1. Alif Lam Ra¹. These are the Verses of the Wise Book2.
1. The Qur’an is made up of such letters from the Arabic alphabet. The Arabs at the time of revelation were the unmatched masters of the Arabic language and yet when challenged were totally unable to bring anything like the Qur’an. Although these disjointed Arabic letters are referring to the inimitable nature of the Qur’an and its divine source, God knows best its meaning.
2. I.e., the Qur’an, whose verses are full of wisdom, fair rulings and guidance to the Right Path.
2. Is it a wonder to the people that We revealed to a man 'Muhammad' from among themselves, saying: "Warn the people 'from the Chastisement' and give good news to those who believe that theirs is a sure position of honor with their Lord 'Allāh3'." 'But' the deniers say: "This 'man' is certainly an obvious sorcerer.4"
3. Safely treasuring up for themselves a fine foundation for the future, so that they may get a firm hold on the real life - life of the Hereafter.
4. They could only rationalize the bewildering effect of the Message of Islam by saying that it bewitches people.
3. Indeed, your Lord is Allāh, Who created the heavens and the earth in six Days then rose over the Throne, governing the affairs of His creation. No one can intercede for others except after His Permission. This is Allāh, your 'real' Lord, so worship Him alone. Will you not then take heed?
4. To Him is your 'final' return all together - Allah’s Promise is always true. It is He Who begins the creation, then will resurrect it 'after their death', so that He may justly reward those who believe and do good deeds. But those who deny 'the Truth', for them is a drink of scalding hot water and a painful torment, for their 'persistent' denying.
5. It is He 'Allāh' Who made the sun radiant and the moon luminous, and appointed for the moon certain phases so that you may know the computation of years and the reckoning 'of time'. Allāh did not create it except for a genuine purpose. He makes the signs clear for a people who have knowledge.
6. The alternation of the night and day, and all that Allāh has created in the heavens and the earth, there are signs for a people who 'fear Allāh and' shun evil.
9. As for those who believe and do righteous deeds, their Lord 'Allāh' will guide them by their faith; there shall flow under them rivers, in gardens of bliss.
10. Their prayer therein is: "Glory 'and Honor' be to You, O Allāh," and their greeting therein is: "Peace be with you;" and the concluding of their prayer is: "All praise be to Allāh, the Lord of all beings."
11. If Allāh were to hasten to the people the evil (they invoke)5 just as He hastens for them the good, their term would have been already ended, but We 'give respite' and leave those who hope not for Our Meeting in their transgression, blindly wandering on.
12. When man is touched by hardship, he starts to pray while lying on his side, sitting or standing; but when We relieve him from hardship, he moves on as though he had never prayed to Us for the illness that touched him. Thus that which they do is made fair-seeming to the transgressors.
13. And, indeed, We destroyed generations before you when they 'persistently' commited iniquity and their messengers had come to them with clear proofs, but they would not believe. Thus do We recompense the wicked people.
15. When Our clear Verses are recited to them, those who hope not for Our Meeting say: "Bring a Qur’an other than this or change it." Say: "It is not 'proper' for me to change it of myself; I only follow that which is revealed to me. I fear, if I disobey 'Allāh' my Lord, the torment of a grievous Day."
16. Say 'Muhammad', "If Allah had willed 'otherwise' I would not have recited it to you, nor would He have made it known to you. I have stayed a lifetime among you before it6. Do you not then understand?
6. I.e., forty years before receiving any revelation.
18. They worship besides Allāh what can neither harm them nor benefit them, and they say: "These are our intercessors with Allāh." Say: "Do you 'presume to' inform Allāh of what He knows not in the heavens and the earth?" Glory be to Him, and exalted be He above all that which they associate 'with Him as partners in worship'.
19. Mankind were but a single nation7, then they differed. Had not a Word been decreed from 'Allāh' your Lord, the matter would have been decided between them about what they differed.
20. They (the deniers) say: "Why is not a miracle sent to him from his Lord (Allāh)8?" Say: "The (knowledge of the) unseen is only for Allāh. So wait, I am with you among those who wait."
