1. All praise be to Allāh, Originator of the heavens and the earth, Who made the angels 'as His' messengers having wings, two, three, or four¹. He increases in creation whatever He wills. Surely Allāh has full Power over all things.
1. The Qur'an is filled with verses about angels. Allāh is the Creator, and therefore, He created angels. Filled with the power given by Allāh, angels are messengers of Allāh, created to serve and worship Him. Angels can intercede and protect His creations. Allāh commands also his angels to guard the true believers.
2. Whatever Allāh grants to the people of (His) mercy, none can withhold it. And whatever He withholds, none can grant it thereafter. For He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.
3. O people, remember the Favor of Allāh upon you. Is there any creator other than Allāh who provides for you from the heaven and earth? There is no (true) god except Him. So how are you deluded?
5. O people, the Promise of Allāh is always true. So let not the life of this world deceive you², nor let the chief deceiver (Satan) deceive you about Allāh³.
2. One should not be overly attached to worldly (non-spiritual) things. Believers are to love Allāh and His messenger Muhammad, and love one another, not the world or possessions. Those who love the world whole heartedly, cannot truly love Allāh. These highlight the contrast between love of the world and love of Allāh. Jesus offered an example of this contrast when He was tempted by Satan in the wilderness. Satan told Jesus He could rule all the kingdoms of the world - if He would bow down to him. Jesus replied, "Be gone, Satan. For it is written: You shall worship Allāh your God and him only shall you serve and worship".
3. O Allāh, deliver me from the devil’s deception. Saving God, give me grace to live for You and die for you, to pray to You only and to make my sacrifices and vows to You only. There is none like You O Allāh, and there is no god besides You.
6. Satan is an enemy to you, so consider him as an enemy⁴. He only invites his party to be among the inmates of the Hellfire.
4. Satan is to be looked upon as an enemy, and to be opposed as such, and to be watched and guarded against; the whole armour of God should be taken and made use of, particularly the weapon of prayer, the word of God 'the Qur’an', and the shield of faith; and also the grace of humility.
7. Those who deny (Allāh and His messengers), they will have a severe torment, but those who believe and do righteous deeds, they will have forgiveness and a great Reward (of Paradise).
8. Is he, to whom the evil of his deeds is made fair seeming to him, so much so that he considers them good (equal to one who is rightly guided)? Allāh (justly) leaves astray whom He wills, and guides (as a favor from Him) whom He wills. Let not yourself waste away in sorrowing over them. Allāh is All-Knowing of what they do.
9. It is Allāh Who sends the winds so they raise the clouds, then We drive them on to a dead land, and revive therewith the earth after its death. Such is the Resurrection.
10. Whoever seeks honor, then to Allāh (alone) belongs all Glory and Power. To Him ascends the good words; and the righteous deeds uplift them. But those who plot evil deeds⁵, they will have a severe torment; and the plotting of those will perish.
5. Allāh commanded us that we maintain true justice; show mercy and compassion to one another, that we do not oppress the widow or the orphan, the stranger, the foreigner or the poor, and that we do not plot evil against each other.
11. Allāh created you from dust, then out of a drop of sperm, then He made you in pairs. No female conceives nor does she give birth except with His knowledge. No aged person has his life lengthened, nor is anything diminished of one’s life, but it is all in a Register. Indeed, this is easy for Allāh.
12. The two bodies of water are not alike, one is sweet, palatable, and pleasant to drink and the other is salty and bitter. Yet from each of them you eat fresh tender meat and bring forth ornaments which you wear. You see the ships cleave through it, so that you may seek His favor, and be grateful.
13. He merges the night into the day, and the day into the night, and subjected the sun and the moon - each one follows its course to an appointed time. Such is Allāh, your Lord, to Him belongs the Kingdom. Those whom you invoke besides Him do not control (even) the husk of a date stone.
14. If you invoke them they do not hear your supplication, and even if they could hear they will not answer you. On the Day of Resurrection they will deny your worship of them. None can tell you (the truth) like the One Who is All-Aware (Allāh).
18. No one will bear the sin of another⁶, and if one weighed down by his load should call for (another to carry) his burden, nothing of it will be carried, even though he be a close relative. You warn only those who fear their Lord 'Allāh' though unseen and keep up the prayer. Whoever purifies himself, he only does so for his own good. To Allāh is the final return.
6. From the Justice of Allāh is that He will not count others who are innocent, as guilty for the sins of their fathers through ‘ancestral’ or ‘original’ sin.
22. Neither are the living and the dead alike. Allāh makes whom He wills hear, but you cannot make hear those who are in the graves⁷.
7. The four examples given by Allāh in verses 19-22 are those of the believer and unbeliever, disbelief and belief, Paradise and Hellfire, and those receptive to guidance and those unreceptive.
8. I.e. your duty is to convey God's Message to mankind but the guidance is God's. Prophet Muhammad is mercy given by Allāh to all others. He did everything to show the people the right way. He was shelter to those who feel marginalized, such as the poor, strangers, foreigners, and the elderly, ensuring they feel part of the community.
24. We have sent you (Muhammad) with the Truth being a bearer of good news and a warner⁹. No nation but a warner had passed among them.
9. Sending Prophet Muhammad as God's last and final messenger is great blessing. Allāh sent the Prophet Muhammad into the world to convey His message, and we praise Prophet Muhammad for it. We are grateful to our prophet who, at the end of His call to Islamic Monotheism, was able to look to heaven and say, “I have brought you glory on earth by finishing well the mission you gave me to do. The Prophet Muhammad’s mission was to fulfill God's plan on the earth, to seek and save the pagans, the lost Jews and Christians and guide them all to the straight Path of Islam.
