مَا كَانَ إِبۡرَٰهِيمُ يَهُودِيّٗا وَلَا نَصۡرَانِيّٗا وَلَٰكِن كَانَ حَنِيفٗا مُّسۡلِمٗا وَمَا كَانَ مِنَ ٱلۡمُشۡرِكِينَ

(67) Ibrāhīm was neither a Jew nor was he a Christian, but he was rightly oriented^[613], devoutly surrendered^[614] and was not among the Associators.

[613] Ḥanīf, is a very rich term but basically it means a pristine Believer. The basic semantic meaning of the root ḥ-n-f is inclination towards uprightness and eschewing crookedness.