21. When people 'i.e., the deniers' are granted mercy after having suffered adversity, they begin to plot against Our verses. Say: "Allāh is the Most Swift in His plans." Our 'angelic' messengers record all that you plot.
22. It is He 'Allāh' Who enables you to travel on land and sea; until when you are in the ships and they sail on with them in a pleasant breeze and they rejoice in it, 'suddenly' a violent wind comes, and the waves come to them from all sides, and they become certain that they are encompassed; they pray to Allāh, being sincere to Him in devotion (saying): "If You deliver us from this, we will certainly be of the grateful ones."
23. But when He delivers them, they rebel on the earth unjustly. O people, Your rebellion is against your own selves; a brief enjoyment of this worldly life, then to Us is your return, so We shall inform you of what you used to do.
24. The example of 'this' worldly life is just like rain We send down from the sky, so it brings forth the intermingled vegetation of the earth of which men and cattle eat; until, when the earth has taken on its adornment and is beautified, and its people think that they have all the powers of disposal over it, Our command reaches it by night or by day and We make it like a clean-mown harvest, as if it had not flourished yesterday. Thus do We explain the signs in detail for the people who reflect 'and realise the Truth'.
26. For those who do good is the best reward and more9, neither darkness nor dust will cover their faces. These are the people of Paradise, they will abide therein forever.
9. The best reward that's the Paradise, and more is seeing the Honorable Face of Allāh. In that joy-filled moment when we see Allāh and know Him as He knows each of us, the Muslims. He will infuse us with the faith, hope, and love we need to stand firm, until we gaze at our Loving and Living God - Allāh. He is exalted, forever exalted, the King is the incomparable Highest in all His Attributes and we will praise Him. Allāh is our Lord and forever His truth shall reign. Heaven and earth rejoice in His great Name - Allāh -.
27. As for those who commit evil deeds, the reward of an evil deed is the like of it. Humiliation will cover them 'the pagans and deniers' - they will have none to protect them from Allāh - as if their faces had been covered by the pitch-darkness of night. These are the occupants of the Hellfire. They will abide therein forever.
28. On the Day when We gather them all together, then will say to the pagans: "Stay where you are, you and your idols." Then We will separate them 'from their idols', and their idols will say: "Never were you worshipping us."
30. There, 'on that Day', every soul will experience the results of all that it had done. They will be brought back to Allāh, their True Patron, and what they invented 'of falsehood' will vanish from them.
31. Ask 'them': "Who provides for you from heaven and earth? Or Who controls hearing and sight and who brings the living out of the dead, and the dead out of the living, and who rules and regulates (the whole universe)? They will say: "Allāh." Say, then: "Will you not 'fear Him and' shun evil?"
34. Ask 'them': "Can any of your idols create something, (cause it to die), and then bring it back to life again?" Say: "Only Allāh can originate the creation and bring it to life again." How are you then turned away?
35. Ask 'them': "Can any of your idols guide you to the Truth? Say: "Only Allāh guides to the truth." Is He then Who guides to the Truth more worthy to be followed, or he who is not himself guided, unless he is guided? What is wrong with you? How do you judge 'so unjustly'?
36. Most of the unbelievers follow only conjecture. However, conjecture avails nothing against the Truth at all. Indeed, Allāh is All-Knowing of all that they do.
37. This Qur’an is not such as could ever be produced by other than Allāh, rather it is a confirmation of what was before it 'of Divine Scripture' and a detailed explanation of the Book; there is no doubt about it, 'it is' from 'Allāh' the Lord of all beings.
38. Or do they say: "He 'Muhammad' has invented it 'this Qur’an'?" Say: "Then bring one Chapter like it, and call upon whomever you can other than Allāh 'for help', if what you say is true."
39. Rather, they deny that of which they have no comprehensive knowledge and whose interpretation has not yet come to them. Thus did those before them deny 'the Truth'. See then how was the end of the unjust.
40. There are some among them who will 'eventually' believe in it 'the Qur’an', and others who will not believe in it, and your Lord knows best the corrupters.
45. On the Day when He will resurrect them it will seem to them as though they had not stayed 'in this world' but an hour of the day, knowing one another. Lost indeed will be those who denied the Meeting with Allāh, and were not 'rightly' guided.
