Al-Hijr

1. Alif Laam Ra¹. These are the Verses of the Book and a clear Recitation ².
1. See footnote to Qur’an chapter2: Verse1.
2. Both the Book and the Recitation mentioned here refer to one and the same thing, the Qur’an itself; the Book that was to be and then the present recited Verses. Its double mention, as given here, is meant to draw special attention to the evidences it provides to the Truthfulness of the Message.
2. Perhaps will wish those who disbelieved (in the truth) that they had been Muslims (those who submit themselves to God)3.
3. On the Day of Judgement or at the time of their death.
3. Leave them to eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by (vain) hope⁴; for they will soon know (the Truth)⁵.
4. Vain hope of a long life, accomplishment of one’s aspirations, a peaceful life, a fortunate turn of events, etc., that makes one distracted from the real purpose of life and heedless to the Truth of Islam. One of the greatest reasons for which Allāh has created mankind – which is one of the greatest tests – is the command to affirm His Oneness and to worship Him alone without partners.
5. That there is no deity except Allāh and that Muḥammad is the messenger of God.
4. Never did We destroy any of the town (for its sins) except that it had a known (prescribed) Decree.
5. No nation will precede its term, nor will they (be able) to postpone it.
6. And they (the deniers) said: "O you (Muhammad) to whom the Reminder (the Qur’an) has been revealed. You are certainly insane."
7. 'Why do you not bring us the angels, if you are of the truthful ones?"
8. We do not send down the angels except with Truth6, and in that case, they (the deniers) had not been respited.
6. Revelation or Divine Retribution.
9. Indeed, it is We who revealed the Reminder 'Qur’an', and for it We are certainly Preservers.
10. We certainly sent (messengers) before you among the sects of the former people.
11. And no messenger would come to them, but they used to mock at him.
12. Thus do We cause it (disbelief) to traverse into the hearts of the guilty;
13. They do not believe in it (this Qur’an), and indeed the example of the (destroyed) former (unbelievers) has already passed.
14. Even if We open to them a gateway of heaven, and) so they continued to ascend, through it,
15. They would certainly say: "Our eyes have only been dazzled, rather, we are a people bewitched."
16. We have set up constellations in the heaven, and We adorned it for the beholders.
17. And We preserved it from every outcast devil,
18. Except him (devil) who (tries to) eavesdrop (to the near heaven), and so an evidently flaming (meteor) follows him up.
19. And the earth-We have extended it, and cast on it firm mountains, and [We] caused to grow therein of every thing well- balanced.
20. And We have made for you therein means of living and for those for whom you are not providers.
21. And there is not a thing but with Us are its treasures, and We do not send it down except in a known measure.
22. We send the winds fertilizing, then send down water from the sky, so We give it to you to drink of, And you are not its storers.
23. And indeed, it is We who give life and cause death, and We are the 'sole' Inheritor.
24. And certainly, We knew those who precede among you, and certainly, We knew those who come later.
25. Indeed, your Lord (Allāh), He it is who will gather them (for Judgment). Surely, He is Wise, Knowing.
26. We have certainly created man out of sounding clay of mud altered into shape.
27. And the jinn (Satan) We created before from the fire of the scorching winds.
28. (Mention) when your Lord (Allāh) said to the angels: "I will create a mortal man out of sounding clay of mud altered into shape.
29. So when I have made him complete and breathed into him of My (created) soul, fall down in prostration to him."
30. So the angels prostrated - all of them together,
31. Except Iblees (Satan); he refused to be with the prostrators.
32. 'Allāh' said: "O Iblees (Satan), what is the matter with you that you are not with the prostrators?"
33. (Satan) said: "It is not for me to prostrate to a mortal man whom you have created out of sounding clay of mud altered into shape."
34. (Allāh) said: "Then get out of it (the Garden), for you are outcast;
35. And indeed, upon you is the curse until the Day of Recompense."
36. (Satan) said: "My Lord, then grant me respite until the Day they are resurrected."
37. (Allāh) said: "Then indeed, you are of the respited."
38. Until the Day of the appointed time known (to Me alone i.e., the Day of Judgment).
39. (Satan) said: "My Lord, because You have misled me, I will certainly adorn for them on the earth7, and I will cause them all to deviate,
7. The path of error, worldly distractions, desires and evil.
40. Excepting Your devoted servants among them."
41. (Allāh) said: "This is a Path (of return) that is straight to Me."
42. Indeed, as regards of My servants, you have no authority over them, except those who follow you of the deviators.
43. And Gehinnom (Hell) is surely their promised place for them all,
44. It It has seven gates; for each gate has an allotted part of them (from Satan’s followers).
45. Indeed, the pious will be in Gardens and Springs;
46. Enter it in peace, secure8.
8. The dwellers of Paradise will be safe from all ills, away from troubles, and all matters that might put a dent in their happiness and sense of security.
47. We shall have removed whatever of rancor is in their chests, (so they will be) brothers on raised couches, facing each other 'joyfully'.
48. No fatigue touches them therein, nor will they ever be expelled therefrom.
49. Tell My servants that I am the All-Forgiving, the All-Merciful,
50. And that My torment - is the most painful torment.
51. And tell them about the (angelic) guests of Abraham.
52. when they entered upon him, so they said: "Peace". (Abraham) said: "Indeed, we feel apprehensive of you9."
9. Since they came at a time when guests were not usually expected, he doubted their motives and wanted them to assure him of peace, which they promptly did.
53. They said: "Fear not. indeed, we give you good news of (the birth) of a knowledgeable boy (Isaac)."
54. (Abraham) said: "Have you (angels) given me good news (of a son) although old age has come upon me? Of what then do you give me good news?
55. (The angels) said: "We have given you good news with the truth, so do not be of the despairing."
56. (Abraham) said: "Who would despair of the Mercy of his Lord 'Allāh' except those who are astray?"
57. He said: "What is then your concern (here), O (angelic) messengers?"
58. They said: "We are indeed sent to a criminal people (in Sodom and Gomorrah),
59. Except for Lot's household: Indeed, We shall surely deliver them all,
60. Except his spouse; Allāh decreed that she is of those who remain behind10."
10. To perish, for having collaborated with the deniers.
61. When the (angelic) messengers came to Lot’s family,
62. He said, "Surely you are a people strangers (to me)."
63. (The angels) said: "But, we have come to you with that (torment) in which they have been doubting."
64. And we come to you with the truth, and we are certainly truthful.
65. So travel with your family in a part of the night, and follow their rear, and let not any one of you look back. And proceed where you are commanded.
66. And We decreed to him, that command: that the roots of these (sinners) would be cut off in the morning."
67. And the people of the city came seeking good news (of the arrival of the young men).
68. (Lot) said: "These are my guests, so put me not to shame.
69. And fear Allāh and do not disgrace me."
70. They said: "Did we not forbid you from (extending hospitality to) the strangers?"
71. (Lot) said: "Here are my daughters11 - if you would be doers (of lawful marriage)."
11. I.e., women of my community or my own daughters.
72. By your life (O Muhammad), surely they were indeed in their intoxication wandering blindly.
73. So the shriek (of Our punishment) seized them at the time of sunrise.
74. We turned (Sodom) upside down, and rained upon them stones of baked clay.
75. this there are certainly signs for the discerning.
76. And indeed, those cities (i.e., Sodom and Gomorrah) are surely (situated) on an established road12.
12. I.e., on the highway to the Levant, where the dead sea is now.
77. Indeed, in this there is certainly a sign for the believers.
78. And the companions of the Thicket (i.e., the dwellers of Madyan) were surely wrongdoers.
79. So We took vengeance on them. and indeed, they both (towns of Sodom and Midian) are on a manifest highway13.
13. Plain for all to see and take a lesson from.
80. Indeed, the people of the Stone (Valley, i.e., Thamud) also denied the messengers;
81. And We gave them Our signs, but from them they were turning away.

