At-Tawbah

1. This is a declaration of abrogation from Allāh and His messenger (Muhammad) of the peace treaty that existed between you (believers) and the pagans (who had violated it).
2. So travel peacefully (you pagans) in the land for four months (as a respite to you that you may repent), and know that you cannot cause failure to Allāh, and that Allāh will bring disgrace to the deniers (of Truth, oppossers of Peace).
3. Announcement from Allāh and His messenger to the people on the day of the greater Pilgrimage (the day of Sacrifice) that Allāh is disassociated from the pagans and (so is) His messenger. So if you (pagans) repent, it is better for you, but if you turn away, then know that you cannot cause failure to Allāh, and announce to the disbelievers of a painful torment .
4. Excepted are those of the pagans with whom you 'Muslims' made a treaty, then they have not failed you in anything, nor have they supported any one against you, so fulfill their treaty with them until 'the end of' their term. Indeed, Allāh loves the righteous.
5. When the sacred months are over1, slay the 'warring' pagans² wherever you find them. Capture, besiege, and ambush them. But if they repent, establish the prayer, and pay the poor-rate, then set them free. Indeed Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
1. The periods of truce i.e., Muḥarram, Rajab, Dhul-Qaʿdah, and Dhul-Ḥijjah in the Islamic calendar.
2. This applies especially to combatant pagans who broke the peace treaty and posed a threat to Muslims.
6. If any of the pagans seek asylum from you, grant him it, so that he may hear the Words of God3, then escort him to his place of safety. This is because they are a people who do not know 'the Truth'.
3. I.e., the Qur’an.
7. How can there be a treaty for the pagans with Allāh and with His messenger except those 'of them' with whom you made a treaty at the Sacred Mosque? As long as they are upright to you, be upright to them. Indeed, Allāh loves the righteous.
8. How 'can there be a treaty' while, if they prevail against you, they will not respect any ties of relationship, or covenant of protection with you. They seek to please you with their mouths but their hearts are averse to it, and most of them are sinful.
9. They have sold the Verses of Allāh for a trifling gain, so they turned 'people' away from His path. Evil is it that they do.
10. They do not observe toward a believer any ties of relationship or covenant of protection. It is they who are the transgressors.
11. But if they repent, keep up the prayer, and pay the poor-rate, they are your brothers in Faith. We detail the Verses for a people who know 'that it is the Truth'.
12. But if they violate their established peace treaty with you and revile your religion, then fight the leaders of faithlessness, evil, malice - indeed, there are no oaths sacred to them - 'fight them' so that they may cease 'from aggression and hostility'.
13. Will you not fight against a people who have broken their peace treaty with you, decided to expel the Messenger (of Allāh, from his home town), and they had begun (the attack upon) you the first time. Do you fear them? But Allāh is most deserving that you should fear Him, if you are believers.
14. Fight them, Allāh will make them suffer at your hands, disgrace them, give you victory over them, and delight the hearts of a believing people4,
4. Those who were subjected to oppression and were persecuted.
15. And appease their anger. Allāh forgives whomever He wills. For Allāh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
16. Do you think 'believers' that you will be left as you are while Allāh has not yet made evident those of you who have strove hard for His Cause and do not take other than Allāh, His messenger and the believers as intimates. Allāh is All-Aware of what you do.
17. The pagans have no right to maintain the mosques of Allāh, while they bear witness against themselves of disbelief5. These it is whose deeds are in vain, and in the Hellfire they will abide forever.
5. They did disbelief by both their words and deeds. They installed idols in and around the Sanctified Mosque, even inside the Kaʿbah itself, prayed to them and performed devotional acts of worship in their names, thus associated them with Almighty Allāh.
18. The Mosques of Allāh are only to be maintained by those who believe in Allāh, the Last Day, keep up the prayer, pay the poor-rate, and fear none but Allāh. As for these, they may hope to be among the rightly guided.
