1. The Qur’an is made up of such letters from the Arabic alphabet. The Arabs at the time of revelation were the unmatched masters of the Arabic language and yet when challenged were totally unable to bring anything like the Qur’an. Although these disjointed Arabic letters are referring to the inimitable nature of the Qur’an and its divine source, God knows best its meaning.
2. (This is) a Book sent down to you (O Muhammad) - so let there be no anxiety in your chest regarding it, that you may warn thereby, and it is a reminder to the believers.
3. Follow (O mankind) what has been sent down to you 'of revelation' from your Lord (Allāh), and do not follow any (deties, lords, and) saints² besides Him. Little do you take heed.
4. How many a (sinful) town have We destroyed, so Our punishment came to it3 by night or while they were taking midday nap.
3. Allāh, the All-Just, will only inflict punishment on those whom He forewarned and who were made aware of their wrongs through the communication of the Message and warning.
11. We have indeed created you (O mankind), then We formed you, then We said to the angels: "Prostrate to Adam". So they prostrated except Iblees 'Satan'; he was not of those who prostrated.
12. (Allāh) said: "What prevented you that you did not prostrate when I commanded you?" 'Satan' said: "I am better than him (Adam). You created me from fire, and created him from clay."
13. (Allāh) said: "Then descend from it (i.e., Paradise), as it is not for you that you be arrogant in it. So get out, indeed, you (are) of the humiliated ones."
16. (Satan) said: "So, for that You have made me go astray5, I will certainly sit in wait for them (i.e., mankind) on Your straight Path."
5. By citing predestination, that Allāh had already decreed him to go astray, Satan sets the record for being the first to use the predestination as a pretext for not following Allah’s command as an excuse to justify his rebelliousness against Him.
17. Then I will certainly come to them from before them and from behind them, and from their right and from their left; and You will not find most of them thankful."
18. (Allāh) said: "So get out of this (Paradise), disgraced, disowned. For whoever of them will follow you, I will certainly fill Gehinnom 'Hell' with you all."
19. "O Adam, dwell you and your wife (Eve) in the Garden and eat from wherever you please, but do not go near this tree, lest you be of the transgressors."
20. Then, Satan whispered to them in order to display to them what was concealed from them of their nakedness. (Satan) said: "Your Lord has not forbidden you this tree except that you become angels or be immortals."
22. Thus he deceitfully led them (to the tree). When they tasted of the tree, their private parts became apparent to them, and they both began to cover themselves with leaves from the Garden. Their Lord called out to them saying: "Did I not forbid you from that tree and said to you that Satan is an open enemy to you?"
24. (Then, Allāh) said: "Descend (to your destined place: the earth), as enemies to one another7. There is for you in the earth an abode and a provision for a time."
7. I.e., Adam and his offspring to Satan and his minions.
26. O children of Adam, We have given you clothing to cover your private parts, as well as to be an adornment to you, but the clothing of righteousness - that is best8. That is from the Verses of Allāh - that they may take heed.
8. Instead of striving only to clothe ourselves with the world’s latest fashions, we can exchange our striving for the Spirit’s clothing of “love, compassion, kindness, humility, gentleness, and patience.” We can learn patience with each other on our journey to Allāh following the Truth brought by Prophet Muhammad from God, transforming our hearts - a journey that leads to lasting peace.
27. O Children of Adam, do not let Satan seduce you just as he expelled your parents from the Garden, pulling off from them their clothing to expose their private parts to them. Indeed, he sees you, he and his tribe, from where you cannot see them. Indeed, we have made the devils guardians to those who do not believe.
28. Whenever they commit indecent acts, they say: "We found our fathers doing it, and Allāh has commanded us to do the same." Say: "Allāh does not command indecency. Do you say against Allāh what you do not know?"
29. Say: "My Lord (Allāh) has ordered to maintain justice. Direct your faces (to the Qiblah) at every place (and time) of prayer. Pray to Him sincerely, being devoted to Him alone in worship. As He originated you so will you return."
30. A group He guided and a group deserved (to be in) error. Surely, they took the devils for masters instead of Allāh, and they think that they are 'rightly' guided.
