Al-Hijr

1. Alif Laam Ra¹. These are the Verses of the Book and a clear Recitation ².
1. The Qur’an is made up of such letters from the Arabic alphabet. The Arabs at the time of revelation were the unrivalled masters of the Arabic language and yet when challenged were totally unable to bring anything like the Qur’an. Despite this fact, the inimitable nature of the Qur’an and its divine source, God knows best the meaning of these disjointed Arabic letters.
2. Both the Book and the Recitation mentioned here refer to one and the same thing, the Qur’an itself; the Book that was to be and then the present recited Verses. Its double mention, as given here, is meant to draw special attention to the evidences it provides to the Truthfulness of the Message.
2. How eagerly the deniers will desire that they had been Muslims³.
3. On the Day of Judgement or at the time of death.
3. Leave them alone to eat and enjoy themselves and be diverted by (vain) hope⁴; for they will soon know (the Truth)⁵.
4. Vain hope of a long life, accomplishment of one’s aspirations, a peaceful life, a fortunate turn of events, etc., that makes one distracted from the real purpose of life and heedless to the Truth of Islam. One of the greatest reasons for which Allah has created mankind – which is one of the greatest tests – is the command to affirm His Oneness and to worship Him alone with no partner.
5. That there is no deity except Allah and that Muḥammad is the messenger of God.
4. Never did We destroy a town (for its sins) but for it was a known Decree.
5. No people can hasten its term nor can they postpone (it).
6. (The deniers) said: "O you (Muhammad) to whom the Reminder (the Qur’an) has been sent down. You are certainly out of your mind."
7. (Saying): "Why do you not bring to us the angels, if you are truthful?"
8. We do not send the angels except with Truth (Revelation or Divine Retribution) and in that case, they (the deniers) would have no respite.
9. We have sent down the Reminder (the Qur’an), and for it We are the Preserves.
10. We sent (messengers) before you among the communities of old.

11. There never came a messenger (of God) to them, but they ridiculed him.
12. Thus do We make (denial) to enter into the hearts of the wicked;
13. They would not believe in (this Qur’an), and indeed the tradition of the ancient (unbelievers) has already passed.
14. Even if We open to them a gateway of heaven, so that they continue to ascend into it.
15. They would certainly say: "Our eyes have only been dazzled, rather, we are a people bewitched."
16. We (Allah) have set up constellations in the heaven, and We adorned it for the beholders.

17. And We preserved it (the heaven) from every outcast devil,
18. Except him (devil) who stealthily try to listen (to the near heaven), then is chased away by a visible burning flame.
19. We have spread out the earth, and cast in it firm mountains, and caused to grow therein everything in due proportion.
20. We have made therein for you means of livelihood and for those (creatures) for whom you are not their providers.

22. We send the winds fertilizing, then send down water from the sky, so We give it to you to drink of, nor is it you who store it up.

24. We know those of you who have gone before, and those who will come later.
