Al-Mu’minūn

1. Successful and prosperous indeed are the believers¹,
1. Who believe in Allāh, His angels, His Books, His messengers, the Last Day, and the predestination.
2. Those who are in their prayers² wholeheartedly submissive (to Allāh).
2. Attending congregation and praying with all solemnity and full submissiveness strengthens one’s connection with Allāh. Prayer is about expressing love, gratitude, hope, fear to Allāh and finding meaning in life’s challenges and peace.
3. And they who turn away from idle talk³,
3. Let no bad words proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good, that builds, encourages, and strengthens others.
4. And they who are observant of the Zakah (poor-due)⁴,
4. I.e., Zakat, the obligatory alms. Muslims are obligated to pay 2.5% of the total value of their wealth less any liabilities in Zakat provided they reach the Nisab. The Nisab is the minimum amount that a Muslim must have before being obliged to pay Zakat. The Nisab was set by the Prophet Muhammad at a rate equivalent to 85 grams of gold or 609 grams of silver or its equivalent in money, taking into consideration the one lesser value will be the Nisab either the silver or the gold. Zakat is taken from the rich and given to the poor. Whoever cares for the poor lends to Allāh, who will pay back the sum in full. Giving to the poor, is another way someone can express their faith and is a way in which they can put “love for your brother as you love for yourself ” into action. It is unselfishly wishing others to be happy; to be delighted; to offer our affection and help freely without wanting anything in return. Eligible Muslims pay Zakat once a year, and it is due as soon as one lunar (Islamic) year passed.
5. And they who guard their private parts⁵,
5. This is the command of Allāh that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in honor and dignity, not in the passion of lust like the non-Muslims who do not know Allāh. No one transgresses in this matter, for Allāh has not called us for impurity, but in righteousness and honor. Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but Allāh. Chastity is the dignity of the body, the ornament of morality, the bond of modesty, the peacefulness of home, the source of purity, the purity in conduct and intention and abstention from unlawful sexual intercourse.
6. Except with their wives or those (bondwomen) whom they rightfully possess, for they will not be blamed;
7. But whoever seeks beyond that, then these are the transgressors.
8. And they who are true to their trusts⁶ and covenant⁷.
6.The word amaanah - trust - is general in meaning and encompasses all the duties of Islam. Everything that Allāh has enjoined upon His servant is an amaanah (trust), and the person must carry them out in the fullest sense. That also includes things that are entrusted to one by people, such as wealth, secrets and the like. The individual must pay attention to both matters and fulfill both trusts. The one who fulfills his duty towards Allāh and towards people will be rewarded, but the one who neglects his duty towards Allāh and towards people deserves punishment.
7. Promise, pledge. Whenever a person makes a promise, he or she must fulfill it; if he or she commits him/herself to something, whether it concerns other people or Allāh the Almighty, and then falls short of delivering on it, that is considered a breach of the pledge. The righteous believers never break their covenants, which is rather typical of immoral people and hypocrites. Islam warns against breaching covenants, even with enemies, unless they breach first. Treachery is a grave major sin, particularly when it comes from a person who is in a position of authority. That is because his infringement harms many people and he is not forced to do that because fulfilling it instead is within his capacity. There is abundant proof indicating the obligation of fulfilling covenants and the prohibition of breaching it.
9. And they who steadfastly maintain their prayer⁸;
8. By offering them at their proper times. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him was asked, "What deeds are the best?" The Prophet ﷺ said: "(1) To perform the (daily compulsory) prayers at their (early) stated fixed times, (2) to be good and dutiful to one's own parents, (3) and to participate in Jihad in Allah's Cause."
10. These are (indeed) the heirs,
11. Who will inherit Al-Firdaws (the highest place in Paradise); they will abide therein forever.
12. Indeed, We have created man of an extract of clay,
13. Then We placed him as a drop of sperm in a firm resting-place (in the womb),
14. Then We made the sperm-drop into a clinging clot, and We made the clot into a lump (of flesh), and We made (from) the lump, bones, and We covered the bones with flesh, then We brought it into being as another creation, so Blessed be Allāh, the Best of creators.