19. Do you (pagans) consider giving water to the pilgrims, and maintaining the Sacred Mosque as equal to (the deeds of) one who believes in Allāh, the Last day, and strives hard in Allah's Cause? They are not equal in the Sight of Allāh. For Allāh does not guide the persistently wrongdoing people.
20. Those who believed and emigrated, and strove hard in Allah’s Path with their wealth and their lives, are much higher in rank in the sight of Allāh. These are the successful.
21. Their Lord 'Allāh' gives them good tidings of Mercy from Himself and (His) good pleasure and Gardens wherein lasting blessings will be theirs;
22. Abiding therein forever. Surely Allāh has a great reward with Him.
23. O believers, do not take your fathers and your brothers as trusted allies if they prefer faithlessness over faith. Whoever among you takes them as a trusted ally, then these are the unjust.
24. Say 'Muhammad': "If your fathers, your sons, your brothers, your wives, your relatives, the wealth which you have acquired, your trade which you fear a decline, and dwellings in which you delight, are more beloved to you than Allāh, His messenger, and fighting for His cause, then wait till Allāh brings about His Command - for Allāh does not guide the rebellious people.
25. Indeed, Allāh has given you victory in many battlefields, and on the day of Hunain when you rejoiced at your great number, but it benefited you nothing and the earth became strait to you despite its spaciousness, then you turned back retreating6.
6. Not all the army of believers retreated, especially the sincerest early migrant and helper companions, not to mention the noblest Prophet ﷺ himself.
26. Then Allāh sent down His tranquility upon His messenger and upon the believers, and sent down hosts (angelic forces) which you did not see, and chastised those who denied - that is the recompense of the deniers (of the Truth).
27. Then after this, Allāh forgives whomever He wills, for Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
28. O belivers, the idolaters are (spiritually) impure, so let them not come near the Sacred Mosque after this year. If you fear poverty, then Allāh will enrich you out of His bounty if He wills. Indeed, Allāh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
29. Fight those who do not believe in (the Oneness of) Allāh, nor in the Last Day (in all its aspects), nor do they prohibit what Allāh and His messenger 'Muhammad' have prohibited7, nor follow the religion of Truth8, of those who have been given the (past) Scripture (the Jews and the Christians) - until they (agree to) pay the Jizyah9 with a willing hand, while they are humbled.
7. Such as usury, eating pork, drinking alcohol, sexual immorality, etc.
8. I.e., Islam, but follow superstitions and erroneous beliefs, such as the doctrine of the trinity, adoring the cross, or that Jesus Christ is the supposed manifestation, human personification, or incarnation of the One true God - Allāh.
9. Protection tax, for those who are able.
30. (Some of the) Jews said: "Ezra is the son of God;" and Christians say: "Christ is the son of God.10" These are the saying of their mouths. They imitate the saying of the pagans before them11. May Allāh fight them - how deluded they are.
10. The Prophet Muhammad said: "Those Jews who worshipped Ezra will be called upon and it will be said to them, 'Who do you used to worship?' They will say, 'We used to worship Ezra, the son of God.' It will be said to them, 'You are liars, for Allāh (God) has never taken anyone as a son, whereupon they will be gathered unto Hell (Fire). Afterwards the Christians will be called upon and it will be said to them, 'Who do you used to worship?' They will say, 'We used to worship Jesus, the son of God.' It will be said to them, 'You are liars, for Allāh has never taken anyone as a son,' whereupon they will be gathered unto Hell (Fire)". The core concept of Islam is monotheism, affirming one God and (proclaiming): worship and serve Allāh only and shun false gods. All the prophets such as Noah, Abraham, Moses, Jesus, Muhammad all called to Islamic Monotheism. Buddha, Krishna or many other wrongly considered divine figures called to worship Allāh alone. Those who are devotees of other gods and who worship them with faith actually worship Satan. There is no true god but Allāh only. Therefore, those who worship the demigods will be in hell among the demigods; those who worship the ancestors go to the disbelieving ancestors; those who worship ghosts and spirits will be among such beings; and those who worship Allāh alone will live eternally in Paradise.
