2. But those who believe and do righteous deeds¹, and believe in (this Qur’an) that has been sent down to Muhammad², and it is the very Truth from their Lord (Allah), He will expiate from them their sins, and will make good their condition.
1. The companions of the Prophet said: "While we were sitting with the Prophet in the mosque, a man came riding on a camel. He made his camel kneel down in the mosque, tied its foreleg and then said: "Who amongst you is Muhammad?" At that time the Prophet was sitting amongst us (his companions) leaning on his arm. We replied: "This white man reclining on his arm." The man then addressed him, "O Son of 'Abdul Muttalib."The Prophet said: "I am here to answer your questions." The man said to the Prophet: "I want to ask you something and will be hard in questioning. So do not get angry." The Prophet said, "Ask whatever you want." The man said, "I ask you by your Lord, and the Lord of those who were before you, has Allah sent you as a messenger to all the mankind?" The Prophet replied, "By Allah, yes." The man further said, "I ask you by Allah, has Allah ordered you to offer five prayers in a day and night (24 hours).? He replied, "By Allah, Yes." The man further said, "I ask you by Allah, has Allah ordered you to observe fasts during this month of the year (i.e. Ramadan)?" He replied, "By Allah, yes." The man further said, "I ask you by Allah, has Allah ordered you to take Zakat (obligatory charity) from our rich people and distribute it amongst our poor people?" The Prophet replied, "By Allah, yes." Thereupon that man said, "I have believed in all that with which you have been sent, and I have been sent by my people as an envoy."
2. Muhammad, God's messenger said: "My similitude in comparison with the other prophets before me, is that of a man who has built a house nicely and beautifully, except for a place of one brick in a corner. The people go about it and wonder at its beauty, but say, 'Would that this brick be put in its place'."
This is really a prophecy mentioned in the Psalm 118: "The stone which the builders refused is become the head stone of the corner," (Psalm 118:22). And Jesus mentioned again in the Gospel. "Jesus said unto them, Did you never read in the Scriptures, The stone which the builders rejected, the same is become the head of the corner ?" (Matthew 21:42). The Jewish had refused Ishmael and also the Prophet Muhammad as God's last and final messenger, but the day would come when they would have to confess their sad mistake.
3. This is because those who deny (Allah and His messenger) follow falsehood, while those who believe follow the Truth from their Lord (Allah). Thus does Allah set forth for mankind their examples.
4. So, when you meet those who deny (the Truth, in battle), smite 'their' necks until when you have thoroughly subdued them, then bind a bond firmly (on them), and afterwards either set them free as a favor or let them ransom (themselves) until the war ends (and Peace prevails). That is (Our command). If Allah had willed, He Himself would certainly have chastised them, but He wants to test some of you by means of others. Those who are killed in the Cause of Allah, never will He render their (good) deeds void.
10. Have they not traveled through the land and seen how was the end of those before them. Allah brought down destruction upon them (for their sins), and the deniers will also face a similar perdition.
12. Allah will admit those who believe and do righteous deeds Gardens under which rivers flow. But those who deny enjoy themselves (in this world) and eat as cattle eat, and the Fire will be their final abode.
13. How many a (sinful) town which was more powerful than your town (Makkah) that expelled you, We (Allah) destroyed them, and there was no helper for them.
15. The Garden which is promised to the pious ones is like one in which there are rivers of unpolluted water, rivers of milk of unchangeable taste, rivers of delicious wine for drinkers, and rivers of crystal clear honey. They will have therein all (kinds of) fruits and forgiveness from (Allah) their Lord. (Are these) like those who will abide in the (eternal) fire forever, and will drink boiling water which will rip their intestines to bits and pieces?
16. Among them (the hypocrites) are some who (pretend to) listen to you (Muhammad), until when they go forth from you, they say to those who have been given the knowledge: "What was it that he said just now?" These are the ones upon whose hearts Allah has set a seal, and who follow their lowly desires.
18. Do they then wait for anything except the Hour (of Doom) that it should come to them all of a sudden? Its Signs have (already) appeared. How will they then come to their senses when it suddenly comes to them?
19. Know that there is no (true) God except Allah. Ask forgiveness for your sin, and for (the sins of) the believing men and women. Allah knows well when you move and when you rest.
20. Those who believe say: "Why is a Chapter (about fighting for the Cause of God) not sent down (to us)?" But when a decisive Chapter (of the Qur’an) is sent down, and fighting (against the enemies of Peace) is mentioned therein, you will see those in whose hearts is a sickness (of hypocrisy) look to you with the look of one suffering the agony of death. Woe to them.
21. (Better for them would have been) obedience (to Allah) and good words. When the matter (of fighting against the forces of evil) is decided, if they had been true to Allah (God), it would certainly have been better for them.
22. Would you then, if you turn away (from Islam)³ cause corruption in the land and sever the ties of kinship⁴?
3. Another meaning: Would you then, if held authority in the land, you would disobey (Allah), spread mischief, and violate the family ties.
4. Muhammad, God's Messenger, said: "Three (types of people) will not enter Paradise: (1) the habitual wine (alcohol) drinker, (2) the believer in sorcery (and astrology is among it), and (3) the one who severs blood relations."
24. Do they not then reflect on the Qur’an? Or are there locks on their hearts?5
5. Out of the heart come evil thoughts. The state of our heart matters because evil residing there can overflow into our lives. Both our exterior and interior matter.
One of the most powerful ways to grow in our relationship with Allah is to read the Qur’an. Allah (God) reveals Himself to us through the Qur’an that we might know Him personally. The Qur’an grant us guidance on how to live in this life and provide comfort when we face times of sorrow. In addition to that, it is the Word of Allah that protects us from evil.
The Word of Allah offers freedom, healing, and hope.
25. Those who have turned their backs (as apostates) after the guidance has become manifest to them, it is Satan who enticed them and deceived them with false hopes.
26. This is because they (the hypocrites) say to those (idolaters who) hate what Allah has sent down (of this Qur’an): "We shall obey you in some of the matters." Allah knows their secret schemes.
30. Had We willed, We could have shown them to you, so that you would certainly have recognized them by their marks and you can recognize them by the tone of (their) speech. Allah knows all your deeds.
31. We shall test you until We make evident those among you who strive hard (for the Cause of Allah), and the patient ones, and make your case (and inner merits) manifest.
32. Those who deny (the Islamic faith), and turn away (people) from Allah’s Way, and oppose the Messenger (Muhammad) after the guidance has become clear to them, they cannot harm Allah in any way, and He will make void their (good) deeds.
33. Believers, obey Allah (God) and obey the messenger (Muhammad), and do not invalidate your (good) deeds6.
6. One of the well-established facts that is affirmed by the Qur’an is that sins and major sins do not erase all of the good deeds of the believer, and that there is nothing that erases the good deeds of a believer altogether except denial of faith and polytheism i.e., associating partners (equals) with Allah.
35. Do not be weak hearted and do not appeal for (unjust) settlement; you have the upper hand. Allah (God) is with you, and He will never decrease the reward of your good deeds.
36. The life of this world is only play and passing delight. If you believe7 and fear Allah, and shun evil, He will give you your rewards, and will not ask you your wealth8.
7. in Allah and His messenger Muhammad
8. All of it, rather, only the alms that are required from it.
38. Here you are - those who are called to spend in Allah’s Way - but among you are those who are niggardly. And whoever is niggardly, is miserly against his own self. Allah is Rich (free of all needs) and you are poor who stand in need (of Him). If you turn away, He will bring in your place another people, then they will not be like you.
