Al-‘Ankabūt

1. Alif Laam Meem¹.
1. See footnote to Qur’an chapter2: Verse1.
2. Do the people think that they will be left to say, "We believe"2 and they will not be tested?
2. As to their truthfulness to this statement of theirs that there is no god but Allāh and that Muhammad is His servant and messenger. The testing of our faith is for our benefit. Consider it pure joy and cause of thanksgiving to God, whenever you face trials, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. We sometimes fail to consider the connection between suffering and spiritual growth. Our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. This is not the only place where the Qur’an states that our difficulties are actually beneficial for us. Suffering produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.
3. We have certainly tested those before them, so Allāh will surely make evident those who are truthful, and He will surely make evident the liars.
4. Or do those who do bad deeds think they can outrun Us? Evil is what they judge.
5. Whoever hopes for the Meeting with Allāh³, then the term appointed by Allāh is surely coming (so let him prepare for it). And He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
3. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him, said: “Allāh Almighty says: Whoever comes with a good deed will have the reward of ten like it and even more. And whoever comes with an evil deed will be recompensed for one evil deed like it or he will be forgiven. Whoever draws close to Me by the length of a hand, I will draw close to him by the length of an arm. And whoever draws close to Me by the length of an arm, I will draw close to him by the length of a fathom. Whoever comes to Me walking, I will come to him running. For whoever meets Me with enough sins to fill the earth, not associating any partners with Me, I will meet him with as much forgiveness.”
If we seek Allāh first, then all the things we need will be added to us. When we make Allāh first in life, we see Him working through all circumstances and events for our good. Whether you are just beginning to seek out Allāh or you have been a Muslim for years, we should never stop seeking to know Allāh better.
6. And whoever strives, he strives hard only for his own good. Indeed, Allāh is surely in no need of all creations⁴.
4. Allāh is One who does not need us at all. He exists independent of the world, as one who is Self-Sufficient and Self-Existent. But having said that, it is true that Allāh loves us. It is true that He longs for good relationship with us.
7. As for those who believe⁵ and do good deeds, We shall remove from them their evil deeds, and reward them according to the best of what they used to do.
5. In the Oneness of Allāh (Islamic Monotheism) and in the Messenger Muhammad, and do not give up their faith for the harm they get from the pagans and unbelievers.
8. We have enjoined on man to (honor and) be good to his parents6." But If they strive to make you associate 'others' with Me, of which you have no 'Divine' knowledge, do not obey them. to Me is your return, and I shall inform you of what you used to do.
6. Children, obey your parents in everything that not contradicts with the teachings of Islam, for this pleases Allāh. Repeatedly Allāh commands children to honor their parents with loving hearts of obedience.  Children who demean or belittle their parents' leadership and decision making are clearly on a path to destruction. For Allāh commanded, ‘Honor your father and your mother that it may go well with you and that you may be blessed'.
9. Those who believe and do righteous deeds, We shall certainly admit them among the righteous (in Paradise).
10. Among the people is he who says: "We believe in Allāh." But when he is persecuted in (the Way of) Allāh, he makes the persecution (at the hands) of people as equal to the torment of Allāh. And if there comes help from your Lord (Allāh), they (the hypocrites) would surely say: "We were with you." Is not Allāh most knowing of what is in the chests of the worlds (mankind and Jinn)?
11. And Allāh will surely make evident those who believe, and He will surely make evident the hypocrites⁷.
7. I.e., Allāh test the people with good and hard days to distinguish the good from the wicked, although Allâh knows all that before putting them to test.
12. And those who disbelieve (in the Truth) say to those who believe: Follow our path and we do bear (the consequences of) your sins. But they are not going to bear anything of their sins. Indeed, they are surely liars.
13. And they will certainly bear their own burdens (sins), and other burdens⁸ with their own burdens, and they will certainly be questioned on the Day of Resurrection about what they used to invent (of lies).
8. Of the people they misled, although it will not lessen the burden of the latter in any way.
14. And indeed, We sent Noah to his people, so he remained among them for a thousand years, less fifty. Then the flood overtook them, while they were unjust⁹.