11. Saying that Allāh has taken to Himself a son, as pagans before them said that angels are Allah’s daughters.
31. They have taken their rabbis and their monks for lords besides Allāh, and (also) the Messiah, the son of Mary, and they were commanded that they should worship only one God (Allāh). There is no god  (worthy of worship) except Him. Glorified and Exalted is He above what they associate (with Him as partners).
32. They want to extinguish the Light of Allāh with their mouths, but Allāh refuses except to perfect His light, though the deniers are averse (to it).
33.It is He 'Allāh' Who sent His messenger 'Muhammad' with guidance and the religion of Truth, that He may cause it to prevail over all 'false' religions, even though the pagans are averse 'to it'.
34. O believers, many of the 'Jewish' rabbis, 'the Christian priests' and monks, consume the wealth of the people unlawfully, and turn 'them' away from God’s Way. Those who hoard up gold and silver and do not spend 'anything out of it' in God’s cause, announce to them a painful torment,
35. On the Day when it will be heated in the Fire of Gehinnom 'Hell', then their foreheads, their sides and their backs shall be branded with it. This is what you hoarded up for yourselves, so taste what you hoarded.
36. The number of months with Allāh is twelve (lunar) months in Allah’s Ordinance since the Day when He created the heavens and the earth, of these four being sacred12. This is the right reckoning, so do not do injustice to yourselves nor to each other (by waging wars) during these months13. Fight the idolaters all together as they fight you all together. Know that Allāh is with the righteous.
12. The 1st, 7th, 11th, and 12th months of Islamic calendar.
13. In particular, and during all the months of the year in general.
37. Indeed, the postponing 'of a sacred month to observe it during non-sacred months' is an increase in ingratitude and denial, wherewith those who deny (the Truth) are led astray, violating it one year and keeping it sacred another, that they may make up the number (of months) that Allāh has made sacred, and thus violate what Allāh has made sacred. The evil of their doings is made fair seeming to them. Allāh does not guide the denying people.
38. O believers, what (excuse) have you that when it is said to you: "Go forth (for war) in Allah’s Cause, you cling heavily to the earth. Are you content with this worldly life instead of the Hereafter? But the enjoyment of this worldly life compared with the Hereafter is but a little.
39. If you do not go forth (for war in the Cause of Allāh), He will chastise you with a painful chastisement and bring in your place a people other than you, and you cannot harm Him at all. For Allāh has full Power over all things.
40. If you do not aid him 'Muhammad',
Then Allāh certainly aided him when those who denied (the Truth)  expelled him, he being the second of the two14, when they were both in the cave, when he said to his companion: "Do not worry, Allāh is certainly with us." So Allāh sent down His tranquility upon him and strengthened him with hosts (angelic forces) which you did not see, and made lowest the word of those who denied15; and the Word of Allāh16, that is the Highest; for Allāh is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
14. The second was his companion, Abu Bakr.
15. I.e., their claims and slogans of disbelief.
16. I.e., "Laa ilaaha illal laah" (there is no true deity except Allāh).
41. Go forth (for war in the Cause of God) whether light or heavy17, and strive hard in God's Way18 with your wealth and your lives; this is better for you, if you only knew.
17. i.e., young or old, lightly or heavily armed, riding or walking, in ease or in hardship - in all circumstances and conditions.
18. The moral Way to Peace.
42. Had it been a near (or easy) gain (of war booty in sight) and a short journey, they (the hypocrites) would have followed you, but the distance (of the expedition of Tabuk) was too long for them. They swear by Allāh: "If we had been able, we would certainly have gone forth with you." They cause their own selves to perish. Allāh knows that they are liars.
43. 'May' Allāh pardon you 'Muhammad', why did you give them permission 'to stay at home' until those who spoke the Truth had become manifest to you and you had known the liars?
