Nūh

1 : 71

إِنَّآ أَرۡسَلۡنَا نُوحًا إِلَىٰ قَوۡمِهِۦٓ أَنۡ أَنذِرۡ قَوۡمَكَ مِن قَبۡلِ أَن يَأۡتِيَهُمۡ عَذَابٌ أَلِيمٞ

1. Indeed, We sent Noah to his people 'telling him': "Warn your people before there comes to them a painful torment."

2 : 71

قَالَ يَٰقَوۡمِ إِنِّي لَكُمۡ نَذِيرٞ مُّبِينٌ

2. He said: "O my people, surely I am a plain warner to you,

3 : 71

أَنِ ٱعۡبُدُواْ ٱللَّهَ وَٱتَّقُوهُ وَأَطِيعُونِ

3. Worship Allāh 'alone', fear Him, and obey me -

4 : 71

يَغۡفِرۡ لَكُم مِّن ذُنُوبِكُمۡ وَيُؤَخِّرۡكُمۡ إِلَىٰٓ أَجَلٖ مُّسَمًّىۚ إِنَّ أَجَلَ ٱللَّهِ إِذَا جَآءَ لَا يُؤَخَّرُۚ لَوۡ كُنتُمۡ تَعۡلَمُونَ

4. He will forgive you of your sins and give you respite for an appointed time. Surely, the term set by Allāh, when it comes, it cannot be postponed - if only you knew."

5 : 71

قَالَ رَبِّ إِنِّي دَعَوۡتُ قَوۡمِي لَيۡلٗا وَنَهَارٗا

5. (Noah) said: "Lord (Allāh), I have called my people (to Islam) night and day,

6 : 71

فَلَمۡ يَزِدۡهُمۡ دُعَآءِيٓ إِلَّا فِرَارٗا

6. Yet my calling increased them not except in flight (from the Truth);

7 : 71

وَإِنِّي كُلَّمَا دَعَوۡتُهُمۡ لِتَغۡفِرَ لَهُمۡ جَعَلُوٓاْ أَصَٰبِعَهُمۡ فِيٓ ءَاذَانِهِمۡ وَٱسۡتَغۡشَوۡاْ ثِيَابَهُمۡ وَأَصَرُّواْ وَٱسۡتَكۡبَرُواْ ٱسۡتِكۡبَارٗا

7. And surely whenever I call them [to Your guidance] so that You may forgive them, they put their fingers in their ears, cover themselves with their clothes ^[1], persist [in their denial of Islam] and were arrogant with [great] arrogance."

[1]. refusing to look or listen.

8 : 71

ثُمَّ إِنِّي دَعَوۡتُهُمۡ جِهَارٗا

8. Then Indeed, I called them (to Islam) publicly,

9 : 71

ثُمَّ إِنِّيٓ أَعۡلَنتُ لَهُمۡ وَأَسۡرَرۡتُ لَهُمۡ إِسۡرَارٗا

9. Then Indeed, I announced to them (the Message) in public and I confided to them in private;

10 : 71

فَقُلۡتُ ٱسۡتَغۡفِرُواْ رَبَّكُمۡ إِنَّهُۥ كَانَ غَفَّارٗا

10. Then I said, "Ask forgiveness from your Lord (Allāh), for He is truly oft-Forgiving;

11 : 71

يُرۡسِلِ ٱلسَّمَآءَ عَلَيۡكُم مِّدۡرَارٗا

11. He will send (rain from) the sky upon you in [continuous] shower,

12 : 71

وَيُمۡدِدۡكُم بِأَمۡوَٰلٖ وَبَنِينَ وَيَجۡعَل لَّكُمۡ جَنَّٰتٖ وَيَجۡعَل لَّكُمۡ أَنۡهَٰرٗا

12. And provide you with wealth and children, and bestow on you gardens and bestow on you rivers.

13 : 71

مَّا لَكُمۡ لَا تَرۡجُونَ لِلَّهِ وَقَارٗا

13. What is (wrong) with you that you do not show (fear and) hope to Allāh due to His Grandeur ^[2].

[2]. as you disobey Him carelessly.

14 : 71

وَقَدۡ خَلَقَكُمۡ أَطۡوَارًا

14. And indeed, He created you in stages ^[3]?

[3]. In reference to development of the embryo, i.e., first a sperm, then a clot of congealed blood, and then a fetus lump.