32. Ask: "Who has prohibited the beautiful things, which Allāh has brought forth for His servants and the good provisions?" Say: "These are for the believers in the life of this world, exclusively 'theirs' on the Day of Resurrection. Thus We detail the Verses for a people who know."
33. Say (O Muhammad): "My Lord 'Allāh' has prohibited only indecent acts, those committed in public or private, and sin9, unjust aggression (against people’s rights), that you associate with Allāh any thing for which He sent down no Authority, and that you say against Allāh what you do not know."
35. O children of Adam, whenever there comes to you messengers from among you relating to you My verses, whoever guards himself against evil and lives righteously - they shall have no fear nor shall they grieve.
36. But those who reject Our verses (of the Qur'an) and act arrogantly towards them - these are the people of the Fire, they will abide therein forever.
37. So, who is more unjust than he who invents a lie against Allāh or rejects His verses? Such people will reach them their share of the Book (i.e., the Book of decrees), untill when Our messengers (the angel of death and his assistants) come to them causing them to die, they will ask: "Where is that which you used to invoke besides Allāh?" They would answer: "They have deserted from us," and they will bear witness against themselves that they were deniers.
38. (Allāh) will say: "Enter among nations that already passed before you of the jinn and men into the Fire." Whenever a nation enters, it will curse its sister-nation , until when they are all brought together therein; the last of them will say to the foremost of them: "Our Lord, these are the ones who misled us, so give them a double torment of the Fire. He will say: "For each is double, but you do not know".
39. And the foremost of them will say to the last of them: "So, you had no any preference over us; so taste the torment for what you used to earn 'of sins'."
40. Those who reject Our verses 'of the Qur'an' and act arrogantly from them, the doors of heaven will not be opened for them, nor will they enter Paradise until the camel passes through the eye of a sewing needle. Thus do We recompense the wicked.
42. But those who believe and do righteous deeds, We do not impose on any person a duty except to the extent of his ability - they are the occupants of Paradise; they will abide therein forever.
43. And We shall have removed all grudges in their chests10; rivers will flow under them, and they will say: "All praise be to Allāh, Who guided us to this, never could we have found Guidance were it not that Allāh had guided us. Indeed, the messengers of 'Allāh' our Lord brought the Truth". And they will be called, "This is the Paradise of which you are made heirs for what you used to do (of righteousness)."
10. All the evil thoughts and toxic feelings they might have had, will be removed from their hearts, so that they live in total peace and do not harbour any ill will for each other, especially given that they are of different ranks in Paradise.
44. And the occupants of Paradise will call out to the occupants of the Fire: "We have found whatever our Lord 'Allāh' promised us to be true; have you too found what your Lord promised to be true?" They will say: "Yes." Then an announcer will announce among them, that the Curse of Allāh is on the workers of iniquity.
46. And between them is a veil, and on the heights there will be men who will know all (of the inhabitants of Paradise and Hell) by their marks, and they will call out to the occupants of Paradise: "Peace be on you." They have not yet entered it, but they long for it.
47. When their sights are turned towards the occupants of the Fire, they (the people on the heights) will say: "Our Lord, place us not with the unjust people."
48. And the people of the heights will call out to men whom they will recognize by their marks (as sinners) saying: "Of no avail to you were your amassing (of wealth) and that you were arrogant11."
11. Allāh hates pride; we must learn to hate what Allāh hates and to love what Allāh loves. Clothe yourselves with humility toward one another, because Allāh opposes the proud and gives grace to the humble. Anyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.
49. (Allāh will say): "Are these the ones about whom you once swore that Allāh would not bestow any mercy on them?" Enter Paradise (O people of the heights); you shall have no fear, nor shall you grieve.
50. And the occupants of Hell shall call out to the occupants of Paradise, saying: "Pour on us some water or any of what Allāh blessed you with. They will say: "Allāh has prohibited them both to the deniers."
51. Those who took their faith (and deeds) as mere amusement and play, and deceived by the worldly life12. So today We shall forget them13, as they forgot the Meeting of this their Day (of Judgment) and because they used to deny Our verses.