44. They do not ask permission of you, those who believe in Allāh and the Last Day 'to stay away' from fighting with their wealth and their lives. Allāh knows best the righteous.
45. Only those who do not believe in Allāh and the Last Day ask you permission19, because their hearts are full of doubt, so in their doubt do they waver.
19. To be exempted from fighting for the Cause of Allāh.
46. If they had intended to go forth 'for war for God’s Cause', they would have prepared for it some preparation. But Allāh disliked their going forth into battle, so He made them lag behind, and it was said 'to them': "Sit you among those who sit 'at home'."
47. Had they gone forth with you into battle, they would not have added to you anything except quandary, and they would have hurried about among you seeking (to sow) dissension among you, and among you there are avid listeners to them. For Allāh knows the unjust.
48.They sought 'to sow' dissension before, and turned matters related to you over 'to cause you failure' until the truth 'victory' came, and Allah’s Commandment prevailed, although they were averse 'to it'.
49. Among them there is he who says: "Grant me permission 'to remain at home' and do not put me into temptation." They have already fallen into the temptation20. Hell certainly encompasses the deniers.
20. By avoiding their obligations, they fell into trial.
50. If good befalls you, it grieves them, but if hardship afflicts you, they say: "We had taken care of our affair before.21" And they turn back while they are rejoicing.
21. The hypocrites claim to have protected themselves by remaining behind from the Jihâd (i.e., going to war to establish justice, peace, and order).
51. Say 'Muhammad': "Nothing will happen to us except what Allāh has decreed for us; He is Our Guardian." On Allāh alone let the believers rely.
52. Say 'Muhammad': "Do you await for us 'anything' except one of two most excellent things 'martyrdom or victory'? And we await for you that Allāh will afflict you with torment from Himself or by our hands. So wait; we too are waiting with you."
53. Say: "Spend willingly or unwillingly, it will not be accepted from you; you are an evil doing people."
54. Nothing prevents their spending being accepted from them, except that they deny Allāh and His messenger, and they do not come to prayer but lazily, and they do not spend but reluctantly.
55. Let not then their wealth and their children impress you. Allāh only intends to chastise them through them in this worldly life and (that) their souls may depart while they are deniers.
56. They swear by Allāh that they are certainly 'part' of you, and they are not 'part' of you, but they are a people 'hypocrites' who are afraid 'to appear in their true nature'.
57. If they could find a refuge or some cave or a place to enter into, they would certainly have turned thereto, galloping.
58. Among them there are those who snide at you regarding the 'distribution of' the alms; if they are given from it they are pleased, and if they are not given from it, at once they are full of rage.
59. If they were content with what Allāh and His messenger gave them and had said: "Allāh is Enough for us. Allāh will soon give us (more) out of His bounty and His messenger too. To Allāh alone do we turn with hope."
60. (The obligatory) alms are but for the poor, the destitutes, for those employed to collect it, for those whose hearts are attracted (towards Islam), for the freeing of human beings from bondage, for those who are over burdened with debts, (those fighting) in Allah’s Cause, and for the (stranded) travelers (strangers and alien residents). An obligation ordained by Allāh, for Allāh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
61. Among those (hypocrites) are some who hurt the Prophet and say: "He listens to everything and believes what he hears." Say: "He only listens what is good for you; he believes in Allāh, trusts the believers, and is a mercy for those of you who believe." Those who hurt the messenger of Allāh, they will have a painful torment.
62. They swear to you by Allāh so they may please you, but Allāh as well as His messenger 'Muhammad' have a greater right that they should be pleased, if they are indeed believers 'as they claim'.
63. Do they not know that whoever opposes Allāh and His messenger 'and dies as such', for him is the Fire of Gehinnom 'Hell' to abide therein forever? That is the ultimate disgrace.
64. The hypocrites fear lest a Chapter 'of the Qur’an' should be revealed about them informing them plainly of what is in their hearts. Say: "Go on mocking, Allāh will bring forth what you fear."
