1. Alif Laam Ra¹. These are the Verses of the clear Book2.
1. The Qur’an is made up of such letters from the Arabic alphabet. The Arabs at the time of revelation were the unmatched masters of the Arabic language and yet when challenged were totally unable to bring anything like the Qur’an. Although these disjointed Arabic letters are referring to the inimitable nature of the Qur’an and its divine source, God knows best its meaning.
2. The clear Book is the Qur’an whose verses are clear with regards to its language and rulings, and all its meanings. A Book whose Truth is evident and which clears up that which is indefinite and inexact.
2. Indeed, We have revealed it a perfect Qur’an 'recitation' in Arabic, so that you may understand.
3. We relate to you 'Muhammad' the best of stories, by Our revealing to you this Qur’an, though before this you were totally unaware (of it).

4. (Mention) when Yusuf (Jospeh) said to his father: "O father, i saw eleven stars and the sun and the moon - I saw them prostrating to me."

5. (Jacob) said: "My son, do not relate your vision to your brothers, lest they plot against you. Indeed, Satan is an open enemy to man."
6. Thus will your Lord choose you, and teach you the interpretation of (events and) dreams and make His favor complete upon you and upon the family of Jacob, as He made it complete before on your fathers, Abraham and Isaac. Indeed, your Lord 'Allāh' is All-Knowing, All-Wise.

3. I.e., Judah.

24. She was determined to seduce him, and he (Joseph) would have yielded to her, were it not for his faith in His Lord 'Allāh' and the clear proof (of God's Monotheism and Promise) he had seen. Thus did We protect him from evil and indecency. He was truly one of Our sincere servants.

31. When she heard their gossiping, she invited them and prepared for them a banquet, and gave each of them a knife, and said (to Joseph): "Come out to them." So when they saw him, they were so amazed 'by his beauty', and cut their hands, and said: "Glory be to Allāh, this is not a mortal man, this is but a noble angel."
32. She said: "This is the one about whom you blamed me, and I indeed sought to seduce him, but he abstained. If he does not do what I order him with, he will surely be imprisoned, and make him disgraced."

33. (Joseph) said: "my Lord 'Allāh', prison is dearer to me than that to which they invite me. Unless You protect me from their guile, I shall be attracted to them, and become (one) of the ignorants."

36. Two young men entered the prison with him. One of them said: "I saw myself (in a dream) pressing wine." And the other said: "I saw myself (in a dream) carrying bread on my head of which birds ate." Inform us of its interpretation. We see you to be a good person.
37. (Joseph) said: "There will not come to you any food which you are given, but I can inform you of its kind before it comes to you." this is of what my Lord 'Allāh' has taught me10. I have forsaken the religion of a people who do not believe in Allāh, and they are deniers of the Hereafter:
10. As well as the interpretation of the dreams and events.
38. I follow (Islam) the faith of my fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. It is not proper for us to associate anything with Allāh11. This is Allah’s Favor upon us and on mankind12, but most people do not give thanks13.
11. Here is an explanation of the reason behind this great favour: by way of calling them to Islamic Monotheism.
12. The favour of guidance to worshipping none but Almighty Allāh without associating any partners with Him in worship.
13. That is, they are heedless of this great favour and do not believe and worship only Allāh and Him Alone.

40. You do not worship besides Him but (mere) names which you have named, you and your fathers; Allāh has not sent down any Authority for them. Judgment is only for Allāh; He has commanded that you shall not worship anything but Him13. This (Islam) is the only true religion, but most people do not know.
13. Peoples’ utter ignorance leads to associating partners with Allāh in worship.
41. My two jail mates, as for one of you, he will serve wine to his master; and as for the other, he will be crucified, and his head will be consumed by the birds - the matter is decreed about which you both inquire.

43. (After some time) the king said: "I saw (in a dream) seven fat cows which seven lean ones were eating; and of seven green ears of corn and (seven) dry ones: "O you notables, explain to me my dream, if you can interpret the dream."

44. They said: "Confused dreams, and we do not know the interpretation of such dreams14."
14. Joseph was able to interpret it correctly while all the notables failed to do so was of singular importance and effectively played into his coming to prominence. Allāh had prepared him all along for this.
45. The one of the two (prisoners) who had been spared, and (who suddenly) remembered (Joseph) after a long time, said: "I will inform you of its interpretation, so let me go."