9. Insisting in associating others with Allāh in worship.
15. So We delivered him and those in the ark, and made it a Sign (and lesson) to all the nations.
16. And (We also sent) Abraham when he said to his people: "Worship Allāh alone and be mindful of Him; this is best for you, if only you knew."
17. You only worship idols (graven images) instead of Allāh, and you create falsehood. Indeed, those whom you worship besides Allāh do not possess for you any provision, so seek from Allāh the provision, worship Him alone, and be grateful to Him. To Him you shall (all) be returned.
18. And if you deny (Our message), then many (wicked) nations before you have also denied¹⁰. And nothing is incumbent on the messenger but a plain delivering (of the Message).
10. If the wicked are ruling the nation, sin will be everywhere, but those who live righteously will win in the end. If a nation is not guided by Allāh, the people will lose self-control and follow self-indulgence which is satisfying their own sinful desires, lusts, and pleasures, but the nation that obeys Allah’s laws will be happy.
19. Have they not considered how Allāh begins the creation, then He resurrects it¹¹? Indeed, This is too easy for Allāh.
11. I.e., raises it to life again for Judgment.
20. Say: "Travel throughout the land and see how He began the creation, then Allāh will produce the latter creation. Indeed, Allāh is able to do all things."
21. He chastises (justly) whom He wills and has Mercy on whom He wills (out of His grace), and to Him you shall (all) be returned back (for Judgment).
22. And you cannot escape Him on earth or in heaven. Nor have you any protector or helper besides Allāh.
23. As for those who disbelieve in the Signs of Allāh and His meeting, those they have despaired of My mercy, and those they will have a painful torment.
24. So the answer of his people was not except that they said: "Kill him or burn him." Then Allāh delivered him from the fire. In this there are certainly signs for a people who believe.
25. And (Abraham) said 'to his people': "Indeed, you only have taken (for worship) idols (graven images) instead of Allāh, out of mutual love between yourselves in this worldly life¹², then on the Day of Resurrection you will deny one another, curse one another, your abode is the eternal Fire, and you shall not have any helpers (intercessors)."
12. Worshipping an idol in every people was the secret of unity between them and for every people there was a chosen idol. Worshipping idols also had created a relation between them and their ancestors and they often pretended by the same pretext that those things were the traces of their ancestors which they followed. Besides, the chiefs of the pagans invited their followers to worship idols and this was a ring of join between ‘the chiefs’ and their ‘followers’. But on the Day of the Resurrection, all these chaffy and rotten links will be broken, and everyone puts its sin on another one’s shoulder while he curses him and repudiates the deed of the other.
26. So Lot believed for him, and (Abraham) said: "I am emigrating to (Allāh) my Lord, for surely He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise."
27. And We granted to him Isaac and Jacob, and placed in his descendants the Prophethood and the Scripture, and We gave him his reward in this world. And indeed, in the Hereafter he is surely of the righteous.
28. And (mention) Lot, when he said to his people, "Indeed, You are committing such indecency (homosexual acts) which no one have ever done so before you of the nations."
29. Indeed, you (sexually) approach men, cut off the way¹³, and commit detestable acts in your councils? But nothing was the answer of his people except that they said: "Bring on us Allah’s torment, if you are of the truthful."
13. I.e., commit highway robbery and aggression against travelers. Another meaning cut off the offspring by approaching the men as wives and leaving the women.
30. (Lot) said: "My Lord (Allah), help me against the corrupting people."
31. And when Our (angelic) messengers came to Abraham with the good news (of the birth of Isaac), they said: "We are certainly going to destroy the people of this town. Indeed, its people are evildoers."
32. He said: "Indeed, Lot is in it (that town)." They said: "We know well who is in it. We shall deliver him and his family, except his wife; she will be of those who will remain behind (to perish)."
33. And when Our (angelic) messengers came to Lot, he was distressed for them and felt straitened (by their arrival). But they said: "Fear not¹⁴, nor grieve; we shall certainly deliver you and your family, except your wife; she will be of those who remain behind (to perish)."