12. One should not love the world or anything in the world more than their love for God and His messenger Muhammad. If anyone loves the world more, the true love of God and His messenger is not in them. 'The world and its desires pass away, but the man who does the Will of God and is Muslim, following God's messenger, the Prophet Muhammad, will have an ever lasting joy.'
13. I.e., abandon them in the Fire.
53. Do they wait for anything but its interpretation14? On the Day when its interpretation comes, those who neglected it before will say: "Indeed, the messengers of our Lord 'Allāh' brought the Truth. Are there for us then any intercessors so that they might intercede on our behalf? Or could we be sent back (to our worldly life) so that we might do 'deeds' other than those which we used to do?" Indeed they have lost their own selves and that which they invented15 has gone away from them.
14. The coming of Resurrection and Punishment.
15. Invoking and worshipping others besides Allâh.
54. Indeed, your Lord is Allāh, Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days, and then rose over the Throne16. He covers the night over the day seeking it out in swift pursuit, and (He created) the sun, the moon and the stars, all subservient by His Command. Unquestionably, His is the creation and the Command. Blessed is Allāh, the Lord of all beings.
16. ‘Istawa’ literally means rose and ascended in a manner befitting His Majesty, unlike any of His creation.
56. Do not make corruption in the land after its reformation, and invoke Him with (love), fear and hope. Indeed, the Mercy of Allāh is ever near to the good-doers.
57. It is He 'Allāh' Who sends forth the winds bearing good tidings before His Mercy 'the rain', until when they bring up a laden cloud, We drive it to a dead land, then We send down water on it, then bring forth with it of fruits of all kinds. Thus shall We bring forth the dead that you may take heed.
58. The good land, brings forth its plants by the Permission of its Lord (Allāh), but that which is bad comes forth but scantily. Thus do We diversify the Verses 'of the Qur’an' for a people who give thanks.
59. Indeed, We sent Noah to his people, he said: "My people, worship Allāh alone, you have no god other than Him. I fear for you the torment of a grievous Day."
63. And do you wonder that a reminder has come to you from your Lord through a man from among you, that he might warn you, and that you might guard yourselves against evil, so that you may receive 'His' Mercy?
64. But they denied him, so We delivered him and those with him in the ark, and We drowned those who rejected Our revelations; they were a blind people.
65. To (the people of) ‘Aad 'We sent' their brother Hud. He said: "My people, worship Allāh alone, you have no god 'worthy of worship' other than Him. Will you not then guard yourselves against evil?
69. And do you wonder that a reminder has come to you from your Lord through a man from among you that he might warn you (from Allah’s Chastisement)? And
Remember when He made you successors after Noah’s people and increased you in stature extensively; so remember the bounties of Allah - that you may succeed.
70. They said: "Have you come to us that we may worship Allāh alone, and give up what our fathers used to worship?" Then bring to us what you threaten us with, if you are of the truthful.
71. He said: "Indeed defilement and wrath from your Lord have fallen upon you. Do you dispute with me about names (of idols that you worship) which you and your fathers have made up? Allāh has not sent any Authority for it. Wait then (for the chastisement), I too with you will be of those who wait (for that, because of your denial of me)."
72. So, We delivered him and those with him as a Mercy from Us, and We cut off to the root of those who rejected Our revelations and were not believers.
73. And to (the people of) Thamud-'We sent' their brother Salih. He said: "My people, worship Allāh alone, you have no god 'worthy of worship' other than Him. Clear Proof indeed has come to you from your Lord. This she-camel of Allāh, a Sign for you, so leave her alone to pasture on Allah’s earth, and do not touch her with any harm, otherwise a painful torment will seize you."
74. Remember when He made you successors from after (the people of) ‘Aad and gave you habitations in the land - you make palaces on its plains, and carve out houses in the mountains - so remember the bounties of Allāh, and do not act corruptly in the land, making mischief.
75. The eminent ones who were arrogant among his people said to those who were considered weak - those among them who believed: "Do you know that Salih is sent by his Lord (Allāh)?" They said: "Indeed, we are believers in what he has been sent with."
