Allāh to you all, of Him to Whom belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth, there is no god (worthy of worship) except Him. He gives life and causes death. So believe in Allāh and His messenger, the unlettered Prophet, who believes in Allāh and His Words, and follow him so that you may be 'rightly' guided."30
30. If you declare with your mouth, that “there is no god except Allāh and that Mohammad is God's servant and messenger”, and believe that in your heart, you will be saved from the Hellfire and admitted to Paradise.

159. Of Moses’s people was a party who guided (people) with the Truth, and established justice thereby.
160. We divided them into twelve tribes, as nations; and We inspired Moses when his people asked him for water: "Strike the rock with your staff," so there gushed forth from it twelve springs. Each tribe knew its drinking place. We made the clouds to give shade over them, and we sent to them manna and quails: Eat of the good things We have given you - they did not do Us any harm, but they did injustice to their own selves.
161. When it was said to them: "Dwell in this town (Jerusalem), and eat from it wherever you wish, and say: Put down from us our heavy burdens: and enter the gate bowing with humility, We shall forgive you your wrongs. We shall increase the good-doers (in goodness and reward)."
162. But those who were unjust among them changed (the words) for a saying other than that which had been spoken to them; so We sent upon them a plague from the sky for the evil that they were doing.
163. Ask them about the town (Eila) which stood by the sea; when they violated the Sabbath, when their fish came to them openly on the day of their Sabbath, appearing on the surface of the water, but on the day on which they did not keep the Sabbath, they did not come to them. Thus did We try them for their rebelliousness.
164. When a group of them said: "Why do you preach to a people31 whom Allāh is about to destroy or chastise with a severe Chastisement? "They said: "To be free from blame before 'Allāh' your Lord, and that they may shun evil.
31. While we can’t force others to turn from sinful behaviors, we can compassionately confront them. We can “speak the truth in love” so that we both become followers of Prophet Muhammad's example ”.
165. When they forgot what they had been reminded of, We delivered those who forbade evil, and seized those who worked iniquity with a severe torment, for they used to rebel (against Us).
166. When they persisted in doing of what they were prohibited, We  said to them: "Be (you) apes, despised and hated."
167. When 'Allāh' your Lord announced that He would send against them (the unbelieving Jews) those who would subject them to severe suffering until the Day of Resurrection. Your Lord is certainly Quick in punishment, and He is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
168. We split them up on the earth into communities (the Jews, some) of them being righteous and (others) of them falling short. We tried them with blessings and calamities that they might turn (to Allāh in repentance).
169. They were then succeeded by a generation who inherited the Scripture, taking the offer of this lowly life32 saying, "It will be forgiven to us." And if an offer like it comes to them, they will again take it. Was not a covenant taken from them in the Scripture that they would not speak anything about Allāh except the Truth, and they have read what is in the Scripture. The home of the Hereafter is better for those who fear Allāh and shun evil. Do you not then understand?
32. I.e., unlawful gains and pleasures.
170. But those who hold fast33 to the Scripture and keep up the prayer, We do not waste the reward of the reformers.
 33. I.e., take and adhere.
171. When We raised the mountain above them 'the children of Israel' as if it were a dark cloud and they were certain that it would fall upon them, 'and Allāh said': "Take what We have given you 'of the Torah' with determination and remember what is in it that you may guard against evil.
172. When your Lord 'Allāh' brought forth from the loins of the children of Adam their offsprings, and made them bear witness against themselves: 'Am I not your Lord?' They said: "Yes, We bear witness 'to it'." Lest you say on the Day of Resurrection: "We were unaware of this."
173. Or lest you say: "Only our fathers worshipped idols before us, and we as their descendants followed them. Would You destroy us for what the followers of falsehood have done?"
174. Thus do We explain the Verses in detail, so that they may return (to the truth).
175. Relate to them 'O Muhammad' the news of him34 to whom We gave knowledge of Our revelations, but he detached himself from it, so Satan pursued him and he became one of the deviants.
34. A man from the Children of Israel called Balaam, the son of Beor.
176. If We had willed, We would have raised him to an exalted position; but he clung to the earth and followed his (evil) desires. His example is like that of a dog when you chase it away, it pants, and when you leave it alone, it 'still' pants. That is the example of the people who deny Our revelations. Relate the stories so that they may reflect.
177. Evil is the example of the people who reject Our revelations and are unjust to their own selves.
178. Whomever Allāh guides, he is 'rightly' guided; and whomever He leaves astray, these are the losers.
179. We have destined many of the jinn and humans for Gehinnom 'Hell'. They have hearts with which they do not understand, eyes with which they do not see, and ears with which they do not hear35. They are as cattle. Rather, they are worse. These are the heedless ones.
35. As they fail to use their faculties of discernment and understanding which Allāh endowed them with to get at the Truth and follow the guidance of Allāh.
