وَءَاثَرَ ٱلۡحَيَوٰةَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا
38. And preferred the worldly life [14],
[14]. The Prophet Muhammad ﷺ said:
“By Allāh, the life of this world compared to the Hereafter is nothing more than like one of you dipping his finger into the sea — let him see what it brings back.”
The ocean represents the Hereafter — vast, endless, and beyond human comprehension.
The drop of water that clings to the finger is the worldly life — short, fleeting, and insignificant in comparison.
This vivid image urges believers to not be deceived by the temporary pleasures of this world, but to strive for what is eternal.
The pleasures and trials of this world, however long they last, are as nothing compared to the endless bliss or torment of the Hereafter.