77. So, they hamstrung the she-camel and insolently defied the Command of their Lord (Allāh), and said: "O Salih, Bring us with what you threaten us, if you are truly of God’s Messengers.”
79. So he turned away from them and said: "My people, I did certainly convey to you the Message of my Lord, and I gave you good advice, but you do not like 'sincere' advisers.
82. The answer of his people was no other than that they said: "Turn them (Lot and his family) out of your town, they are indeed people who seek to purify themselves."
85. And to (the people of) Midian (We sent) their brother Shu’aib. He said: "My people, worship Allāh alone, you have no god 'worthy of worship' other than Him. Clear Proof indeed has come to you from your Lord. Maintain proper measure and weight (in trade). Do not deprive people of their due17, and do not cause corruption in the land after its reform. This is better for you, if you are true believers.
86. Do not sit (in ambush) at every path, threatening and turning away from Allah’s Way him who believes in Him, seeking to make it crooked. Recall the time when you were few and (Allāh) multiplied you. Consider what was the end of the corrupters.
87. If there is a party of you who believes in the Message which I have been sent with, and a party who do not believe, then wait patiently until Allāh judges between us - He is the Best of the judges.
88. The eminent ones who were arrogant among his people said: "We shall certainly expel you out, O Shu’aib, and 'also' those who believe with you from our town, or you shall come back to our faith 'and way of life'." He said: "Even though we are unwilling (will you force us)?"
89. We would have invented a lie against Allāh if we go back to your faith (and way of life) when Allāh delivered us from it. And it is not for us that we return in it unless Allāh, our Lord, so wills18. Our Lord, comprehends all things in His Knowledge (and Power). In Allāh 'alone' do we put our complete trust. Our Lord, decide between us and our people with Truth; for You are the Best of the arbiters.
18. All creatures are subject to the will of Almighty Allāh, Who knows everything present, past and future.
93. So he turned away from them and said: "My people, I certainly conveyed to you the Messages of (Allāh) my Lord, and I gave you good advice. How could I then mourn for a disbelieving people?
94. We sent no Prophet to any town (and they denied him) except that We seized its people with poverty and hardship in order that they might humble themselves (and repent to Allāh).
95. Then We gave them good in the place of evil until they increased (and prospered) and (dismissively) said: "Our fathers 'also' were touched with hardship, and ease. So We took them suddenly while they did not perceive it.
96. If the people of the towns had believed19 and abstained from 'all appearance of' evil, We would certainly have opened up for them blessings from the heaven and the earth, but they denied, so We seized them (with torment) for what they used to commit 'of sins
19. Followed the messengers of God that were sent to them.
100. Is it not a guide for those who inherited the earth after its (former) residents that if We so willed, We would have smitten them for their sins? But we do seal on their hearts so that they could not hear.
101. These towns - We relate to you some of their stories, and certainly their messengers came to them with clear Proofs, but they would not believe in what they denied before. Thus does Allāh set a seal over the hearts of the disbelievers.
103. Then, We sent after them Moses with Our signs to Pharaoh and his council, but they wrongfully rejected them. So see how was the end of the corrupters?
105. It is a right upon me that I say nothing except the Truth about Allāh. Indeed, I have come to you with clear Proof from your Lord, so send with me the children of Israel."
123. Pharaoh said:"Do you believe (in 'Allāh) before I have given you permission? Certainly this is a plot which you have secretly plotted in the city, that you may drive out its people from it, but you shall know (its consequences).
126. And you do not take revenge on us except because we have believed in the Signs of our Lord when they came to us. Our Lord, pour upon us patience and cause us to die as Muslims.
127. The eminent ones of Pharaoh’s people said: "Will you leave Moses and his people to cause corruption in the land and forsake you and your gods?" (Pharaoh) said: "We will kill their sons and spare their women, and we are certainly masters over them."
128. Moses said to his people: "Ask Help from Allāh and be patient. The land belongs to Allāh; He causes to inherit it whom He wills among His servants. The 'best' outcome is for the righteous."
