Al-Mu’minūn

1. Triumphant indeed are the believers¹,
1. Who believe in Allah (God), His angels, His Book, the Qur’an, His messengers, whose last is the prophet Muhammad, the Last Day, and the predestination.
2. Who are wholeheartedly submissive to Allah (God) in their prayers².
2. Attending congregation and praying with all solemnity and full submissiveness strengthens one’s connection with Allah (God). Prayer is about expressing hope, gratitude to Allah, and finding meaning in life’s challenges and peace.
3. Who avoid foul speech³,
3. Let no bad words proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good, that builds, encourages, and strengthens others.
4. Who pay the poor-rate⁴,
4. Muslims are obligated to pay 2.5% of the total value of their wealth less any liabilities in Zakat provided they reach the nisab. The nisab is the minimum amount that a Muslim must have before being obliged to pay zakat. The Nisab was set by the Prophet Muhammad at a rate equivalent to 85 grams of gold or 609 grams of silver or its equivalent in money. Zakat is taken from the rich and given to the poor. Whoever cares for the poor lends to Allah, who will pay back the sum in full. Giving to the poor, is another way someone can express their faith and is a way in which they can put “love for your brother as you love for yourself ” into action. Eligible Muslims pay Zakat once a year, and it is due as soon as one lunar (Islamic) year passed.
5. And who restrain their carnal desires⁵,
5. This is the command of Allah (God) that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in honor and dignity, not in the passion of lust like the non-Muslims who do not know Allah (God). No one transgresses in this matter, for Allah has not called us for impurity, but in righteousness and honor. Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but Allah. Chastity is the dignity of the body, the ornament of morality, the bond of modesty, the peacefulness of home, the source of purity, the purity in conduct and intention and abstention from unlawful sexual intercourse.
6. Except with their wives or those their right hands possess, for then, they will not be blamed;
7. But whoever seeks beyond that, then these are the transgressors.
8. Those who are true to their trusts⁶ and covenant⁷.
6.The word amaanah - trust - is general in meaning and encompasses all the duties of Islam. Everything that Allah has enjoined upon His servant is an amaanah (trust), and the person must carry them out in the fullest sense. That also includes things that are entrusted to one by people, such as wealth, secrets and the like. The individual must pay attention to both matters and fulfill both trusts. The one who fulfills his duty towards Allah and towards people will be rewarded, but the one who neglects his duty towards Allah and towards people deserves punishment.
7. Promise, pledge. Whenever a person makes a promise, he or she must fulfill it; if he or she commits him/herself to something, whether it concerns other people or Allah the Almighty, and then falls short of delivering on it, that is considered a breach of the pledge. The righteous believers never break their covenants, which is rather typical of immoral people and hypocrites. Islam warns against breaching covenants, even with enemies, unless they breach first. Treachery is a grave major sin, particularly when it comes from a person who is in a position of authority. That is because his infringement harms many people and he is not forced to do that because fulfilling it instead is within his capacity. There is abundant proof indicating the obligation of fulfilling covenants and the prohibition of breaching it.
9. Who are steadfast in their prayer⁸;
8. By offering them at their proper times. The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said: “Pray as you have seen me praying."
10. These are indeed the heirs,
11. Who will inherit Al-Firdaws (the highest place in Paradise); they will abide therein forever.
12. We have created man of an extract of clay,
13. Then We placed him as a drop of sperm in a firm resting-place (in the womb),