46. Whether We show you 'Muhammad' some of what We threaten them with, or cause you to die10 'before that', to Us is their 'final' return and Allāh is a Witness to 'all' that they do.
10. They will not be able to escape Our Punishment.
47. For every nation there is a Messenger. When their Messenger comes, the matter will be judged between them fairly, and they will not be dealt with unjustly.11
11. By his coming, Truth stands out clear from error: Those who believe are saved but those who deny are doomed.
49. Say 'Muhammad': "I do not control for myself any harm or any benefit, except what Allāh wills." Every nation has a term. When their term comes, they cannot delay it for a moment, nor can they advance it.
52. Then it will be said to those who worked iniquity: "Taste the abiding torment; are you being recompensed except for what you used to commit 'of sins'?"
54. If every soul that has done iniquity13, had all that is in the earth, it would offer it for ransom, and they will manifest regret when they see the torment, and the matter will be judged between them fairly, and they will not be dealt with unjustly.
13. By worshiping others besides Allāh and dying as such without repenting.
57. O people, there has come to you an admonition from 'Allāh' your Lord and a healing for what is in the chests and a guidance and a mercy for the believers.
58. Say: "In the Bounty of Allāh 'i.e., the Islamic Faith' and in His mercy 'the Qur’an' - in that they should rejoice14; it is better than all 'the worldly pleasures and wealth' that they amass15."
14. The source of true and lasting joy is from Allāh and by following His last and final messenger, prophet Muhammad peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him. It enables us to shine Allah’s light as we strive to bring joy to others, a joy that offers hope and strength to face trials.
15. Believers always need to remember Allah’s great bounty by which He guided them to Islam and gave them the gift of the Qur’an to which any worldly gain is not even remotely comparable. When the righteous prosper the city rejoices. When those who truly live by Islamic faith begin to influence a community, then this signals good news because it means Allah’s justice is taking hold. Greed diminishes. The poor find support. The oppressed are protected. Whenever Islam flourishes, then there’s joy and blessing in the city.
59. Ask 'the pagans, O Muhammad': "Have you considered what Allāh has sent down for you of provision, then you make 'a part' of it unlawful and 'a part' lawful." Say: "Has Allāh permitted you to do so, or do you invent lies about Allāh?"
60. What will be the thought of those who invent lies about Allāh on the Day of Resurrection? Indeed, Allāh is Bountiful towards the people, but most of them do not give thanks.
61. No matter You may engaged in, nor do you recite any portion of the Qur’an, nor do you do any work, but We are Witnesses over you when you enter into it. Nothing is hidden from "Allāh" your Lord 'so much as' the weight of an atom in the earth or in the heaven, nor any thing less than that nor greater, but it is all in a clear Record.
62. Oh, surely, the close servants of Allāh shall have no fear, nor shall they grieve16;
16. So do not worry, saying, ‘What shall we eat?’ or ‘What shall we drink?’ or ‘What shall we wear?’ For the pagans run after all these things, and Allah knows that you need them. But seek first His Kingdom by keeping to His Commandments and avoiding evil, and all these things will be given to you as well through your efforts.
66. Oh, surely, to Allāh belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. Those who invoke others besides Allāh, they do not 'really' follow 'these so-called' partners (idols or false gods); they follow only conjecture, and they only guess.
67. It is He 'Allāh' Who has made for you the night 'dark' that you may rest therein, and the day bright. Indeed, there are Signs in this for a people who listen.
68. They say: "Allāh has taken for Himself a son." Glorified and Exalted is He above this; He is the Rich 'free of all needs': To Him belongs all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth. You have no evidence for this 'claim that Allāh has a son'. Do you say against Allāh what you do not know?
70. 'It is only' a brief enjoyment in this world, then to Us will be their 'final' return; then We shall make them taste the severest torment, for their 'persistent' denying 'of the Truth'.
71. Recite to them the story of Noah, when he said to his people: "My people, if my stay and my reminding (you) of the revelations of Allāh is hard on you - then (know that) on Allāh (alone) do I rely. Then resolve upon your plot and gather your associates, then let not your plot be obscure to you, then carry it out against me, and give me no respite."