83. But seized them the shriek (of Our punishment) at early morning;

84. And all that which they used to earn (of wealth and power) availed them not.
85. We have not created the heavens and the earth and all that is between them except for a genuine purpose. And the Hour 'of Doom' is certainly coming, so overlook (O Muhammad, their faults) with the gracious overlooking14.
14. In which there is no blame or reproach.
Forgiving your enemies means showing kindness to those who oppose, mistreat, or harm you. It's a call to forgive without conditions, irrespective of how they treat you personally. This does not equate to pacifism, as Muslims are still expected to defend the innocent and speak the truth without hate. And that is why come after this in other chapters of the Qur’an the ordainment of Jihâd - fighting for God’s cause against the evil forces.

88. Do not extend your eyes towards what We have given certain pairs of them (the deniers) to enjoy, nor grieve over them, but lower your wing (in love and kindness) to the believers.
89. Say (Muhammad): "Indeed, I am the clear warner."
90. Just as We had sent down (scriptures) to the separatists15.
15. I.e., the Jews and the Christians who separated from the teachings of their Prophets. In some parts of their scriptures they believed and in some they disbelieved, and they changed others, and divided themselves into many differing sects.
91. Those who made the Qur’an into fragments16.
16. Believing in some and rejecting others according to their own inclinations.
92. So, by your Lord, We shall certainly question them all,
93. About what they used to do.
94. So declare what you are commanded (of Islamic Monotheism), and turn away from the polytheists.
95. Indeed, We are sufficient for you against the scoffers.

98. So glorify with the praise of your Lord (Allāh) and be among those who prostrate themselves (before Him).
99. And worship your Lord (Allāh alone), until there comes to you the certainty 'of death'17.
17. Following the Qur’an and the Sunnah 'teachings of Prophet Muhammad', to the very end of our lives is the right way for everyone to close the final chapter of his life's book and finishing well. Good end and gracefully living with life's changes testifies to the reality of Islam, our true faith. It leaves for those who remain a legacy of inspiring memories of worshipping Allāh alone without associating any partners with Him in worship and taking as living example His last and final messenger, the Prophet Muhammad.
