1. Alif Laam Ra¹. These are the Verses of the Book and a clear Recitation ².
1. The Qur’an is made up of such letters from the Arabic alphabet. The Arabs at the time of revelation were the unmatched masters of the Arabic language and yet when challenged were totally unable to bring anything like the Qur’an. Although these disjointed Arabic letters are referring to the inimitable nature of the Qur’an and its divine source, God knows best its meaning.
2. Both the Book and the Recitation mentioned here refer to one and the same thing, the Qur’an itself; the Book that was to be and then the present recited Verses. Its double mention, as given here, is meant to draw special attention to the evidences it provides to the Truthfulness of the Message.
3. Leave them alone to eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by (vain) hope⁴; for they will soon know (the Truth)⁵.
4. Vain hope of a long life, accomplishment of one’s aspirations, a peaceful life, a fortunate turn of events, etc., that makes one distracted from the real purpose of life and heedless to the Truth of Islam. One of the greatest reasons for which Allāh has created mankind – which is one of the greatest tests – is the command to affirm His Oneness and to worship Him alone with no partner and to believe in His last and final messenger, the Prophet Muhammad.
5. That there is no deity except Allāh and that Muḥammad is the messenger of God.
8. The dwellers of Paradise will be safe from all ills, away from troubles, and all matters that might put a dent in their happiness and sense of security.
52. When they entered upon him, they said: "Peace". Abraham said: "We are wary of you9."
9. Since they came at a time when guests were not usually expected, he doubted their motives and wanted them to assure him of peace, which they promptly did.
65. So leave 'the town' with your family sometime during the night and walk behind them, and let not any one of you look back.Proceed as you are commanded.
79. So We afflicted Our retribution on them. The ruins of both towns (of Sodom and Midian) still lie on a well-known road, plain for all to see (and take a lesson from).
85. We have not created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them except for a genuine purpose. And the Hour 'of Doom' is certainly coming. So be forgiving13 with gracious forgiveness.
13. Forgiving your enemies means showing kindness to those who oppose, mistreat, or harm you. It's a call to forgive without conditions, irrespective of how they treat you personally. This does not equate to pacifism, as Muslims are still expected to defend the innocent and speak the truth without hate. And that is why come after this in other chapters of the Qur’an the ordainment of Jihâd - fighting for God’s cause against the evil forces.
88. Do not yearn and extend your eyes towards what We have given certain classes of them (the deniers) to enjoy, nor grieve over them, but lower your wing (in love and kindness) to the believers.
14. I.e., the Jews and the Christians who separated from the teachings of their Prophets. In some parts of their scriptures they believed and in some they disbelieved, and they changed others, and divided themselves into many differing sects.
99. And worship your Lord 'Allāh alone', until there comes to you the certainty 'of death'16.
16. Following the Qur’an and the Sunnah 'teachings of Prophet Muhammad', to the very end of our lives is the right way for everyone to close the final chapter of his life's book and finish well. Good end and gracefully living with life's changes testifies to the reality of Islam, our true faith. It leaves for those who remain a legacy of inspiring memories of worshipping Allāh alone without associating any partners with Him in worship and taking as living example His last and final messenger, the Prophet Muhammad.
