1. When the hypocrites¹ come to you, they say: "We testify that you (Muhammad) are the messenger of God." And Allah (God) knows that you are His messenger. Allah testifies that the hypocrites are liars (in their declaration of faith).
1. The Prophet Muhammad (ﷺ) said: "Whoever has the following four (characteristics) is a pure hypocrite and whoever has one of the following four characteristics, have one characteristic of hypocrisy unless and until he gives it up:
a. When he is entrusted, he betrays (proves dishonest).
b. When he speaks, he lies.
c. When he makes a covenant, he proves treacherous.
d. When he quarrels, he behaves in a very imprudent, evil, and insulting manner."
He also said: "The worst people before Allah on the Day of Judgment will be the double-faced people who appear to some people with one face and to other people with another face."
4. When you see them, their appearance impresses you. And if they speak, you carefully listen to their speech. They are, in your presence, as propped up hollow pieces of wood (understanding nothing); they think every cry which they hear is against them. They are truly the enemy, so beware of them. May Allah condemn them. How deluded they are!
5. When they are told: "Come, so that the messenger of Allah may ask forgiveness for you," they turn back their heads, and you may see them turning away while they are arrogant.
6. It is all the same for them whether you ask forgiveness for them or do not ask forgiveness for them; Allah will never forgive them. For Allah does not guide the rebellious people (against God).
7. It is they who say: "Give nothing to those who are with the Messenger of Allah until they disperse (from him)." To Allah belong the treasures of the heavens and the earth, but the hypocrites do not understand.
8. They say: "When we return to Madinah, the more honored (with power)² will certainly drive out the more humble therefrom³." Honor belongs to Allah (alone) and so shall it be for His messenger and for the believers - but the hypocrites do not know.
2. Referring to the head of the hypocrites in Madinah at that time.
3. The Prophet and the believers.
9. Believers, let not your wealth, nor your children, distract you from the Remembrance of Allah.⁴ And whosoever does that, these are the (real) losers.
10. Spend (for the Cause of Allah) out of what We have given you, before death approaches you, and say: "Lord, if only You would delay me to a near term, so I would give charity and be among the righteous"⁵.
5. The basic meaning of “righteous” is conforming with the Qur’an and the Sunnah. The righteous are people who have entered into covenant with Allah by faith and seek to live according to His Word. They may do unrighteous things at times, but they know to find forgiveness because they want to do what is right. In contrast, the wicked are those who don’t love Allah (God), or reject God’s laws, or those committed to violence and oppression. When reading the Qur’an and the Sunnah, it’s important to differentiate between righteous living and righteous standing - the righteousness God gives people who live by faith. Righteous living without faith (simply keeping a certain moral code) never leads to righteous standing, whereas righteous standing based on faith always leads to righteous living. Just keeping a moral code cannot lead to righteous standing because no person is sinless and Allah gives righteous standing to only those with faith in Him and His messenger Muhammad.
