Ajeti: 142

۞ سَيَقُولُ ٱلسُّفَهَآءُ مِنَ ٱلنَّاسِ مَا وَلَّىٰهُمۡ عَن قِبۡلَتِهِمُ ٱلَّتِي كَانُواْ عَلَيۡهَاۚ قُل لِّلَّهِ ٱلۡمَشۡرِقُ وَٱلۡمَغۡرِبُۚ يَهۡدِي مَن يَشَآءُ إِلَىٰ صِرَٰطٖ مُّسۡتَقِيمٖ

142. Fools among the people38 will soon say: "What has turned them (the Muslims) from their Qiblah (the prayer direction towards Jerusalem) which they used to face39? Say: "To Allāh alone belong the East and the West." He guides whom He wills to a Right Path.

38. Pagans, hypocrites, and the unbelieving Jews.
39. Prior to the command in the Verse 144, they had been facing Jerusalem to the north.

Ajeti: 143

وَكَذَٰلِكَ جَعَلۡنَٰكُمۡ أُمَّةٗ وَسَطٗا لِّتَكُونُواْ شُهَدَآءَ عَلَى ٱلنَّاسِ وَيَكُونَ ٱلرَّسُولُ عَلَيۡكُمۡ شَهِيدٗاۗ وَمَا جَعَلۡنَا ٱلۡقِبۡلَةَ ٱلَّتِي كُنتَ عَلَيۡهَآ إِلَّا لِنَعۡلَمَ مَن يَتَّبِعُ ٱلرَّسُولَ مِمَّن يَنقَلِبُ عَلَىٰ عَقِبَيۡهِۚ وَإِن كَانَتۡ لَكَبِيرَةً إِلَّا عَلَى ٱلَّذِينَ هَدَى ٱللَّهُۗ وَمَا كَانَ ٱللَّهُ لِيُضِيعَ إِيمَٰنَكُمۡۚ إِنَّ ٱللَّهَ بِٱلنَّاسِ لَرَءُوفٞ رَّحِيمٞ

143. Thus We have made you (Muslims) a medium (just and the best) nation40 that you be witness over the people and (that) the Messenger (Muhammad) be a witness over you. We did not make the Qiblah 'direction' which you had been facing, except that We might distinguish him who follows the messenger (Muhammad) from him who turns back upon his heels. And it was certainly a difficult test except for those whom Allāh guided. Never Allāh would make your faith (prayers) go to waste, for Allāh is Affectionate, Merciful to the people.

40. Between negligence and extremism.

Ajeti: 144

قَدۡ نَرَىٰ تَقَلُّبَ وَجۡهِكَ فِي ٱلسَّمَآءِۖ فَلَنُوَلِّيَنَّكَ قِبۡلَةٗ تَرۡضَىٰهَاۚ فَوَلِّ وَجۡهَكَ شَطۡرَ ٱلۡمَسۡجِدِ ٱلۡحَرَامِۚ وَحَيۡثُ مَا كُنتُمۡ فَوَلُّواْ وُجُوهَكُمۡ شَطۡرَهُۥۗ وَإِنَّ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ لَيَعۡلَمُونَ أَنَّهُ ٱلۡحَقُّ مِن رَّبِّهِمۡۗ وَمَا ٱللَّهُ بِغَٰفِلٍ عَمَّا يَعۡمَلُونَ

144. We see the turning of your face to the heaven41, so We shall turn you to a direction which you shall like. So turn your face towards the Sacred Mosque (in Makkah), and wherever you are, turn your faces towards it. And those who have been given the Scripture certainly know that it is the Truth from their Lord. Allāh is not unaware of what you do.

41. The Prophet Muhammad was awaiting the command to change the qiblah (the direction of the prayer); so he used to look up at the sky.

Ajeti: 145

وَلَئِنۡ أَتَيۡتَ ٱلَّذِينَ أُوتُواْ ٱلۡكِتَٰبَ بِكُلِّ ءَايَةٖ مَّا تَبِعُواْ قِبۡلَتَكَۚ وَمَآ أَنتَ بِتَابِعٖ قِبۡلَتَهُمۡۚ وَمَا بَعۡضُهُم بِتَابِعٖ قِبۡلَةَ بَعۡضٖۚ وَلَئِنِ ٱتَّبَعۡتَ أَهۡوَآءَهُم مِّنۢ بَعۡدِ مَا جَآءَكَ مِنَ ٱلۡعِلۡمِ إِنَّكَ إِذٗا لَّمِنَ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ

145. And even if you were to bring to those (Jews and Christians) who have been given the Scripture42 with every sign they would not follow your Qiblah, nor can you be a follower of their Qiblah. Neither are they43 the followers of each other’s Qiblah. If you follow their desires after the (Divine) Knowledge that has come to you, you are then certainly of the unjust.

42. Who persist in denying the Truth and are arrogant.
43. I.e., the Jews who face the temple mount, and the Christians who face towards the East.