129. They said: "We were persecuted before you came to us and after you have come to us." (Moses) said: "It may be that your Lord will destroy your enemy, and make you rulers in the land, then He will see how you act."
131. So whenever good (fortune) come to them they would say: "This is ours." But if adversity afflict them, they would ascribe evil omens to Moses and those with him. Unquestionably, their evil omens (had been decreed by and) before Allāh, but most of them do not know.
134. When the plague fell upon them, they said: "O Moses, pray for us to your Lord (Allāh) on the account of the covenant (of prophethood) which He has made with you, if you remove the plague from us, we shall certainly believe in you, and we will certainly send with you (the) Children (of) Israel."
137. And We caused the people that were deemed weak to inherit the eastern and the western parts of the lands which We had blessed24. Thus the good Word of (Allāh) your Lord was fulfilled for the children of Israel, because they endured 'their sufferings' patiently. We utterly destroyed what Pharaoh and his people had worked and what they built.
138. And We made the children of Israel to pass over the sea. Then they came upon a people who kept to the worship of idols of theirs. They said: "Moses, make for us a god as they have gods25." He said: "You are a people acting ignorantly 'who know not26'
25. A companion of the Prophet said: We went out from Makkah with the Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) to Hunayn and we were new in Islam at that time. The pagans had a tree to which they would go and spend time (to seek blessings) and they used to hang their things on it, and it was called Dhaat Anwaat. We passed by a large green tree and we said: ‘O Messenger of God, make for us a dhaat anwaat.’ The Messenger of God (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘By the One in Whose hand is my soul, you have said the same as the people of Moses said: make for us a god as they have gods. Verily you are a people who know not. These are ways that you will certainly follow as did those who came before you, step by step.’
We learn from this to beware of polytheism (associating others with Allāh in worship) and that a person may think that something is good and will bring him closer to Allāh, when it is as far removed as it can be from the mercy of his Lord and will only bring him closer to His wrath. Seeking blessings from trees and rocks and rivers and being attached to them are all acts of idolatry.
26. The Majesty and Greatness of Allāh and what is obligatory upon you, i.e. to worship none but Allāh, the One and the Only true God of all that exists.
139. Indeed, these (people) here, destroyed is that in which they are in it (of idol worship) and worthless is what they are doing 27."
27. Seeking blessings is something determined by Allāh and no one can change it, alter it or add anything to it. The permissible ways of seeking blessings that are mentioned in the Scripture are as follows:
a) Seeking blessings through Zam Zam water, and the black stone.
b) Times: the month of Ramadan, the night of Decree, and the first ten days of Thul-Hijjah.
c) Places: Makkah, Madeenah and Jerusalem mosques.
d) Actions: Prayer, fasting alms, etc.
What is not mentioned in the legislation as being permissible to seek blessings with is forbidden. For instance: In human beings: like the saints and pious people.
Times, like the night of Ascension and the night of the birth of the Prophet .
Places: like graves and the like.
Actions: like innovations and newly introduced matters.
The blessings of Allāh, may He be exalted, can only be sought by obeying Allāh and obeying His messenger Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him). That is achieved by doing what is enjoined and refraining from what is forbidden, and hastening to repent and seek forgiveness in the event of any shortcoming in doing what is obligatory or falling into anything that has been forbidden.
141. (Recall, children of Israel) when We delivered you from Pharaoh’s people who subjected you to worst 'of' torment, killing your sons and sparing your women, and in this there was a great trial from your Lord.
142. We appointed for Moses thirty nights and completed it with ten 'more', so the appointed time of his Lord (Allāh) was perfect for forty nights. Moses said to his brother Aaron: "Take my place among my people (in my absence), and act well and do not follow the way of the corrupters."
143. When Moses came at Our appointed time, and his Lord 'Allāh' spoke to him, he said: "Lord, show me 'Yourself', so that I may look upon You." (Allāh) said: "You cannot 'bear to' see Me, but look at the mountain, if it remains firm in its place, then you shall see Me." So when his Lord 'Allāh' appeared to the mountain He made it collapse to dust, and Moses fell down unconscious; then when he recovered, he said: "Glory be to You (O Allāh), I turn to You in repentance, and I am the first of the believers."