15. Then indeed, you after that will surely die.
16. Then indeed, on the Day of Resurrection, you will be resurrected.
17. And indeed, We have created above you seven layered 'heavens'; and never are We unaware of (Our) creation.
18. We send down water from the sky in 'due' measure, causing it to settle in the earth, and We are Able to take it away.
19. So We have brought into being for you therewith gardens of palm trees and grapevines; wherein you have abundant fruits and from which you may eat;
20. As well as 'olive' tree that grows out of Mount Sinai, which produces oil and a relish for its eaters.
21. And indeed there is a lesson for you in the cattle. We give you (milk) to drink out of what is in their bellies, and you have in them many benefits, and from their (meat) you eat.
22. And on them and on (the) ships⁹ you are carried.
9. In the sea, and other means of transport in the air.
23. And indeed We sent Noah to his people, and he said: "My people, worship Allāh alone, you have no god "worthy of worship' other than Him. Will you not then guard yourselves against evil?
24. The chiefs of those who disbelieved (in the Truth) among his people said: "This is not but a mortal man like you. He wants that he may have superiority over you. Had Allāh willed, He could have sent down angels. We have not heard of this among our fathers of old:
25. He is only a man possessed 'by a jinn', so wait him for a time¹⁰."
10. Perhaps he will come to his senses.
26. (Noah) said: "My Lord (Allah), help me, because they deny me."
27. So We inspired him, 'saying': "Make the Ship under Our Eyes and 'according to' Our inspiration. Then when comes Our command and gushes forth the oven, take board into it every kind of pair, two, and your family, except those against whom the Word has preceded (to perish). Do not speak to Me about those who do iniquity they will surely be drowned."
28. Then when you have settled, you and those with you in the ark, say: "All Praise be to Allāh who delivered us from the unjust people."
29. And say: "My Lord, let me land at a blessed landing place, for You are the Best accommodator."
30. Indeed, there are certainly signs in all this; and and indeed, We are ever testing.
31. Then We produced after them another generation (the people of ‘Aad).
32. So We sent among them a messenger (Hud) from themselves, saying: "Worship Allāh alone, you have no god (worthy of worship) other than Him; will you not then fear Allāh (and shun evil)?"
33. But the chiefs of his people who disbelieved and denied in the Meeting of the Hereafter, and whom We had given luxury in this world's life, said, "This is only a mortal man like you, eating of what you eat from and drinking of what you drink.
34. And If you (ever) obey a mortal like yourselves, then, you would certainly be losers.
35. Does he promise you that when you have died and become dust and bones that you shall be brought out (once again)?
36. far-fetched, far-fetched indeed is that which you are promised!
37. It (life) is not but our worldly life; we die and we live (but once), and we shall not be resurrected.
38. He is only a man who has invented a lie against Allāh (God), and we are not going to believe in him."
39. (Hud) said, "(O Allāh) my Lord, help me because they deny me."
40. He said: "In a little while indeed they will become regretful."
41. So the 'mighty' blast seized them in justice, and We made them as stubble; so away with the unjust people.
42. Then We produced after them other generations.
43. No nation can precede its term, nor yet postpone it.
44. Then We sent Our messengers in succession. Whenever there came to a nation its messenger, they rejected him, so We made some of them follow others 'in destruction' and We made them (as old) narrations (of the past). So away with a people who do not believe.
45. Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron, with Our signs and a clear authority,
46. To Pharaoh and his chiefs, but they behaved with arrogance and they were a haughty people¹¹.
11. By disobeying their Lord Allāh, and exalting themselves over and above His messengers.
47. So they said: "Shall we believe in two mortals (Moses and Aaron) like ourselves while their people are servants for us?”
