20. And the believers say: "Why has not a Chapter (about fighting for the Cause of God) sent down 'to us'?" But when a decisive Chapter 'of the Qur’an' is revealed, and fighting is mentioned therein, you will see those in whose hearts is a sickness 'of hypocrisy' look to you with the look of one suffering the agony of death. Woe to them.
21. (Better for them would have been) obedience 'to Allāh' and good words. When the matter (of fighting against the forces of evil) is decided, if they had been true to Allāh, it would certainly have been better for them.
22. Would you then, if you turn away4 cause corruption in the land and sever the ties of kinship5?
4. Another meaning: Would you then, if you held authority in the land, you would disobey (Allāh), spread mischief, and violate the family ties.
5. Muhammad, God's Messenger, said: "Three (types of people) will not enter Paradise: (1) the habitual wine (alcohol) drinker, (2) the believer in sorcery (and astrology is among it), and (3) the one who severs the ties of kinship."
24. Do they not then reflect on the Qur’an? Or are there locks on their hearts?6
6. Out of the heart come evil thoughts. The state of our heart matters because evil residing there can overflow into our lives. Both our exterior and interior matter.
One of the most powerful ways to grow in our relationship with Allāh is to read the Qur’an. Allāh (God) reveals Himself to us through the Qur’an that we might know Him well. The Qur’an grant us guidance on how to live in this life and provide comfort when we face times of sorrow. In addition to that, it is the Word of Allāh that protects us from evil. The Word of Allāh offers freedom, healing, and hope.
25. Those who have turned their backs 'as apostates' after the guidance has become clear to them, it is Satan who enticed them, filling them with false hopes.
26. This is because they say to those who hate what Allāh has sent down 'of revelation': "We shall obey you in certain matters." But Allāh knows their secrets.
