159. So it is due to Mercy from Allāh that you [Muhammad] deal with them gently. Had you been stern and hard-hearted, they would certainly have dispersed from around you.

161. It is not possible for a prophet to defraud [57]; and whoever defrauds [something] shall come with what he took on the Day of Resurrection [58]. Then every soul shall be paid fully what it has done, and they will not be wronged. info

[57]. Whether it be war booty, public funds, or private property, ghulūl refers to the unlawful, stealthy seizure of something. In this verse, the reference is specifically to spoils of war.
[58]. Muhammad, the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ said: “Whoever among you is appointed by us to a position and conceals from us even a needle or less, it will amount to misappropriation, and he will be called to restore it on the Day of Resurrection.”
A man from the Anṣār—described as dark-skinned—stood up and said: “O Messenger of Allāh, take back your assignment from me.” The Prophet ﷺ asked: “What is the matter with you?” The man replied: “I heard you say such-and-such.”
The Prophet ﷺ said: “And I say that even now: whoever of you is entrusted with a position must render an account of everything, big or small. Whatever is given to him lawfully, he may take. But he must abstain from taking what is unlawful.”
This hadith is a stern warning to all those entrusted with public responsibility. Government officials and functionaries are commanded to perform their duties with honesty and integrity. If they neglect their responsibilities, exploit their positions, or abuse their authority for personal gain, they will be held accountable before Allāh for betrayal and corruption. Moreover, it is the duty of leaders and superiors to keep strict oversight over their subordinates. If they allow bribery, negligence, or abuse of power to persist, their complicity will also be considered a crime. One can only imagine the fate of officials who conspire in plunder and corruption, as is tragically common in many societies today.
The Prophet ﷺ also said: “By Allāh, none of you misappropriates anything—whether from zakāh, public funds, or war booty—without meeting Allāh on the Day of Judgment carrying it on his neck. I will recognize each of you: one carrying a camel groaning, another with a cow lowing, or a goat bleating...”

164. Indeed, Allāh has bestowed a great Favor upon the believers when He raised among them a messenger [Muhammad] from themselves, reciting to them His verses, purifying them, and teaching them the Book [Qur’an] and Wisdom - though before this they were certainly in manifest error [59]. info

[59]. The first and foremost obligation is to know with certainty that there is no true deity except Allāh. He is the First and the Last, the Alpha and the Omega. He is One without partner, the Creator of the heavens, the earth, and all that lies within and between them. He is the Subtle, the All-Aware, and He has power over all things.
The second obligation is to believe in the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ, and to affirm that Allāh sent him to all of humanity as a bringer of glad tidings, a warner, a caller to God by His permission, and a radiant lamp of guidance.