14. Then We made the drop a clot, then made the clot a lump (of flesh), then made (from) the lump, bones, then covered the bones with flesh, then We caused it to grow into another creation, so Blessed be Allah, the Best of creators.
15. Then after that you will certainly die.
16. Then on the Day of Resurrection you shall be raised up (from the dead).
17. We have created seven heavens above you; and never are We unmindful of (Our) creation.
18. We send down water from the sky in (due) measure, then cause it to settle in the earth, and We are Able to take it away.
19. Then We cause to grow thereby gardens of palm trees and grapevines for you; you have in them many fruits and from them you eat;
20. And an (olive) tree that grows out of Mount Sinai, which produces oil and a relish for its eaters.
21. There is a lesson for you in the cattle. We provide you with a drink out of what is in their bellies, and you have in them many benefits, and from their (meat) you eat.
22. You are carried by them (the animals on land) and by the ships⁹.
9. In the sea, and other means of transport in the air.
23. We sent Noah to his people, and he said: "My people, worship Allah alone, you have no God (worthy of worship) other than Him. Will you not then fear Allah (God) and shun evil?
24. The chiefs of those who denied from among his people said: "He is a mere mortal man like you. He wants that he may have superiority over you. Had Allah willed, He could have sent down angels. We have not heard of this among our fathers of old:
25. He is only a man possessed (by a spirit), so wait (and have patience) with him for a time¹⁰."
10. Perhaps he will come to his senses.
26. (Noah) said: " Sovereign Lord [Allah], help me because they deny me."
27. So We inspired to him, 'saying': "Make the Ship under Our Eyes and (according to) Our guidance. When Our command comes and the oven gushes forth, take board into it every kind of pair, two, and your family, except those among them against whom the Word (Decree) has gone forth (to perish). Do not speak to Me about those who work iniquity they will be drowned."
28. When you are firmly seated, you and those with you in the Ship, say: "All Praise be to Allah who delivered us from the unjust people."
29. And say: "(O Allah my) Lord, cause me to disembark a blessed landing place, for You are the Best accommodator."
30. In this (story) there are evidences (of the Truth); thus do We ever try (people).
31. Then We raised up after them another generation (the people of ‘Aad).
32. We sent to them a messenger from among them (Hud), saying: "Worship Allah alone, you have no God (worthy of worship) other than Him; will you not then fear Allah (God) and shun evil?"
33. But the chiefs of his people who denied and disbelieved in the Meeting of the Hereafter, whom We had made prosperous in this worldly life, said: "This is only a mortal man like you, eating of what you eat from and drinking of what you drink.
34. If you obey a mortal like you, then you are losers;
35. Does he promise you that when you are dead and become dust and bones that you shall then be brought forth?
36. Far, far is that which you are promised.
37. There is nothing but the life of this world; we die and we live (but once), and we shall not be raised up (from the dead).
38. He is only a man who has invented a lie against Allah 'God', and we are not going to believe in him."
39. (Hud) said: " Sovereign Lord Allah, help me because they deny me."
40. Allah said: "After a short while they will be regretful."
41. So the shriek seized them in justice, and We made them as stubble; so away with the unjust people.
42. Then We raised after them other generations.
43. No people can hasten on their term nor can they postpone it.
44. Then We sent Our messengers one after another. Whenever there came to a people their messenger, they rejected him, so We made some of them follow others (in destruction) and We made them (as old) narrations (of the past). So away with a people who do not believe.
45. Then We sent Moses and his brother Aaron, with Our signs and a clear authority,

