الٓرۚ تِلۡكَ ءَايَٰتُ ٱلۡكِتَٰبِ وَقُرۡءَانٖ مُّبِينٖ

1. Alif Laam Ra [1]. These are the Verses of the Book and a clear Recitation [2]. info

[1]. See footnote to Qur’an chapter2: Verse1.
[2]. Both the Book and the Recitation mentioned here refer to one and the same thing, the Qur’an itself; the Book that was to be and then the present recited Verses. Its double mention, as given here, is meant to draw special attention to the evidences it provides to the Truthfulness of the Message.

2 : 15

رُّبَمَا يَوَدُّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ لَوۡ كَانُواْ مُسۡلِمِينَ

2. Perhaps those who disbelieved [3] will wish that they had been Muslims [submitters to the Will of God]. info

[3]. "Those who disbelieved” — specifically those who denied the truth after it was made clear to them.

3 : 15

ذَرۡهُمۡ يَأۡكُلُواْ وَيَتَمَتَّعُواْ وَيُلۡهِهِمُ ٱلۡأَمَلُۖ فَسَوۡفَ يَعۡلَمُونَ

3. Leave them to eat and enjoy themselves, and be deluded by [false] hope [4] - for soon they will come to know [the Truth] [5]. info

[4]. Vain hope of a long life, accomplishment of one’s aspirations, a peaceful life, a fortunate turn of events, etc., that makes one distracted from the real purpose of life and heedless to the Truth of Islam. One of the greatest reasons for which Allāh has created mankind – which is one of the greatest tests – is the command to affirm His Oneness and to worship Him alone without partners.
[5]. That there is no deity except Allāh and that Muḥammad is the messenger of God.

4 : 15

وَمَآ أَهۡلَكۡنَا مِن قَرۡيَةٍ إِلَّا وَلَهَا كِتَابٞ مَّعۡلُومٞ

4. Never did We destroy any town [for its sins] except that it had a known, prescribed Decree. info

مَّا تَسۡبِقُ مِنۡ أُمَّةٍ أَجَلَهَا وَمَا يَسۡتَـٔۡخِرُونَ

5. No nation can advance its term, nor can they postpone it. info

وَقَالُواْ يَٰٓأَيُّهَا ٱلَّذِي نُزِّلَ عَلَيۡهِ ٱلذِّكۡرُ إِنَّكَ لَمَجۡنُونٞ

6. And they said, “O you to whom the Reminder has been sent down — you are certainly insane.” info

لَّوۡمَا تَأۡتِينَا بِٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةِ إِن كُنتَ مِنَ ٱلصَّٰدِقِينَ

7. 'Why do you not bring us the angels, if you are of the truthful ones?" info

8 : 15

مَا نُنَزِّلُ ٱلۡمَلَٰٓئِكَةَ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَمَا كَانُوٓاْ إِذٗا مُّنظَرِينَ

8. We do not send down the angels except with Truth [6], and they [the disbelievers] would not then be reprieved.  info

[6]. Revelation or Divine Retribution.

9 : 15

إِنَّا نَحۡنُ نَزَّلۡنَا ٱلذِّكۡرَ وَإِنَّا لَهُۥ لَحَٰفِظُونَ

9. Indeed, it is We who have sent down the Reminder [the Qur’an], and We will surely preserve it [from distortion and alteration]. info

10 : 15

وَلَقَدۡ أَرۡسَلۡنَا مِن قَبۡلِكَ فِي شِيَعِ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ

10. We certainly sent [messengers] before you among the sects of the former people. info

وَمَا يَأۡتِيهِم مِّن رَّسُولٍ إِلَّا كَانُواْ بِهِۦ يَسۡتَهۡزِءُونَ

11. No messenger would come to them, but they used to mock at him. info

كَذَٰلِكَ نَسۡلُكُهُۥ فِي قُلُوبِ ٱلۡمُجۡرِمِينَ

12. Thus do We cause it [disbelief and denial] to enter into the hearts of the guilty; info

لَا يُؤۡمِنُونَ بِهِۦ وَقَدۡ خَلَتۡ سُنَّةُ ٱلۡأَوَّلِينَ

13. They do not believe in it [the Qur’an], though the example of [God’s dealing with] the former peoples has already passed. info

وَلَوۡ فَتَحۡنَا عَلَيۡهِم بَابٗا مِّنَ ٱلسَّمَآءِ فَظَلُّواْ فِيهِ يَعۡرُجُونَ

14. Even if We were to open for them a gateway from heaven, and they continued therein to ascend, info

لَقَالُوٓاْ إِنَّمَا سُكِّرَتۡ أَبۡصَٰرُنَا بَلۡ نَحۡنُ قَوۡمٞ مَّسۡحُورُونَ

15. They would [certainly] say, “Our eyes have only been dazzled; rather, we are a people bewitched.” info
