159. So it is due to Mercy from Allāh that you (Muhammad) deal with them gently. Had you been harsh, hard-hearted, they would certainly have dispersed from around you. So pardon them and ask forgiveness for them, and take counsel with them in important matters; so once you have taken a decision, place your (complete) trust in Allāh. Indeed, Allāh loves those who are reliant on Him.
160. If Allāh helps you (o believers), there is none that can overcome you. However, if He forsakes you, who is there then that can help you after Him? On Allāh 'alone' should the believers rely.
161. It is not appropriate for a prophet to defraud56; and whoever misappropriates 'something' shall come with what he took on the Day of Resurrection57. Then every soul shall be requited fully what it has earned (of good or bad), and they will not be dealt with unjustly.
56. Whether war booty, public or private funds; and that is to stealthily, illegally seize possession of something; in this instance, spoils of war in particular.
57. Muhammad, God's Messenger said, "Whosoever among you is appointed by us in a position and he conceals from us even a needle or less, it will amount to misappropriation and he wil be called upon to restore it on the Day of Resurrection. A black man from the Ansar stood up I can see him still - and said: "O Messenger of God, take back from me your assignment." He (the Prophet) said, "What has happened to you?" The man replied: "I have heard you saying such and such.'He said, I say that even now. Whoever of you is appointed by us to a position, he should render an account of everything, big or small, and whatever he is given therefrom, he should take and he should desist from taking what is unlawful". Here functionaries of government are warned to perform their duties with co-operation and integrity. If they neglect their duties or take undue advantage of their official position, they will be held guilty by Allah for dereliction of their duties and misuse of power. It also tells us that it is the duty of the superior officers to keep a strict watch on their subordinates and not to let them indulge in pribery and abuse; otherwise, their negligence or slackness or overlooking or shirking from their duty in this behalf will also be treated as crime. It is not difficult to imagine the fate of such officers who conspire in the loot and plunder as is the case in many societies today.
Prophet Muhammad said: “By Allāh none of you misappropriates part of it ˹collected mandatory alms, public funds, or war booty˺ without him meeting Allāh on the Day of Judgement carrying it. And I shall know everyone of you who meets Allāh carrying a camel grunting, a cow lowing or a goat bleating...”
162. Is he who follows the Pleasure of Allāh like him who has drawn upon himself Allah’s Wrath, and whose abode is Gehinnom (Hell)? What a terrible destination.
164. Allāh has certainly conferred a great Favor upon the believers when He raised among them a messenger 'Muhammad' from among themselves, reciting to them His verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book (Qur’an) and Wisdom. Though before this they were certainly in manifest error58.
58. Know that our first obligation is knowing that there is no true deity except Allāh. He is the Alpha and the Omega, the first and the last. He is the singlemost without any second. He is the Creator of the heavens and earth and whatever is in them and between them and He is the Subtle, the Aware, and has power over all things. Then the second most important thing is to belief in the Prophet Muhammad and acknowledgment that Allāh sent him to all of humanity as a bearer of glad tidings, a warner, a caller (of people) to God by His permission and an illuminating torch of light.
165. Why (is it that) when a calamity befell you, and you had certainly afflicted (the unbelievers) with twice as much, you began to say: "From where is this (misfortune)?" Say: "It is from yourselves." Indeed, Allāh has full Power over all things.
