(60) Have you ˹Muhammad˺ not seen those who falsely claim that they Believe[902] in what was sent down to you and what was sent down before you[903]; ˹yet still˺ they want to resort to false gods[904] to adjudicate ˹their disputes˺, when they were commanded to reject it[905]—Satan wants to swerve them far off the path ˹of guidance˺.
[902] The hypocrites whose hearts are diseased.
[903] The Qur’an and earlier Scriptures, respectively.
[904] According to ʿAbdullāh Ibn ʿAbbās (رضي الله عنهما) this aya was revealed with regards to a group of the Aslam tribe, who professed Islam, then went to Abū Zurārah al-Aslamī, the soothsayer, to settle a dispute. (al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Kathīr, al-Saʿdī)
[905] Judgement which is not in accordance with what God sent down to His Messenger (ﷺ). (al-Ṭabarī, Ibn Kathīr, al-Saʿdī)