180. Allāh has the Most Beautiful Names, so call upon Him by them36. Leave alone those who violate the sanctity of His names37. They will be recompensed for what they used to do (of evil).
36. Believers are advised to find solace in Allāh and His Most Beautiful Names to suppress all that bears down on their morale and mental peace.
37. I.e., use them improperly or deny them.
181. Of those whom We have created are a people38 who guide with the Truth and thereby establishes justice.
38. The followers of Prophet Muhammad.
182. But those who reject Our revelations, We shall gradually lead them (to destruction) from where they do not know.
183.I grant them respite. My Plan is firm39.
39. Muhammad, the Messenger of God (ﷺ) said: “Allāh gives the wrongful respite, but when He seizes them, He will not let them off”. Then he (ﷺ) recited this verse of the Qur’an: “Such is the seizing of your Lord when He seizes the towns while they are doing wrong. His seizing is painful, severe.” (Qur’an chapter 11: 102).
184. Do they not reflect that there is no unsoundness in their companion 'Muhammad'; he is only a plain warner.
185. Do they not consider the realm of the heavens and the earth and all that Allāh has created, and (think) perhaps their end draws near? What statement would they believe in after this 'Divine Message'.
186. Whoever Allāh leaves astray40, there is no guide for him; and He leaves them alone in their conceit, blindly wandering on.
40. Because of their persistence in evil and rejection of truth.
187. They (the pagans) ask you about the Hour 'of Doom', when will be its taking place? Say, 'Muhammad': "The knowledge of it is only with 'Allāh' my Lord. None but Him shall manifest it at its time. Heavy it is in the heavens and on earth. It will not come on you except all of a sudden." They ask you as if you have good knowledge about it. Say: "Its knowledge is only with Allāh, but most people do not know."
188. Say, 'Muhammad': "I do not control any benefit or harm for my own self except what Allāh wills. Had I known the unseen, I would have had much good, and no harm would have touched me. I am but a warner and a giver of good news 41 to a people who believe (in this Divine Message).
41. Prophet Muhammad is not a miracle weaver nor is he privy to much of the Unseen, unless Allāh allows him it. He is no more than a deliverer of the Message of God. So people need to listen, heed and believe; but only the mindful will benefit from him.
189. It is He 'Allāh' Who created you from a single being 'Adam', and made his mate (Eve) of like nature, so that he may find comfort in her. But when he (man, a pagan) engaged in carnal relations with his wife, she bore a light burden (unnoticed pregnancy) which she had to carry. When 'the baby' grew in her womb, they (husband and wife) both prayed to Allāh, their Lord, (saying): "If You give us a good child, we shall certainly be of the thankful."
190. But when He granted them a good child, they ascribed partners to him in what He granted them42. Exalted be Allāh above all what they associate to Him as partners.
42. I.e., they begun to love the child as much as they love Allāh. Allāh is too exalted to be loved equally to anything else.
191. Do they 'the pagans' associate 'with Allāh' that which does not create anything, while they are themselves created!
192. They have no power to give them help, nor can they help themselves.
193. If you call them to (right) guidance, they will not follow you. It is the same to you whether you invite them or remain silent.
194. Those whom you 'pagans' call upon besides Allāh are slaves (i.e. creations) like you. So call upon them, and let them answer your prayers, if you are truthful.
195. Do they (the idols) have feet with which they walk, hands to hold things, eyes to see, and ears to hear? Say: "Call on your idols for help, then plot against me and give me no respite."
196. My Guardian (Lord, Savior) is Allāh (alone), Who revealed the Book43, and He protects the righteous.
43. The Qur’an, the Gospel, the Torah, the Psalms, among others.
197. The idols whom you (pagans) worship besides Allāh cannot help you, nor they can help themselves.
198. If you call them to guidance, they do not hear; and you see them looking towards you, yet they do not see.
199. Be gracious, enjoin what is good and turn away from the ignorants.
200. If an evil whisper comes to you from Satan, then seek refuge by Allāh. He is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
201. Those who fear Allāh, when an evil whisper comes to them from Satan, they remember Allāh and at once they have insight.
202. But their brethren (who listen to the devils), they increase them in misguidance, then they do not cease.
203. When you 'Muhammad' do not bring them a Sign (which they demanded), they say: "Why do you not seek it?" Say: "I only follow what is revealed to me from 'Allāh' my Lord." These are clear proofs from your Lord and a guidance and a mercy for a people who believe.
204. When the Qur’an is recited, listen to it carefully and remain silent, that you may receive 'Allah’s' Mercy.
205. Remember 'Allāh' your Lord within yourself humbly and fearfully without raising your voice, in the morning and evening, and be not of the heedless ones.
206. Those 'angels' who are near to "Allāh' your Lord do not disdain from worshipping Him. They glorify Him and prostrate themselves (in obedience to Him).