48. So they denied them and were of those destroyed.
49. And indeed, We gave Moses the Scripture so that they might be guided.
50. And We made the son of Mary (Jesus) and his mother a Sign¹², and We sheltered them to a high land ground having resting place and spring.
12. I.e., the birth of Jesus taking place with no man touching Mary.
51. O Messengers, eat of the good (and lawful) things and act righteously. I am Well-Aware of all that you do13.
13. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) stated that a response to his prayer is unlikely for one who obtains his food, drinks and clothing from prohibited sources. In the narration it says: [The Prophet Muhammad] mentioned man who undertakes a lengthy journey and is dishevelled and covered with dust, and he stretches his hands towards heaven saying, ‘O Lord, O Lord,’ when his food is unlawful (bought with ill-gotten money), his drink is unlawful, his clothes are unlawful. He was nourished with what is unlawful, so how can he be granted a response to his prayer?." Thus eating from ill-gotten sources saps the strength of the prayer and weakens it.”
52. And indeed, this your religion is a (universal) one religion (Islam), and I am your Lord, so fear Me (alone, and shun evil).
53. So they (the people) cut off their religion among them into sects, each party rejoicing in that which is with them14.
14. Of beliefs, opinions, customs, disregarding the Truth of Islam.
54. So leave them in their confusion for a while.
55. Do they15 think that by what We provide to them with it of wealth and children,
15. These followers of different sects of the Jews and the Christians among others.
56.  We hasten for them of the good things? Rather, they do not perceive16.
16. Their error, and that this is a way of gradually drawing them into their destruction.
57. Indeed, those who are from the fear of their Lord are apprehensive,
58. And those who in the signs of their Lord do believe,
59. And those who with their Lord (Allāh) do not associate (anything in worship),
60. And those who give what they give17 while their hearts tremble with (awe, hope, and love of Him), because they are sure to return to their Lord (Allāh, for Reckoning);
17. In alms and perform other good deeds.
61. Those hasten in good deeds and they are foremost in (attaining) them.
62. We do not lay on any soul a burden except to the extent of its ability, and with Us is a record which speaks the truth, and they will not be dealt with unjustly.
63. Rather, their hearts (i.e., the deniers) are in confusion as to this (the Qur’an), and they have other (evil) deeds from besides this (their violation of the Oneness of God and disbelief) they for it are doers.
64. Until when We seize their affluent ones with torment, at once they are crying (to Allāh) for help.
65. Do not cry for help this Day. Indeed, from Us you will not be helped.
66. Indeed, My verses were recited to you, but you used to turn back on your heels.
67. being boastful of it (the Sacred House), babbling in evil talks by night, forsaking (the Truth of Islam).”
68. Then, have they not ponder the Word (of the Qur’an), or is it that there has come to them that which did not come to their fathers of old?
69. Or did they not know their messenger (Muhammad), so they are denying him?
70. Or do they say, "In him is insanity?" Rather, he has brought them the Truth, and most of them are averse to the Truth.
71. Had the Truth (i.e., Allāh) ever followed to their low desires, the heavens and the earth and all those who are therein would have been corrupted. Rather, We have brought them their Reminder, but from their Reminder (this Qur’an) they turn aside.
72. Or do you ask them for tribute? Yet the (bounteous) tribute of your Lord is best and He is the Best of providers.
73. And indeed, you (Muhammad) certainly invite them to a right Path.
74. And indeed, those who do not believe in the Hereafter from the Path (the only Path to Salvation) are deviating.
75. Even If We had mercy on them and removed what was upon them of any hardship (famine, poverty, sickness, etc), they would still persist in their transgression, wandering blindly.
76. And indeed, We have seized them with torment (as warning) but they did not yield to their Lord, nor did they humbly supplicate.