15 : 71

أَلَمۡ تَرَوۡاْ كَيۡفَ خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ سَبۡعَ سَمَٰوَٰتٖ طِبَاقٗا

15. Do you not consider how Allāh has created seven heavens, one above another,

16 : 71

وَجَعَلَ ٱلۡقَمَرَ فِيهِنَّ نُورٗا وَجَعَلَ ٱلشَّمۡسَ سِرَاجٗا

16. And placed the moon therein as a light, and placed the sun as a lamp?

17 : 71

وَٱللَّهُ أَنۢبَتَكُم مِّنَ ٱلۡأَرۡضِ نَبَاتٗا

17. And Allāh caused you to grow from the earth ^[4] like a plant,

[4]. I.e., your father Adam, whom Allāh created from clay, and then you live on what the earth produces of grain and fruits.

18 : 71

ثُمَّ يُعِيدُكُمۡ فِيهَا وَيُخۡرِجُكُمۡ إِخۡرَاجٗا

18. Then He will return you in it, and will bring you forth (a new) bringing forth.

19 : 71

وَٱللَّهُ جَعَلَ لَكُمُ ٱلۡأَرۡضَ بِسَاطٗا

19. And Allāh has made the earth for you an expanse;

20 : 71

لِّتَسۡلُكُواْ مِنۡهَا سُبُلٗا فِجَاجٗا

20. So that you may go along thereon spacious highways ^[5].

[5]. In pursuit of a lawful livelihood.

21 : 71

قَالَ نُوحٞ رَّبِّ إِنَّهُمۡ عَصَوۡنِي وَٱتَّبَعُواْ مَن لَّمۡ يَزِدۡهُ مَالُهُۥ وَوَلَدُهُۥٓ إِلَّا خَسَارٗا

21. Noah said: "Lord (Allāh), they have disobeyed me and followed (the one) who, (did) not increase him his wealth and his children except in loss (and ingratitude)."

22 : 71

وَمَكَرُواْ مَكۡرٗا كُبَّارٗا

22. And they (the idolaters) have plotted a mighty plot ^[6].

[6]. Against Noah, as they sent a mob of lowly people to insult him and pelt him with bad words.

23 : 71

وَقَالُواْ لَا تَذَرُنَّ ءَالِهَتَكُمۡ وَلَا تَذَرُنَّ وَدّٗا وَلَا سُوَاعٗا وَلَا يَغُوثَ وَيَعُوقَ وَنَسۡرٗا

23. And they said: "Do not abandon your gods 'idols', specially do not abandon Wadd, Suwa’, Yaghuth, Yauq, and Nasr ^[7].

[7]. These are the names of some righteous persons from Noah's people. When they passed away, Satan inspired their people to set up images in their honor and set them in their gathering places, and to give these images the names of those saints. They did this but did not worship them until these people passed away and knowledge of their origins were forgotten, then they were worshipped. Most of our predecessors have stated: After the death (of the righteous persons), they confined at their graves and made images and after much time passed they started worshipping them.

24 : 71

وَقَدۡ أَضَلُّواْ كَثِيرٗاۖ وَلَا تَزِدِ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ إِلَّا ضَلَٰلٗا

24. And indeed, they have misled many. (Lord), grant no increase to the unjust except in error."

25 : 71

مِّمَّا خَطِيٓـَٰٔتِهِمۡ أُغۡرِقُواْ فَأُدۡخِلُواْ نَارٗا فَلَمۡ يَجِدُواْ لَهُم مِّن دُونِ ٱللَّهِ أَنصَارٗا

25. Because of their sins they were drowned, then made to enter fire ^[8]. So they could not find for themselves from besides Allah any helpers.

[8]. The fire of the period between death and Resurrection.

26 : 71

وَقَالَ نُوحٞ رَّبِّ لَا تَذَرۡ عَلَى ٱلۡأَرۡضِ مِنَ ٱلۡكَٰفِرِينَ دَيَّارًا

26. And Noah said: "Lord, do not leave out on earth of the disbelievers an inhabitant;

27 : 71

إِنَّكَ إِن تَذَرۡهُمۡ يُضِلُّواْ عِبَادَكَ وَلَا يَلِدُوٓاْ إِلَّا فَاجِرٗا كَفَّارٗا

27. Indeed, If You leave them, they will mislead your servants, and will not beget any but immoral, ungrateful one.

28 : 71

رَّبِّ ٱغۡفِرۡ لِي وَلِوَٰلِدَيَّ وَلِمَن دَخَلَ بَيۡتِيَ مُؤۡمِنٗا وَلِلۡمُؤۡمِنِينَ وَٱلۡمُؤۡمِنَٰتِۖ وَلَا تَزِدِ ٱلظَّٰلِمِينَ إِلَّا تَبَارَۢا

28. Lord, forgive me, my parents, and whoever enters my house as a believer, and 'all' believing men and women - and do not increase the unjust except in perdition!