25. If they reject you (Muhammad), those before them also rejected (the Truth), their messengers had come to them with clear Proofs, written Ordinances, and the enlightening Scripture.
27. Do you not see that Allāh sends down water from the sky then We bring forth therewith fruits of various colors? He has made streaks of various colors in the mountains, white, red, and intense black.
28. And (He has also created) people, beasts and cattle of various colors. Only Allah's knowledgeable servants fear Him. Indeed, Allāh is All-Mighty, Most Forgiving.
29. Those who recite the Book of Allāh (the Qur’an)10 and keep up the prayer and spend (for the Cause of Allāh) out of what We have given them, secretly and openly, (they) hope for a bargain that will never fail.
10. Reciting the Qur’an is a spiritual discipline, which means that we need to be disciplined in how we approach it. If you lack the desire to recite the Qur’an, pray and ask that Allāh would give you a desire for his word. Then, build a time into your day to recite his Book and make this time a priority. You should then find people to hold you accountable to a reciting plan. Maybe even start a reciting plan with someone.
31. Whatever We have revealed to you (Muhammad) of the Book (the Qur’an), that is the Truth confirming that which is before it11. Allāh is All-Aware, Ever Seeing of His slaves (of mankind and jinn).
11. Of the Torah, the Psalms, the Gospel, etc.
When the Prophet (ﷺ) got up at night to offer the night prayer, he used to say: (O Allah! All the praises are for you, You are the Holder of the Heavens and the Earth, And whatever is in them. All the praises are for You; You have the possession of the Heavens and the Earth And whatever is in them. All the praises are for You; You are the Light of the Heavens and the Earth And all the praises are for You; You are the King of the Heavens and the Earth; And all the praises are for You; You are the Truth and Your Promise is the truth, And to meet You is true, Your Word is the truth And Paradise is true And Hell is true And all the Prophets (Peace be upon them) are true; And Muhammad is true, And the Day of Resurrection is true. O Allah ! I surrender (my will) to You; I believe in You and depend on You. And repent to You, And with Your help I argue (with my opponents, the non-believers) And I take You as a judge (to judge between us). Please forgive me my previous And future sins; And whatever I concealed or revealed And You are the One who make (some people) forward And (some) backward. There is none to be worshipped but you . There is neither might nor power except with Allah.
32. Then We caused to inherit the Book (the Qur’an) those whom We chose from among Our servants; of them is he who is unjust to himself12, and of them is he who is moderate13, and of them is he who excels through good deeds by the Permission of Allāh. This is the Great Bounty.
12. Who mixes good deeds with evil ones.
13. Who fulfills the minimum requirements and avoids the forbidden acts.
34. Saying: "(All) praise be to Allāh, Who has removed from us (all) grief14. Our Lord 'Allāh' is certainly All-Forgiving, Most Appreciative,"
14. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him, used to seek refuge in Allāh from grief, anxiety, sorrow, disability, laziness, cowardice, miserliness, the burdens of debt, and the repression of men. He also used to seek refuge in Allāh from doubt, associating partners with Allāh, bias, anger, injustice, jealousy, the ills of the heart, reaching the age of second childhood - senile old age, and the torment of the grave.
36. As for those who deny (the Truth), for them is the Fire of Gehinnom; where they will neither be finished off by death, nor will the torment thereof be lightened for them. Thus do We recompense every ungrateful one.
37. They will cry therein for help (saying): "(O Allāh) our Lord, take us out of here; we shall do righteous deeds other than those which we used to do. (They will be told): "Did We not grant you a life long enough, so that whosoever would receive admonition could receive it? And there came to you the warner (the prophet Muhammad); so taste (the result of your evil deeds); for the the unjust, there is no helper for them."
39. It is He 'Allāh' Who made you successors on earth. Whoever denies (the Truth), does so against his own self. The denial of the deniers will only increase the Anger of their 'real" Lord 'Allāh' and will only cause them greater loss.
40. Say: "Have you considered the idols which you worship besides Allāh? Show me what part of the earth they have created, or have they any share in the heavens? or have We given them a Book so that they follow a clear Proof from it? No, rather, the unjust (the pagans) promise one another nothing but delusion.
41. Allāh keeps the heavens and the earth from vanishing. If they were to vanish, there is none who can uphold them other than Him. He is Most Forbearing, Most Forgiving.
42. They swore by Allāh their most binding oaths, that if there came to them a warner they would be better guided than any of the (previous) nations. But when a warner (the Prophet Muhammad) came to them, it did not increase them except in aversion,
43. (Due to their) behaving arrogantly in the land and plotting evil; but the evil plot does not encompass any except the plotters. Then do they wait for anything except the fate of the former people? For you shall not find any change in Allah's way of dealing; and you shall not find any alteration in Allah's way of dealing.
44. Have they not traveled throughout the land to see what was the end of those before them - they were more powerful than them? Allāh is not such that anything in the heavens or in the earth escapes Him. He is ever All-Knowing, Most Powerful.
45. If Allāh were to punish the people for what they earn (of sins) immediately, He would not leave on the back of it (the earth) any living creature, but He grants them respite for an appointed term. When their appointed time comes, then Allāh is Ever-Seeing of His servants.