14. Allah’s precious people are commanded not to be afraid: “Fear not, for I will save you. Do not be afraid, for I am with you”. The pattern of “fear not . . . for” followed by a Divine action is consistently repeated in the Qur’an when Allāh instructs His people not to be afraid. Allah’s presence restrains fear. How reassuring to know that regardless of where life leads us, we need not fear. Even though you walk through the darkest valley, fear no evil, for Allāh is with you.
34. Indeed, We will bring down upon the people of this town a scourge from the sky for they have been defiantly disobedient
35. And indeed We have left thereof a clear Sign (the remains of its ruins) - for a people who understand.
36. And to (the people of) Midian (We sent) their brother Shu’aib, so he said: "My people, worship Allāh alone and hope 'for the reward of' the Last Day, and do not go about in the land, spreading corruption."
37. But they denied him (Shuaib), so seized them the earthquake, and they became within their home (corpses) fallen prone.
38. And ‘Aad and Thamud (We destroyed them also), and (their fate) is already evident to you from their (ruined) dwellings. And Satan made their deeds fair-seeming to them, so he kept them back from the (right) Path (of Islam), and they were endowed with perception.
39. And Korah, Pharaoh and Haman; and certainly Moses came to them with clear Signs, but they were puffed-up with pride in the land¹⁵, but they were not outrunners (from Our punishment).
15. Your pride will bring you down. Humility will bring you honor.
40. So each of them We seized for their sin. Then of them was he who, We sent on him a violent storm, and of them was he who seized him the awful cry and of them was he who, We caused to swallow him the earth¹⁸ and of them was he who, We drowned¹⁹. And it was not Allāh to do injustice to them, but they were unjust to their own selves.
16. i.e., Lot’s people.
17. Thamud and the people of Shuaib.
18. i.e., Korah.
19. the people of Noah and Pharoah.
41. The example of those who take protectors (lords, saviors) other than Allāh is like the spider who takes for itself a home (mesh). And indeed, the frailest of homes is the spider’s home (mesh) - if only they knew.
42. Surely Allāh knows that whatever (gods) they invoke besides Him are nothing. For He is the All-Mighty, the All-Wise.
43. And these examples, We present to the people, and none will understand them but the learned ones.
44. Allāh created the heavens and the earth for a truth (genuine purpose). There is certainly a Sign in this for the believers.
45. Recite that which has been revealed to you of the Book 'the Qur’an'20 and keep up the prayer. Indeed, the prayer keeps one away from indecency and sin21. And the Remembrance of Allāh22 is greater. For Allāh knows what you do.
20. Get the Qur’an and read it. It is the Word of God, so you can't really go wrong there. Read the Qur’an to be wise, believe it to be safe, and practice it to be righteous. The Qur'an is light to direct you, spiritual food to support you and comfort to strength you. Pray ib any nearby mosque and attend the congregational prayer there with the Muslims whom submit themselves to God.
21. Through prayer, we can overcome temptations to sin. Pray for Allah’s help to keep you from making wrong choices. This will give you the strength to do what is right.
22. Remembrance of Allāh (Adhikr) is one of the greatest forms of worship in Islam. It involves the use of the heart, tongue (or both) to praise Allāh, seek forgiveness or produce any form of righteous deed leading to reward. Although it appears simple to do, yet powerful to gain a high rank in the sight of the almighty! For example, a two-word dhikr can massively increase the scale of righteous deeds of a believer and lead him to Jannah, as reported by a narration from Muhammad, God’s messenger ﷺ; “Two words that are light on the tongue and heavy in the balance and beloved to the Most Merciful: Subhaanallaah wabihamdihi Subhaanallaah il-‘Azeem”.
46. Do not argue with the followers of the 'past' Scripture (Jews and Christians) except in the best manner, except those among them that work iniquity, and say: "We believe in that which has been sent down to us (of revelation) and sent down to you, and our God and your God is One (i.e.,
Allāh), and to Him 'alone' we submit as Muslims23.
23. Mohammad, God's messenger (ﷺ) said: "By Allāh in Whose Hand my soul is. You will not enter Paradise until you believe (and submit to God), and you will not believe until you love one another".
And this is love: that we walk in obedience to Allah’s Commandments. His command is that you worship none but Him and believe in His messenger, the Prophet Muhammad and follow him, and that you walk in brotherhood and love with one another.
