Al-Muzzammil

1 : 73

يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلۡمُزَّمِّلُ

O you the enwrapped one^[1],

[1] Allah is addressing the Messenger (ﷺ), who was wrapped in his garments.

2 : 73

قُمِ ٱلَّيۡلَ إِلَّا قَلِيلٗا

Stand up in prayer at night except a little,

3 : 73

نِّصۡفَهُۥٓ أَوِ ٱنقُصۡ مِنۡهُ قَلِيلًا

half of it, or a little less,

4 : 73

أَوۡ زِدۡ عَلَيۡهِ وَرَتِّلِ ٱلۡقُرۡءَانَ تَرۡتِيلًا

or a little more, and recite the Qur’an at a measured pace.

5 : 73

إِنَّا سَنُلۡقِي عَلَيۡكَ قَوۡلٗا ثَقِيلًا

We will send down upon you a heavy Word^[2].

[2] i.e., the revelation, which the Prophet (ﷺ) would feel its great weight when descending upon him. Also, it is heavy for its ordinances, rulings, punishments, ethics, etc.

6 : 73

إِنَّ نَاشِئَةَ ٱلَّيۡلِ هِيَ أَشَدُّ وَطۡـٔٗا وَأَقۡوَمُ قِيلًا

Indeed, worship at night is more effective^[3] and more conducive to proper recitation^[4].

[3] Or "getting up at night is more difficult...," meaning that it can only be done by sincere believers.
[4] i.e., for reciting, hearing, and understanding of the Qur’an.

7 : 73

إِنَّ لَكَ فِي ٱلنَّهَارِ سَبۡحٗا طَوِيلٗا

In the daytime, you have plenty of time for your worldly matters.

8 : 73

وَٱذۡكُرِ ٱسۡمَ رَبِّكَ وَتَبَتَّلۡ إِلَيۡهِ تَبۡتِيلٗا

And remember the Name of your Lord, and devote yourself completely to Him.

9 : 73

رَّبُّ ٱلۡمَشۡرِقِ وَٱلۡمَغۡرِبِ لَآ إِلَٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ فَٱتَّخِذۡهُ وَكِيلٗا

[He is] Lord of the east and the west; none has the right to be worshiped except Him, so take Him as the Disposer of your affairs^[5].

[5] i.e., trust in Allah and rely upon Him in all your matters.

10 : 73

وَٱصۡبِرۡ عَلَىٰ مَا يَقُولُونَ وَٱهۡجُرۡهُمۡ هَجۡرٗا جَمِيلٗا

Bear patiently what they say, and avoid them in a gracious manner.

11 : 73

وَذَرۡنِي وَٱلۡمُكَذِّبِينَ أُوْلِي ٱلنَّعۡمَةِ وَمَهِّلۡهُمۡ قَلِيلًا

Leave to Me the deniers who are having a life of luxury, and bear with them for a little while.

12 : 73

إِنَّ لَدَيۡنَآ أَنكَالٗا وَجَحِيمٗا

Indeed, We have heavy shackles and a Blazing Fire,

13 : 73

وَطَعَامٗا ذَا غُصَّةٖ وَعَذَابًا أَلِيمٗا

and food that chokes, and a painful punishment,

14 : 73

يَوۡمَ تَرۡجُفُ ٱلۡأَرۡضُ وَٱلۡجِبَالُ وَكَانَتِ ٱلۡجِبَالُ كَثِيبٗا مَّهِيلًا

on the Day when the earth and the mountains will convulse, and the mountains will be like dunes of loose sand.

15 : 73

إِنَّآ أَرۡسَلۡنَآ إِلَيۡكُمۡ رَسُولٗا شَٰهِدًا عَلَيۡكُمۡ كَمَآ أَرۡسَلۡنَآ إِلَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنَ رَسُولٗا

Indeed, We have sent to you a Messenger to be a witness over you, just as We sent to Pharaoh a messenger.

16 : 73

فَعَصَىٰ فِرۡعَوۡنُ ٱلرَّسُولَ فَأَخَذۡنَٰهُ أَخۡذٗا وَبِيلٗا

But Pharaoh disobeyed the messenger, so We seized him with a severe punishment.

17 : 73

فَكَيۡفَ تَتَّقُونَ إِن كَفَرۡتُمۡ يَوۡمٗا يَجۡعَلُ ٱلۡوِلۡدَٰنَ شِيبًا

If you disbelieve, then how will you protect yourselves against a Day that will turn children’s hair gray?

18 : 73

ٱلسَّمَآءُ مُنفَطِرُۢ بِهِۦۚ كَانَ وَعۡدُهُۥ مَفۡعُولًا

It will cause the sky to break asunder^[6]. His promise will certainly be fulfilled.

[6] Out of the terror of that Day.

19 : 73

إِنَّ هَٰذِهِۦ تَذۡكِرَةٞۖ فَمَن شَآءَ ٱتَّخَذَ إِلَىٰ رَبِّهِۦ سَبِيلًا

Indeed, this is a reminder; so whoever wills may take a way to his Lord.