144. (Allāh) said: "O Moses, I have chosen you above the people with My messages and with My words, so take hold of what (the Torah) I give to you, and be of the thankful (to Us)."
145. We wrote for him in the tablets of every thing admonition and a clear explanation of all things; so take hold of them with determination, and order your people to take hold by the best thereof. Soon shall I show you 'all' the home of the disobedient. (how they lie desolate).
146. I will turn away from My signs those who are arrogant on the earth without right. If they see every sign they will not believe in it. If they see the way of righteousness they will not take it, but if they see the way of error, they will take it. That is because they denied Our signs and were heedless of them.
147. As for those who deny Our revelations and the Meeting of the Hereafter, vain are their deeds. Are they recompensed for anything except what they used to do (of evil).
148. And the people of Moses took to themselves after his 'departure', from their ornaments - a (golden) calf (for worship), a 'mere' body28, having a (cow-like) sound. Did they not see that it could neither speak to them nor guide them on any way? They took it (for worship) and they were unjust.
28. This mere body even lacked the basic attributes of being a god, as it was unable to speak to them or benefit them.
149. When they regretted and saw that they had gone astray, they said: "If (Allāh) our Lord does not have Mercy on us and forgive us, we shall certainly be losers.
150. When Moses returned to his people, enraged and sorrowful, he said: "Evil is it that you have done after me. Did you hasten the Command of your Lord?" He threw down the tablets and seized his brother by the head, dragging him towards him. (Aaron) said: "Son of my mother, the people reckoned me weak and were about to kill me. So do not make the enemies rejoice over me and do not place me among the unjust people.
152. Indeed, those who took the golden calf (for a god), Wrath from their Lord (Allāh) and disgrace in this worldly life shall inflict them. Thus do We recompense the inventors (of falsehood).
153. But for those who do evil deeds, then repent after that and believe (in the Truth) - your Lord (Allāh) after that, is certainly All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
154. When Moses’s anger subsided, he took up the tablets and in their transcript there was guidance and mercy for those who revere their Lord (Allāh alone).
155. Moses chose of his people seventy men for Our appointment. When the earthquake overtook them, he said: "My Lord (Allāh), If You had willed, You would have caused them to perish before and myself 'too'. Will you let us perish for what the fools among us have done? This is only Your trial by which You send astray whom You will, and guide whom You will. You are our Guardian, so forgive us and have mercy on us, for You are the Best of forgivers.
156. And ordain for us good in this worldly life and in the Hereafter. Indeed, to You alone we turn (in repentance). (Allāh) said: "My torment, I will afflict with it whom I will, yet My mercy encompasses all things. So I will ordain it (especially) for those who guard themselves against evil, (who pray), pay the poor-rate, and those who believe in Our revelations.
157. Those who follow the Messenger - the unlettered Prophet (Muhammad), whom they find written 'and described' in the Torah29 and the Evangel30 that with them. He orders them what is right 'and just' and forbids them from what is wrong 'and unjust'. He makes the pure things lawful for them and forbids for them the impure things, removes their burdens 'and limitations which are like' chains upon them. So those who believe in him, honor and help him, and follow the Light (the Qur’an) which has been sent down with him - these are the successful.
158. Say, (O Muhammad): "O people, I am the messenger of Allāh to you all, of Him to Whom belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth, there is no god 'worthy of worship' except Him. He gives life and causes death. So believe in Allāh and His messenger, the unlettered Prophet, who believes in Allāh and His Words, and follow him so that you may be 'rightly' guided."31
31. If you declare with your mouth, that “there is no god except Allāh and that Mohammad is God's servant and messenger”, and believe that in your heart, you will be saved from the Hellfire and admitted to Paradise.
160. And We split them up into twelve tribes, as nations; and We inspired Moses when his people asked him for water: "Strike the rock with your staff," so there gushed forth from it twelve springs. Each people knew its drinking place. We made the clouds to give shade over them, and we sent to them manna and quails: Eat of the good things We have given you - they did not do Us any harm, but they did injustice to their own selves.