47. Thus We have sent down to you the Book (the Qur’an). So those (who are firm in knowledge) whom We have given them the Scripture before believe in it24, and also of these (pagans) there are those (wise people) who believed in it. None reject in Our verses (of the Qur’an) except the deniers.
24. For they find the description of the Qur’an and the Prophet Muhammad in the bible.
48. Never did you (Muhammad) recite any Scripture before it (the Qur’an), nor did you write one with your right hand, then the falsifiers would have had cause for doubt.
49. Rather, it (the Qur’an) is clear Verses in the hearts of those who are granted 'right' knowledge. And none reject Our Revelations except the unjust.
50. And they said: "Why are not miracles sent down upon him from his Lord (Allāh)?" Say: "The miracles are only with Allāh, and I am only a plain warner."
51. Is it not enough for them that We have sent down to you (Muhammad) the Book (the Qur’an) which is recited to them? Indeed, there is Mercy in this and a Remembrance for a people who believe25.
25. Muhammad, God's messenger ﷺ said: "Not to wish to be the like of except two men: A man whom Allāh has taught the Qur’ân and he recites it during some hours of the night and during some hours of the day, and his neighbour listens to him and says: ‘I wish I had been given what has been given to so-and-so, so that I might do what he does;’ and a man whom Allāh has given wealth and he spends it (according to what Allāh has ordained) in a just and right manner, whereupon another man may say: ‘I wish I had been given what so-and-so has been given, for then I would do what he does.’"
52. Say: "Allāh is Enough as a Witness between me and you." He knows what is in the heavens and the earth. But those who believe in falsehood and disbelieve in Allāh - it is they who are the losers."
53. And they ask you to hasten on the torment. Had not a term been appointed, the torment would already have come to them. And It will certainly come to them all of a sudden while they do not perceive.
54. They ask you to hasten on the torment. But Gehinnom 'Hell' will surely encompass the deniers.
55. On the Day when the torment will cover them from above them, and from under their feet; and He will say: "Taste what you used to do (of evil)."
56. O my (believing) servants, My earth is indeed vast, so worship only Me and Me alone.
57. Every soul will taste the agony of death, then to Us you will (all) be returned.
58. As for those who believe and do righteous deeds, We will surely house to them of Paradise (elevated) chambers under which rivers flow, flow, abiding therein forever. How excellent is the reward of the workers (of good):
59. Those who are patient, and on their Lord 'Allāh alone' do they rely and trust.
60. And how many a creature carries not its own sustenance. Allāh provides for it and for you; for He is the All-Hearing, the All-Knowing.
61. And if you ask them: "Who created the heavens and the earth, and has subjected the sun and the moon?" They will certainly say: "Allāh." How are they then turned away (from the Truth)?
62. Allāh extends the provision for whom He wills of His servants or restricts for him. Indeed, Allāh has perfect Knowledge of all things.
63. And if you ask them: "Who is it that has been sending down water from the sky, then revives therewith the earth after its death;" they will say, "Allāh." Say: "All praise be to Allāh." But most of them do not understand.
64. And the life of this world is nothing but amused and a play. And the home of the Hereafter, that is surely the (eternal) life - if they only knew.
65. So when they ride in the ships (and find themselves in danger) they call upon Allāh (alone), being sincere to Him in devotion, but when He brings them safe to the land, at once they associate others with Him.
66. So that they will deny what We have given them, and let them enjoy themselves (for a while); so they will soon come to know (the result of this behavior).
67. Have they not seen that We have made a safe sanctuary (i e., Makkah), while the people are snatched away26 from all around them? Will they stil believe in falsehood, and deny Allah’s Grace?
26. i.e., killed and taken captives
68. And who is more unjust than one who invents a lie against Allāh, or rejects the Truth when it has come to him? Is not Hell the 'fitting' Home for all the deniers?
69. As for those who strive hard in Our cause, We shall certainly guide them to Our Ways (of peace and salvation)27. And indeed Allāh is with the good-doers.
27. The various ways and means to attain the acceptance and Pleasure of Allāh.
