5. In the alternation of the night and day, and what Allāh sends down of provision from the sky 'the rain' to revive the barren earth after its death, and the directing of the winds², are signs for a people who reason.
2. I.e., sometimes towards the east or north, and sometimes towards the south or west, sometimes bringing glad tidings of rain etc., and sometimes bringing torment.
8. Who hears the Verses of Allāh recited to him, then persists 'in his' arrogance as though he had not heard them. Tell him that he will suffer a painful torment.
10. In front of them is Gehinnom 'Hell'. There will not benefit them anything of what they earned 'of worldly gains', nor 'the idols' they took for protectors besides Allāh. They will have a grievous torment.
12. It is Allāh Who subjected the sea for you so that ships sail on by His command and that you may seek His bounty, so that you may be grateful 'to Him'.
13. He 'also' subjected for you all that is in the heavens³ and all that is in the earth⁴, all, from Him5. There are certainly signs in this for a people who reflect.

4. of seas, rivers, trees, mountains, etc.
5. All this is for your benefit, so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory of Allāh.
14. Tell those who believe6 that they forgive those who do not fear Allah’s days 'of retribution'7, so that He may requite a people for what they done 'of sins'.
6. in Allāh and His messenger Muhammad.
7. Never avenge yourselves unless it is for the sake of Allāh and against violation of His Commands. If it is against yourself leave it to Allāh and never avenge yourself. Let no one deceive you with vain words to revert you back into non-Muslim manners, for because of the sins the Wrath of Allāh comes upon the sinners.
15. Whoever does what is right 'and just', it is good for himself. And whoever does evil, it is against himself. Then to 'Allāh' your Lord you will all be returned.
16. We gave the children of Israel the Scripture, judiciousness8, and Prophethood, and provided them with good things, and We preferred them above all people (of their time)9.
8. To guide people and judge among them.
9. By sending them many prophets from among the descendants of Abraham.
17. We also gave them clear Proofs in support of Islam (the true religion of God). Then they did not differ except after (Divine) knowledge had come to them, out of envy among themselves. Your Lord 'Allāh' will Judge between them on the Day of Resurrection about their differences.
18. Then We have established for you 'O Muhammad' a code of conduct of the same (religion of all the prophets - Islam), so follow it. And do not follow the low desires of those who do not know.
19. They will never avail you in the least against Allāh. The workers of iniquity are allies of one another, but Allāh is the Protector of the righteous.
21. Or do those who commit evil deeds think that We shall make them like those who believe and do good deeds - make them equal in their life and their death? Evil it is that they assume.
22. Allāh has created the heavens and the earth for a genuine purpose so that every soul may be duly recompensed for what it has done. They will no be treated unjustly.
23. Have you seen him who takes his lowly desires as his god? Allāh knowing 'him as such' left him astray, set a seal upon his hearing and heart and veiled his vision. Who can guide him after Allāh? Will you not then take heed?
24. The 'pagans' say: There is nothing but our life in this world, we live and die 'but once' and nothing causes us to perish but 'the passing of' time. They have no 'sure' knowledge about that10. They merely follow their conjectures.
10. The real nature and meaning of life and death, and the life to come.
25. When Our clear Verses 'of this Qur’an' are recited to them, their argument is no other than that they say: "Bring back to life our 'dead' fathers, if you are truthful."
26. Say, "It is Allāh Who gives you life and causes you to die. He will gather you together on the inevitable Day of Judgment but most people do not know."
27. To Allāh belongs the Kingdom of the heavens and the earth. On the Day when the Hour 'of Doom' will come to pass, that Day the followers of falsehood will lose.
28. You will see all the people kneeling down 'from fear'. Every community will be summoned to its record 'of deeds, 'and will be told': "Today you shall be recompensed for what you used to do 'of good or evil'."
31. But as for those who denied (the Truth, they will be asked): "Were not My verses 'of the Qur’an' recited to you? But you were arrogant, and sinful people.
32. When it was said that the Promise of Allāh is true and that the Hour would surely come. You said: "We do not know what the Hour 'of Doom' is; we assume only assumption, and we are not convinced.
34. They will be told: "This Day We shall forget you11 as you forgot the Encounter of this Day of yours. Your abode is the Hellfire, and there is none to help you;
35. This is because you took the Verses of Allāh 'this Qur’an' as jest, and worldly life deluded you." So this Day they will not be taken out 'of Hell', nor will they be allowed to appease 'Allāh'.
