100. As for the earliest forerunners (in the faith) of the emigrants29 and the helpers30, and those who nobly followed them, Allāh is pleased with them and they are pleased with Him. He has prepared for them Gardens under which rivers flow, to abide therein forever. This is the supreme triumph.
29. from Makkah to Madinah, for the sake of their religion.
30. From Madinah, who helped and gave aid to the Prophet and those who emigrated.
101. Among those who are around you (O Prophet) of the dwellers of the desert there are hypocrites, and among the people of Medina (also); there are some who persist in (their) hypocrisy; you do not know them, but We know them. We shall chastise them twice (in this world and in their graves), then they will be turned back to a tremendous torment (of Hell in the Hereafter).
102. There are others who admitted their sins, they have mixed a good deed with bad one; it may be that Allāh will return to them in repentance. Indeed, Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
103. Collect alms (Zakat) from their wealth to cleanse them thereby (of their sins) and cause them to grow in purity 31 and pray for them - indeed your prayer is a source of comfort for them. Allāh is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
31. I.e., to increase their wealth, good manners, pious deeds, and reward them both in this world and in the Hereafter.
104. Do they not know that Allāh accepts the repentance from His servants and takes the charities32, and that Allāh is the Accepter of Repentance, the Most Merciful.
32. That they give in good causes, seeking His face.
105. Say: Do (good deeds), Allāh will see your deeds33, and 'so will' His messenger and the believers; then you will be returned to (Allāh) the Knower of the unseen and the seen, and He will inform you of what you used to do.
33. Now that they have been given a new lease of life with the gracious acceptance of their repentance, they are to show their true mettle and make up for the chances of getting rewards for good deeds they had wasted. By working hard they should help the Cause of Allāh and the needy and remember always that It is more blessed to give than to receive.
Muhammad, God's Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “The upper hand is better than the lower hand. The upper hand is one that gives and the lower hand is one that receives. Begin (charity) with those who are under your care; and the best charity is that which given out of surplus; and he who asks (Allah) to help him abstain from the unlawful and the forbidden, Allah will fulfill his wish; and he who seeks self-sufficiency will be made self-sufficient by Allah".
106. And34 (there are yet) others (whose cases are) deferred for Allah’s Command; He will either chastise them or turn to them in repentance - for Allāh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