161. When it was said to them: "Dwell in this town (Jerusalem), and eat from it wherever you wish, and say: "Absolve us," and enter the gate bowing with humility, We shall forgive you your wrongs. We shall increase the good-doers (in goodness and reward)."
162. But those who were unjust among them changed 'the words' for a saying other than that which had been spoken to them; so We sent upon them a plague from the sky for their wrong doing.
163. Ask them about the town (Eila) which stood by the sea; when they violated the Sabbath, when their fish came to them openly on the day of their Sabbath, appearing on the surface of the water, but on the day on which they did not keep the Sabbath, they did not come to them. Thus did We try them for their rebelliousness.
164. When a community of them said: "Why do you preach to a people32 whom Allāh is about to destroy or chastise with a severe Chastisement? "They said: "To be free from blame before 'Allāh' your Lord, and that they may guard themselves against evil.
32. While we can’t force others to turn from sinful behaviors, we can compassionately confront them. We can “speak the truth in love” so that we both become followers of Prophet Muhammad's perfect example ”.
165. When they forgot what they had been reminded of, We delivered those who forbade evil, and seized those who did iniquity with a miserable torment, for they used to rebel (against Us).
167. When your Lord (Allāh) declared that He would surely send against them (the unbelieving Jews) those who would afflict them with the worst torment until the Day of Resurrection. Your Lord is certainly Quick in punishment, and surely He is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
168. And We split them up on the earth into communities (the Jews, some) of them being righteous and (others) less than that. We tried them with good (times) and bad that they might turn (to Allāh in repentance).
169. Then there succeeded after them a succession who inherited the Scripture, taking the offer of this lowly life33 saying, "It will be forgiven to us." And if an offer like it comes to them, they will again take it. Was not a covenant taken from them in the Scripture that they would not speak anything about Allāh except the Truth, and they have studied what is in it. The home of the Hereafter is better for those who guard against evil. Do you not then understand?
171. When We raised the mountain above them (the children of Israel) as if it were a dark cloud and they were certain that it would fall upon them, (and Allāh said): "Take what We have given you (of the Torah) with determination and remember what is in it that you may guard against evil.
172. your Lord (Allāh) brought forth from the loins of the children of Adam their offsprings, and made them bear witness against themselves: 'Am I not your Lord?' They said: "Yes, We bear witness 'to it'." Lest you say on the Day of Resurrection: "We were unaware of this."
173. Or lest you say: "Only our fathers associated (others with Allāh) from before, and we were (their) offspring after them. Will You destroy us for what the followers of falsehood have done?"
175. Recite to them (O Muhammad) the news of him35 to whom We gave (knowledge of) Our revelations, but he detached himself from it, so Satan pursued him and he became one of the deviants.
35. A man from the Children of Israel called Balaam, the son of Beor.
176.If We had willed, We would have elevated him thereby; but he clung to the earth and followed his (evil) desires. So his example is like that of a dog: if you chase it away, it pants, and if you leave it alone, it 'still' pants. That is the example of the people who deny Our revelations. So relate the stories so that they may reflect.
179. We have destined many of the jinn and humans for Gehinnom 'Hell'. They have hearts with which they do not understand, eyes with which they do not see, and ears with which they do not hear36. They are as cattle. Rather, they are more astray. These are the heedless ones.
36. As they fail to use their faculties of discernment and understanding which Allāh endowed them with to get at the Truth and follow the guidance of Allāh.
180. Allāh has the Most Beautiful Names, so call upon Him by them37. Leave alone those who violate the sanctity of His names38. They will be recompensed for what they used to do (of evil).
37. Believers are advised to find solace in Allāh and His Most Beautiful Names to suppress all that bears down on their morale and mental peace.
38. I.e., use them improperly or deny them.
As we stated the proper names of God are Allāh - God -, Ar-Rahmaan - the Most Compassionate -, Ar-Raheem - the Most Mercfil - Al-Hay - the Ever-Living-, Al Quyyuum - the All-Sustaining -, among many others.