46. To Pharaoh and his counsel, but they behaved with arrogance and they were people self-exalting¹¹.
11. By disobeying their Lord Allah, and exalting themselves over and above His messengers.
47. They said: "Shall we believe in two men (Moses and Aaron) like ourselves while their people are slaves for us?"
48. So they denied them and became of those who perished.
49. We gave the Scripture (Torah) to Moses that they may be guided.

50. [As We exalted Moses, also] We made the son of Mary (Jesus) and his mother a Sign¹², and sheltered them on a lofty ground having meadow and spring.
12. I.e., the birth of Jesus taking place with no man touching Mary.
51. Messengers, eat of the good and pure things and act righteously. I am Well-Aware of all that you do.

52. Indeed, this your religion is one 'universal' religion (Islam), and I am 'Allah' your Sovereign Lord, so uphold My commandments and guard against evil.

53. But they (the people) split their religion among themselves into sects, each part rejoicing in that which is with them¹³.
13. Of beliefs, opinions, customs, disregarding the Truth of Islam.

68. Is it then that they do not ponder over what is said, or is it that there has come to them that which did not come to their fathers of old?
69. Or did they not know their messenger (Muhammad), so they deny him?
70. Or do they say, "He is possessed (by a spirit)?" Rather, he has brought them the Truth, and most of them are averse to the Truth.
71. Had the Truth (i.e., Allah) conform to their low desires, the heavens and the earth and all those who are therein would have been corrupted. Rather, We have brought to them their Reminder, but from their Reminder (this Qur’an) they turn away.
72. Or is it that you ask them for payment? But the reward of (Allah) your Lord is Best and He is the Best of providers.
73. And certainly you (Muhammad) invite them to a right Path.
74. But those who do not truly believe in the Hereafter are deviating from the (Islamic) Way - (the only Way to Salvation).
75. Even If We were to grant them mercy and remove from them hardship (famine, poverty, sickness, etc), they would still persist in their insolence blindly wandering on.
76. We seized them with torment, but they were not submissive to their Lord (Allah), nor did they humble themselves to Him.
77. Until when We open upon them a door of severe torment - at once they are in despair.
78. It is He (Allah) Who made for you hearing and vision and hearts. Little is it that you give thanks.
79. It is He Who multiplied you in the earth, and to Him you shall (all) be gathered (for Judgment).
80. It is He Who gives life and causes death, and (in) His (control) is the alternation of the night and day. Do you not then understand?
81. Rather, they say the like of what the ancients said,
82. They say: "When we are dead and become dust and bones, shall we then be raised up (from the dead)?"
83. We have been promised this, and (so were) our fathers before. These are no more than ancient stories (lies).
84. Say: "To whom belongs the earth, and whoever is therein, if you know?"
85. They will say: "(It belongs to) Allah." Say: "Will you not then take heed?"
86. Say: "Who is the Sovereign Lord of the seven heavens and the Lord of the Great Throne?"
87. They will say: " Allah." Say: "Will you not then fear Allah and shun evil?"
88. Say: "Who is it in Whose Hand is the sovereignty of all things and Who is it that protects, while against Him there is no protection, if you do but know?"
89. They will say: "Allah." Say: "How you are then deluded?"
90. Rather, We have brought them the Truth and they are certainly liars.
91. Never did Allah take for Himself a son (or daughters), and never was there with him any (other) god - in that case would each god have taken away what he created, and some of them would have overpowered others. Glory be to Allah, (He is High) above what they attribute to Him.
92. (He is) the Knower of the unseen and the seen, so may He be Exalted above all that they associate as partners with Him.
93. Say: "Lord, if You would make me see what they are threatened with;
94. Lord, do not place me with the unjust people."
95. We are Well-Able to make you see what We threaten them.
96. Repel evil with that which is best. We know best what they attribute (to Us).
97. Say: Lord (Allah), I seek refuge in You from the evil suggestions of the devils;
98. And I seek refuge in You my Lord from their presence."
99. When death approaches one of them (the deniers), he says: "Sovereign Lord 'Allah', send me back (to the world) again;
100. So that perhaps I shall act righteously for the rest of my life. By no means, it is a (mere) word that he speaks; and behind them is a barrier until the Day when they are raised up (from the dead).
101. When the trumpet is blown, there will be no kindred relations between them on that Day, nor shall they ask of each other.
102. As for those whose scales (of good deeds) are heavy, these are the successful.
103. But those whose scales (of good deeds) are light, these are the ones who will lose their own selves, abiding in Gehinnom (Hell) forever.
104. The Fire will scorch their faces, and they will be groaning therein in pain.
105. "Were not My verses recited to you? But you used to deny them."
106. They will say: "Our Lord, our hard-heartedness overcame us and we were a people astray.
107. Our Lord, take us out of it; then if ever we return (to evil), indeed we are unjust."
108. (Allah) will say: "Remain despised in it (Hell) and do not speak to Me."
109. There was a party of My servants who always prayed: "Our Sovereign Lord, we have believed, so forgive us and have Mercy on us, for You are the Best of all those who show mercy."
110. But you took them for a mockery until they made you forget My remembrance, and you used to laugh at them.
111. I have rewarded them this Day for their patient endurance and obedience¹⁷, that they are indeed the achievers of success.
17. When people insult you and persecute you, and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of Allah. Rejoice and be glad, for your reward in heaven is great; for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you. If you are not familiar with the history of the prophets, you will not do well when you suffer any kind of slander or persecution for Allah’s sake.
112. Allah will ask (those doomed to Hell): "How many years did you remain on earth?"
113. They will say: "We remained a day or part of a day, ask those who keep count."
114. Allah will say: "You have remained there for a short time - if you had only known (during your life time);
115. Did you then think that We had created you in vain18, and that you shall not be returned to Us (for Judgment)?"
18. Without meaning or purpose.
116. So exalted be Allah, the True King; there is no God (worthy of worship) except Him, the Lord of the Honorable Throne.
117. Whoever invokes besides Allah another god - no proof he has for it - his Reckoning is only with 'Allah' the Sovereign Lord. Verily, the deniers will not succeed.
118. Say: "Sovereign Lord 'Allah', forgive and have Mercy, for You are the Best of those who show mercy."