72. If you turn away 'from my advice', I have not asked for any reward from you. My reward is only with Allāh, and I am commanded to be of the Muslims 'those who submit to the Will of God'.
73. But they rejected him, so We delivered him and those with him in the Ship, and We made them successors and drowned those who rejected Our revelations. See then what was the end of the 'people' who were warned 'and did not pay heed'.
74. Then We sent after him messengers to their people, and they came to them with clear proofs, but they would not believe in what they had rejected before; thus We set seals upon the hearts of the transgressors.
78. They said: "Have you come to us to turn us away from what we found our fathers upon, and (that) greatness in the land should be for you two (Moses and Aaron)? But we are not believers in you."
81. So when they cast down, Moses said to them: "What you have brought it 'is' the magic. Allāh will certainly nullify it. Indeed, Allāh does not set aright the work of the corrupters."
83. But none believed in Moses except the offspring (i.e., youths) of his people, for fear of Pharaoh and their own chiefs, lest he should persecute them. Indeed, Pharaoh was a (haughty) tyrant in the land, and he was indeed of the transgressors.
87. We inspired to Moses and his brother 'saying': "Designate 'certain' houses for your people in Egypt, and make your houses 'open and' places of worship, and establish prayer. Give the glad tiding 'of God's help' to the believers."
88. Moses said: "Our Lord, You have given to Pharaoh and his council splendor and riches in this worldly life. Our Lord, they have gone far away from Your 'right' path 'and persisted in their stubbornness and denial': Our Lord, destroy their wealth and harden their hearts, so that they will not believe until they see the painful torment.
89. 'Allāh' said: "The prayer of you both 'i.e., Moses and Aaron' has indeed been accepted, so continue on the right course, and do not follow the path of those who have no knowledge."
90. We made the children of Israel pass over the sea, then Pharaoh and his soldiers followed them in rebellion and transgression; until when drowning overtook him, (Pharaoh) said: "I believe that there is no god (worthy of worship) except Him 'Allāh' in Whom the children of Israel believe, and I am one of the Muslims."
93. We settled the children of Israel in a goodly settlement, and We provided them with good things; and they differed not until the knowledge had come to them. 'Allāh' your Lord will judge between them on the Day of Resurrection about 'all' that in which they used to differ.
94. So if you are in doubt about 'these stories' that We have revealed to you18, then you may ask those who read the 'former' Scripture before you; certainly the Truth has come to you from 'Allāh' your Lord, so be not of the doubters.
18. And that your name Muhammad is written in the Bible.
98. There has not been a (single) town that believed 'in its entirety' and thereupon benefited by its belief except the people of Jonah. When they believed, We removed from them the torment of disgrace in this worldly life, and gave them enjoyment for a while.
102. Do they then wait for 'anything' but the like of the days of those who passed on before them? Say: "Wait then, I am too with you of those who wait."
104. Say 'Muhammad': "O people, if you are in doubt as to my religion, then (know that) I do not worship those whom you worship besides Allāh, but I worship Allāh 'alone' Who causes you to die, and I am commanded to be of the believers.
107. If Allāh touches you with harm, then there is none to remove it except Him19; and if He intends good for you, then there is none to repel His favor. He brings it to whom He wills of His slaves 'of mankind and jinn' - for He is the All-Forgiving, the Most Merciful.
19. A group of people came to Muhammad, the Messenger of God (may peace and blessings be upon him). He accepted the pledge of allegiance of nine and did not accept it from one. They said: O Messenger of God, you accepted the pledge of nine but not of this one. He said: "He is wearing an amulet." So, he put his hand in and cut it, and thus, accepted his pledge and said: "Whoever hangs an amulet has committed polytheism." Thus Making amulets, crosses, buying them, wearing them or weaving them into garments or putting them on walls or cars, and so on also come under the heading of prohibited idolatrous actions.
108. Say 'Muhammad': "O people, indeed there has come to you the Truth from 'Allāh' your Lord. So whoever follows the right Path, he follows it only for the good of his own soul; and whoever goes astray, he goes astray only to his own harm; and I am not a keeper over you.