Moses and Jesus used to call God by Elohim - God - , Eli - God - , which is the same name that Muslims call God - Allāh, Allaahumma. However the name Father Is not proper name of God.
Peope should stop saying this name or similar to it or any name used improperly for God, for fear of contravening the commandment “You shall not misuse the name of Allāh your God, for Allāh will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name" (Exodus 20:7). The proper Name all must use for God is Allāh.This Name of Majesty is mentioned in the Qur’an as (Elohim) 5 times and as (Allāh) 2557 times.
"He is Allāh —there is no god ˹worthy of worship˺ except Him: Knower of the seen and unseen. He is the Most Compassionate, the Most Merciful.
He is Allāh —there is no god except Him: the King, the Most Holy, the Peace, the Faithful, the Watcher ˹of all˺, the Almighty, the Restorer, the Majestic. Glorified is Allāh far above what they associate with Him ˹in worship˺. He is Allāh: the Creator, the Inventor, the Shaper. He ˹alone˺ has the Most Beautiful Names. Whatever is in the heavens and the earth ˹constantly˺ glorifies Him. And He is the Almighty, All-Wise."
(Qur’an, chapter 59, verses 22-24).
183. And I will give them time. Indeed, My plan is firm40.
40. Muhammad, the Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Allāh gives the wrongful respite, but when He seizes them, He will not let them off”. Then he ﷺ recited this verse of the Qur’an: “Such is the seizing of your Lord when He seizes the towns while they are doing wrong. His seizing is painful, severe.” (Qur’an chapter 11: 102).
185. Have they not looked the realm of the heavens and the earth and all that Allāh has created of things, and that may be that their term has already drawn near? So what statement would they believe in after this (Divine Message).
187. They (the pagans) ask you about the Hour 'of Doom', when will be its taking place? Say, (Muhammad): "The knowledge of it is only with 'Allāh' my Lord. None but Him shall manifest it at its time. Heavy it is in the heavens and on earth. It will not come on you except all of a sudden." They ask you as if you have good knowledge about it. Say: "Its knowledge is only with Allāh, but most people do not know."
188. Say, (Muhammad): "I do not control any benefit or harm for my own self except what Allāh wills. Had I known the unseen, I would have had much good, and no harm would have touched me. I am but a warner and a giver of good news 42 to a people who believe (in this Divine Message).
42. Prophet Muhammad is not a miracle weaver nor is he privy to much of the Unseen, unless Allāh allows him it. He is no more than a deliverer of the Message of God. So people need to listen, heed and believe; but only the mindful will benefit from him.
189. It is He (Allāh) Who created you from a single being (Adam), and made his mate (Eve) of like nature, so that he may find comfort in her. But when he (man, a pagan) engaged in carnal relations with his wife, she bore a light burden (unnoticed pregnancy) which she had to carry. When 'the baby' grew in her womb, they (husband and wife) both prayed to Allāh, their Lord, (saying): "If You give us a good child, we shall certainly be of the thankful."
190. But when He gave them both an upright (child), they set up for Him partners in what He granted them43. So Exalted be Allāh above all what they associate to Him as partners.
43. I.e., they begun to love the child as much as they love Allāh. Allāh is too exalted to be loved equally to anything else.
194. Those whom you (pagans) call upon besides Allāh are slaves 'i.e. creations' like you. So call upon them, and let them answer your prayers, if you are truthful.
195. Do they (the idols) have feet with which they walk, or hands to hold things, or eyes to see, or ears to hear? Say: "Call on your associate-gods for help, then plot against me and give me no respite."
203. When you (Muhammad) do not bring them a Sign (which they demanded), they say: "Why do you not seek it?" Say: "I only follow what is revealed to me from my Lord." This is an insights from your Lord and a guidance and a mercy for a people who believe.
205. Remember your Lord (Allāh) within yourself humbly and fearfully without raising your voice, in the morning and evening, and be not of the heedless ones.
206. Indeed, those (angels) who are with your Lord do not act arrogantly from worshipping Him. They glorify Him and to Him they prostrate themselves 'in obedience'.
