1. Glory be to (Allāh) Who took His servant¹ for a journey by night from the Sacred Mosque (in Makkah) to the farthest mosque (in Jerusalem), the precincts whereof We have blessed², so that We may show to him some of Our (Great) Signs. Surely He is the All-Hearing, the All-Seeing.
1. I.e., the Prophet Muhammad.
This verse is a prediction in Psalm 118 that came true many years later – exactly as predicted – when crowds of Prophets in Jerusalem welcomed Muhammad as the world’s Prophet and Messenger. King David, who was given the Psalms, expressed a prophecy Allah had given him about how the world’s prophet and messenger from God would enter Jerusalem. The Prophet Muhammad would be welcomed with open gates, as described in Psalm 118:19: “Open for me the gates of the righteous; I will enter and give thanks to Allah.” Finally, Psalm 118:26 describes how all the prophets would bless Muhammad, God's messenger to the world at his arrival: “Blessed is he who comes in the Name of Allah. From the house of Allah we bless you.” which Psalm 118 predicts in verses 21-23: “The stone the builders rejected has become the cornerstone." That is Prophet Muhammad.
The Sunnah narrates that the Prophet, on the Buraq (a heavenly steed), was taken on a journey from Mecca to Jerusalem. This journey, known as the Isra', is a key part of the story of the Night Journey.
Upon arriving in Jerusalem, the Prophet Muhammad prayed with prophets such as Moses, Abraham, and Jesus within the Masjid Al-Aqsa (the Farthest Mosque).
Gabriel led the Prophet Muhammad to the front, and the Prophet, in turn, led the other prophets in prayer.
After praying, the Prophet ascended into the heavens, where he met with Allah 'God' and experienced various spiritual realms.
2. And from there to the heavens.
2. And We gave Moses the Scripture and made it a guide for the children of Israel, 'saying': "Do not take other than Me as Disposer of 'your' affairs³."
3. A person is to entrust none of his affairs to any besides Allāh. One should always remember the command: “Put your trust in Allāh - sufficient is Allāh as a Trustee”.
4. And We decreed to the children of Israel in the Scripture: "That you will cause corruption in the land⁴ twice, and you will surely rise to (a degree of) extreme haughtiness."
4. Of Levant through disobedience, arrogance and transgression slaying the Prophets.
5. So when the promise of the first of the two came to pass, We raised against you bondmen of Ours of terrible might (in war)⁵, so they ravaged into the homes. It was a promise completely fulfilled⁶.
5. Goliath and his army.
6. At the hands of Assyrians and Babylonians.
7. "If you do well, you do well for your own selves, and if you do evil, then it is for it." When the last (second) promise came to pass⁷, (We raised your enemies) to sadden your faces and to enter the temple 'in Jerusalem' as they had entered it the first time, and to destroy whatever they gained ascendancy over, with utter destruction.
7. We raised new enemies i.e., Nebuchadnezzar and his army against you.