65. If you should question them, they would certainly say: "We were only talking idly and joking." Say: "Was it at Allāh, His verses and His messenger that you were mocking?"
66. Make no excuses. You have certainly disbelieved after your belief. If We pardon a party of you, We shall chastise (another) party, because they are wicked.
67. The hypocrites, men and women, are of one another; they command what is evil, forbid what is good, and withhold their hands 'from spending for the Cause of Allāh'. They have forgotten Allāh22, so He has forgotten them23. The hypocrites - it is they who are the rebellious 'against God'.
22. I.e., neglected the devotion that is due to Him from them.
 23. i.e., abandoned them in the Hellfire.
68. Allāh has promised the hypocrites, men and women, and the deniers, the Fire of Gehinnom to abide therein forever; it is enough for them. Allāh has cursed them and they shall have a lasting torment.
69. 'You disbelievers are' like those before you; they were stronger than you in power and more abundant in wealth and children. They enjoyed their portion (of worldly pleasures); and you have enjoyed your portion as those before you enjoyed theirs; and you entered into vain discourses like the vain discourses they entered into before you. These are the ones whose deeds are null in this world and in the Hereafter. It is they who are the real losers.
70. Has not the news of those before them come to them; of the people of Noah, ‘Aad, Thamud, the people of Abraham, the dwellers of Midian, and the overthrown cities 'of Sodom and Gomorrah'. Their messengers came to them with clear Proofs; so it was not Allāh that did them injustice, but to themselves they used to be unjust.
71. The believers, both men and women, are allies and helpers of each other; they command good, forbid evil, keep up the prayer, pay the poor-rate, and obey Allāh and His messenger 'Muhammad'. These, Allāh will have Mercy on them. Indeed, Allāh is All-Mighty, All-Wise.
72. Allāh has promised the believers, both men and women, Gardens under which rivers flow, to abide therein forever, and goodly dwellings in Gardens of Eden. Allah’s Pleasure (with them) is greater still (than all of this). That is the great achievement.
73. O prophet, strive hard against the deniers and hypocrites and be firm against them. Their ultimate abode is Gehinnom 'Hell'. What a terrible destination.
74. They 'the hypocrites' swear by Allāh that they said nothing (blasphemous), while they had uttered the word of blasphemy, and disbelieved after their Islam. They had resolved that which they were unable to carry out24. They only bore grudges after Allāh and His messenger enriched them of His bounty. So if they repent, it is better for them, but if they turn back, Allāh will chastise them with a painful chastisement in this world and in the Hereafter, and they will not have in the land any protector nor helper.
24. To murder the Prophet Muhammad.
75. There are some among them who promised Allāh 'saying': "If He gives us out of His bounty, we shall certainly give charity and we shall be of the righteous."
76. But when He gave them out of His bounty, they became niggardly of it and they turned away in aversion.
77. So as a consequence He placed hypocrisy in their hearts until the Day when they meet Him, because of their breaking their promise to Allāh, and because of their persistent lying.
78. Do they not know that Allāh knows their secrets and their private counsels, and that Allāh is the Great Knower of the unseen.
79. Those (hypocrites) who defame such of the believers who give charity voluntarily, and those who find nothing to give except their effort, so they ridicule them; Allāh will ridicule them, and they will have a painful torment.
80. 'Whether you' ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them; even if you ask forgiveness for them seventy times, Allāh will never forgive them. This is because they have denied Allāh and His messenger. For Allāh does not guide the rebellious people.
81. Those 'Hypocrites' who did not take part in the battle 'of Tabuk' were glad of their staying home against the order of the messenger of God. They did not want to fight for the Cause of God with their wealth and their lives, and said 'to one another': "Do not go forth in the heat." Say: "The Fire of Gehinnom is much more severe in heat." If they only could understand.
82. So let them laugh a little, and 'soon, they will' weep more as a recompense for what they have done 'of sins'.
83. When Allāh brings you back to a party of them and then they ask your permission to go forth (to war with you), say: "You shall never go forth with me and you shall never fight an enemy with me. You chose to remain behind the first time, so 'now' stay with those who remained behind."