77. Until when We opened upon them a door of severe torment - immediately they will be therein in despair.
78. And It is He (Allāh) Who produced for you hearing and sight and minds. Little is it that you give thanks.
79. And it is He Who multiplied you in the earth, and to Him you shall be 'all' gathered.
80. And It is He (Allāh) Who gives life and causes death, and in His 'control' is the alternation of the night and day. Will you not then understand?
81. Rather, they say like what the former people said,
82. They say: "When we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we really be resurrected?
83. We have been promised this, we, and our fathers from before. This is nothing but the tales of former people ."
84. Say, "To whom belongs the earth, and whoever is in it, if you 'really' know?"
85. They will say: "(It belongs to) Allāh." Say: "Will you not then take heed?"
86. Say, "Who is Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Great Throne?"
87. They will say: " To Allāh." Say: "Will you not then guard yourselves against evil)?"
88. Say, "In Whose Hand is the sovereignty of all things, while He protects while none can protect against Him, if you do but know?"
89. They will say: "(all belongs) to Allāh." Say: "Then how are you deluded?"
90. Rather, We have brought them the Truth and indeed they are certainly liars.
91. Never did Allāh take for Himself of any son, and never was there with him any (other) god - in that case would each god have taken away what he created, and some of them would have overpowered others. Glory be to Allāh, (He is High) above what they attribute to Him.
92. (He is) the Knower of the unseen and the seen, so may He be Exalted above whatever they associate as partners (with Him in worship).
93. Say: "My Lord (Allāh), If you should show me that which they are promised;
94. Lord, then do not place me among the unjust people."
95. And indeed, We are surely able to show you whatever We threaten them.
96. Repel evil with that which is best. We know best what they attribute (to Us).
97. And say: My Lord (Allāh), I seek refuge by You from the temptations of the devils;
98. And I seek refuge by You, Lord, lest they be present with me."
99. Until when death comes one of them, he says: "Lord (Allāh), send me back again (to the world);
100. So I may do good in what i left behind. No! It is a mere word that he only saying; and behind them is a barrier until the Day when they are resurrected.
101. So when the trumpet is blown, there will be no kindred relations between them on that Day, nor shall they ask of one another.
102. So, those whose scales (of good deeds) are heavy, these are the successful.
103. And those whose scales (of good deeds) are light, those are they who will lose their own selves, abiding in Gehinnom (Hell) forever.
104. The Fire lashes their faces, and they are therein gloomily frowning.
105. "Were not My verses recited to you? And you used to deny them."
106. They will say: "Our Lord, our Wretchedness has overcame us and we were a people astray.
107. Our Lord, take us out of it; then if ever we return 'to evil', indeed we are unjust."
108. (Allāh) will say: "Be despised therein, and do not speak to Me."
109. Indeed, there was a party of My servants who always prayed: "Our Lord, we have believed, so forgive us and have Mercy on us, for You are the Best of all those who show mercy."
110. But you took them in mockery until they made you forget My remembrance, and you used to laugh at them.
111. Surely I have rewarded them this Day for their patiently endurance18, that they are winners.
18. When people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Allāh. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. If you are not familiar with the history of the prophets, you will not do well when you suffer any kind of slander or persecution for Allah’s sake.
112. He (Allāh) will say (to those doomed to Hell): "How long did you remain on earth (in) number of years?"
113. They will say: "We remained a day or part of a day, so ask the time keepers.
114. (Allāh) will say: "You stayed not but a little while- if only you had known;
115. Did you then think that We had created you in vain19, and that you shall not be returned to Us (for Judgment)?"
19. Without meaning or purpose.
116. So exalted be Allāh, the True King; there is no god 'worthy of worship' except Him, the Lord of the Honorable Throne.
117. Whoever invokes besides Allāh another god - no proof he has for it - his Reckoning is only with his Lord (Allāh). Surely The disbelievers will not succeed.
118. Say: "Lord (Allah), forgive and have Mercy, and You are the Best of the merciful."
