15. Those of your women who commit adultery, call to witness against them four (witnesses) from among you. If they bear witness, confine them (i.e., the guilty women) to the houses until death takes them away, or Allāh sets a way (rule) for them4.
16. If any two of you commit fornication, punish them. If they repent and reform, leave them alone5. Indeed, Allāh is ever Accepting of Repentance, Most Merciful.
5. Shaming a sinner after they have repented is among the worst actions, as it might push them back into sin. Instead, encourage and support them, remembering that Allāh loves those who repent.
17. Allāh accepts only the repentance of those who do evil out of ignorance, then turn (repent to Allāh ) soon after, these it is to whom Allāh will turn to (in forgiveness). For Allāh is ever All-Knowing, All-Wise.
18. Repentance is not for those who insist in committing evil deeds, until when death comes to one of them, he says: "Now I repent;" nor (for) those who die while they are deniers (of the Truth). For these We have prepared a painful torment.
19. O believers, it is not lawful for you that you take women (as) heritage against (their) will6, nor to hinder them from marriage, in order to take back some of what you have given them, unless they commit a clear indecency.(Husbands love your wives and) treat them honorably. If you dislike them, then it may be that you dislike a thing which Allāh might yet make in it abundant good.
6. The reason behind this Verses' revelation had to do with pagan practice during the age of ignorance whereby: “When a man dies, his close male relatives claimed more of a right to his wife than her own family. If they wished, they could marry her ˹to one of them˺, or marry her off to anybody, or hold her back from marriage”. The fact of the matter is that these women hate what is being done to them and are forced into it, against their will.