84. Never offer 'the funeral' prayer for any one of them 'the hypocrites' who dies nor stand by his grave. They denied Allāh and His messenger 'Muhammad' and died while they were sinful.
85. Let not their wealth and their children impress you. Allāh only intends to chastise them with these things in this world and 'that' their souls may depart while they are deniers 'of Truth, enemies to Peace'.
86. Whenever a Chapter 'of the Qur’an' is revealed, saying: "Believe in Allāh and fight along with His messenger," such of them who are well able 'to go to war' ask permission of you and say: "Let us remain with those who stay behind 'at home'."
87. They are content to be with those who remained behind (at home), and a seal is set on their hearts - so they do not understand.
88. But the messenger 'Muhammad' and those who believe with him strive with their wealth and their lives. These are the ones who will have the good things, and these are the ones who will be the successful.
89. Allāh has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow, to abide therein forever - that is the great achievement.
90. There came (to the Messenger) some desert tribesmen (around Medinah) who had some excuses to offer (with the request) that they be granted exemption (from fighting), and those (the hypocrite nomads) who were untrue to Allāh and His messenger remained behind (at home with no excuse). A painful torment will afflict those of them who denied (the Truth).
91. No blame (to stay behind) shall be on the weak, nor the sick, nor those who have no means, as long as they are sincere to Allāh and His messenger. There is no way (of blame) against the good-doers. (Know that) Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
92. Nor (shall blame be on) those who when they came to you that you might provide them with mounts, and you said: "I can find nothing for you to ride upon." They went back while their eyes overflowed with tears because of grief for not finding anything to spend ( for the Cause of God).
93. The cause (for blame) is only against those who ask permission from you though they are rich. They have chosen to be with those who remained behind (at home). Allāh has set a seal upon their hearts, so they do not know (what they are missing).
94. They (the hypocrites) will apologize to you when you go back to them. Say: "Make no excuses. We shall never believe you. Allāh has already informed us of your affairs. Allāh will observe your deeds, and (so will) His messenger; then you will be returned to 'Allāh' the Knower of the unseen and the seen, and He will inform you of what you used to do."
95. They will swear to you by Allāh when you return to them, so that you may leave them alone; so turn away from them - they are filthy, and their home is Gehinnom - a just recompense for what they have committed (of sins).
96. They swear to you that you may be pleased with them; but if you are pleased with them, Allāh is not pleased with the sinful people.
97. (Some) desert tribesmen "around you O Prophet" are stronger in denial and hypocrisy, and have more reason to be ignorant of the Laws that Allāh has revealed to His messenger25. For Allāh is All-knowing, All-Wise.
25. Being away from sources of knowledge by not mixing with the knowledgeable Companions of the Messenger ﷺ.
98. Among those desert tribesmen are those who consider what they spend ",in God's way" to be a fine (or loss), and await (the befalling of some) calamities upon you (O believers). On them (will be) the evil calamity. For Allāh is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
99. Yet among the desert tribesmen are those who believe in Allāh and the Last Day, and regard what they spend to be (a means of) the nearness to Allāh and the messenger’s prayers. It will certainly be means of nearness for them; Allāh will admit them into His mercy. Indeed, Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
100. As for the earliest forerunners (in the faith) of the emigrants26 and the helpers27, and those who nobly followed them, Allāh is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. He has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow, to abide therein forever. This is the supreme  triumph.
26. from Makkah to Madinah, for the sake of their religion.
27. From Madinah, who helped and gave aid to the Prophet and those who emigrated.
101. Among those who are around you (O Prophet) of the dwellers of the desert there are hypocrites, and among the people of Medina (also); there are some who persist in (their) hypocrisy; you do not know them, but We know them. We shall chastise them twice (in this world and in their graves), then they will be turned back to a grievous torment (of Hell in the Hereafter).
102. There are others who admitted their sins, they have mixed a good deed with bad one; it may be that Allāh will forgive them. Indeed Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
103. Collect alms (Zakat) from their wealth to purify them (of their sins) and elevate them28 and pray for them - your prayer is a source of relief for them - for Allāh is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
28. I.e., to increase their wealth, good manners, pious deeds, and reward them both in this world and in the Hereafter.
104. Do they not know that Allāh accepts the repentance from His servants and takes their charities29, and that Allāh is the Accepter of Repentance, the Most Merciful.
29. That they give in good causes, seeking His face.
105. Say: ‘Do your deeds,’ Allāh will see your deeds, and 'so will' His messenger and the believers; then you will be returned to 'Allāh' the Knower of the unseen and the seen, and He will inform you of what you used to do.
106. And30 (there are yet) others (whose cases are) deferred, who await God's Command; He will either chastise them or forgive them - for Allāh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
30. Besides those who admitted their sins.
107. As for those 'hypocrites' who built a mosque to cause harm and for denial and to cause division among the believers and a base for those who made war against Allāh and His messenger before. They will certainly swear:"We did not intend anything but good. Allāh bears witness that they are liars.
108. Never stand therein. The mosque founded on piety from the very first day is more deserving that you should stand therein 'to pray'. In it are men who love to purify themselves. Allāh loves those who purify themselves and are clean31.
31. Muhammad, the Messenger of God ﷺ said, “Cleanliness is half of faith”.
Doing ablution and showering regularly. Keeping nails a suitable length and cleaning under them. Thoroughly brushing your teeth. Washing your hands before and after mealtimes and after going to the bathroom are all exhorted in Islam. We must also give much care to the cleanness of our hearts and purifying ourselves from the sins. Cleanliness is important, for it builds up a healthy environment that facilitates physical and mental well-being and growth. Therefore, its individual, as well as collective importance cannot be denied. Cleaning the environment is the key to the existence and survival of life on planet earth. Maintaining a clean environment reduces pollution, preserves our biosphere, protects endangered species, and helps preserve the earth’s natural resources. In society, the state of cleanliness represents the mindset of its inhabitants. It is more pleasant to spend time in a clean and tidy home than one that is cluttered and messy. Not only is it pleasing to have a well-organised space, but it can also be beneficial to your mental and physical health.
109. Who is better - he who founded his building32 on piety and seeking God’s Pleasure, or he who founded his building33 on the edge of a crumbling bank, which may crumble down with him into the Fire of Gehinnom 'Hell'? Allāh does not guide the 'persistently' wrongdoing people.
32. Like the mosque of Quba.
33. Like masjid al-dirar (mosque of harm).
110. The building34 which they have built will ever continue to be a source of unrest in their hearts, unless their hearts are torn to pieces35. For Allāh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
34. The mosque of harm.
35. I.e., till their death
111. Allāh has purchased from the believers their lives and their wealth in exchange for Paradise. They fight for the Cause of Allāh, so they kill (the enemies of peace) and are killed (for the truth and justice)36. This is a true Promise which He has Revealed in the Torah, the Evangel, and the Qur’an. No one is more true to his promise than Allāh. Rejoice then in the pledge which you have made. This is indeed the supreme triumph.
36. Muhammad, God's Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Allāh laughs at two men, one of them killed the other, yet they both entered Paradise. This one fought in the way of Allāh and was killed, then his killer repented and was also martyred.”
112. (Such believers are) the repentant, the sincere worshippers, the ever grateful and praising of God, the travelers through the land (for pious purposes), the observantly fasting, the bowing down and prostrating, the enjoiners of virtue and advisers against what is wrong, and the keepers of the boundaries of Allāh and His commands. So give good news to the believers.
113. It is not (proper) for the Prophet and those who believe that they should ask forgiveness for the polytheists, even though they be near relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are people of Hell.
114. Abraham’s asking forgiveness for his father was only owing to a promise which he had made to him; but when it became clear to him that he was an enemy of Allāh, he declared himself to be clear of him. Abraham was compassionate, forbearing.
115. Allāh does not misguide a people after He has guided them, rather He makes clear to them what they should avoid. Indeed, Allāh knows everything.
116. To Allāh belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth. He gives life and causes death. And besides Allāh, you have neither guardian, nor helper.
117. Allāh has turned to the Prophet, the Emigrants (for His Sake) in mercy, and the Helpers who followed him in the hour of difficulty (at Tabuk) after the hearts of a part of them were about to deviate, then He turned to them in mercy. To them He is certainly Most Kind, Most Merciful.
118. 'Allāh also turned in mercy to' the three37 who lagged behind38, (regretting their error) to the point that the earth became straitened to them despite its spaciousness and their souls were also straitened to them, and they knew for certain that there was no refuge from Allāh but to Him. Then He turned to them (mercifully) that they might repent (to Him). Indeed, Allāh is the Accepter of Repentance, the Most Merciful.
37. These are Kaʿab Ibn Mālik, Hilāl Ibn Umayyah, and Murārah Ibn al-Rabīʿ, who were sincere companions but, for one reason or another and without valid excuses, failed to join the Messenger ﷺ in his campaign to Tabuk.
38. Whose case was deferred for Decree of Allāh.
119. O believers, fear Allāh and be with the truthful39.
39. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said, "Truthfulness leads to righteousness, and righteousness leads to Paradise. And a man keeps on telling the truth until he becomes a truthful person. Lying leads to wickedness, and wickedness leads to the Hellfire, and a man may keep on telling lies till he is written before Allāh, a liar."
Telling the truth is a vital habit for Muslims to live out as they are surrendering their lives to Allāh. They need always to live the truth, to cease and put off falsehood, and to speak truthfully to all people. We must strive for truth in our words and actions.
Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things.
120. It was not (proper) for the people of Madinah and those around them of the dwellers of the desert to remain behind (after the departure of) God’s messenger, nor should they desire (anything) for themselves in preference to him. This is because there afflicts them not thirst or fatigue or hunger in God’s Way, nor do they tread a path which enrages the deniers, nor do they attain from an enemy (to God) what they attain, but a good deed is written down for them. Indeed, Allāh does not waste the reward of the good-doers.
121. Nor do they spend anything that may be spent, small or large, nor do they  traverse a valley, but it is written down to their credit, that Allāh may reward them according to the best of what they have done.
122. It is not (proper) for the believers to go forth (to war) all together at once. From within every group, if some remained behind to devote themselves to acquire a deeper knowledge of the (Islamic) religion, that they may admonish their people when they return to them, so that they may be cautious (and act accordingly to their perfect religion of Islam).
123. O believers, fight those of the deniers who are adjacent to you (who wage war against you) and let them find in you sternness. Know that Allāh is with the righteous.
124. Whenever a Surah (Chapter of the Qur’an) is revealed, there are some of them (the hypocrites) who say: "Which of you has it strengthened in faith?" Then as for those who believe (in the Truth), it strengthens them in faith and they rejoice.
125. But as for those 'hypocrites' in whose hearts is a sickness 'of doubt', it adds filth to their uncleanness, and they die while they are deniers.
126. Do they not see that they are being tested once or twice every year, yet they do not repent 'to Allāh', nor do they learn a lesson 'from it'.
127. Whenever a Chapter 'of the Qur’an' is revealed, they cast glances at one another: "Does any one see you?" Then they turn away. Allāh has turned away their hearts 'from the Truth', for they are a people who will not grasp it.
128. Certainly a messenger 'Muhammad' has come to you from among yourselves; hard to him is your falling into adversity, 'deeply' concerned for you, to the believers is kind and merciful.
129. But if they turn away40, then say: "Allāh is Enough for me, there is no god (worthy of worship) except Him. On Him do I rely - He is the Lord of the Great Throne.
40. the idolaters and the hypocrites - refraining from believing in you.
