2. As for female and male fornicators, flog each of them with a hundred lashes¹, and let not pity for them detain you in the matter of 'enforcing' the laws of Allāh², if you believe in Allāh and the Last Day. Let a party of believers witness their torment.
1. Fornication has to be proven either by confession or the testimony of four reliable eyewitnesses to having actually seen the act take place. This ruling is applicable to unmarried fornicators. Execution by stoning i.e., to death is confirmed in the sunnah for married adulterers.
In the Bible, the basis for punishment of stoning specifically for adultery is clearly provided in Leviticus (20:10-12) which reads: "If a man commits adultery with another man's wife, even with the wife of his neighbour, both the adulterer and adulteress must be put to death...." Further, in Deuteronomy (22:22-24), it is stated that, "If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, you should take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death.". Criminalising adultery and the provision of the severe punishment of stoning to death is legitimate in both Christianity and Islam. For Christianity, this is based on the evidence from the Old Testament and the New Testament as Jesus Christ says with regard to the fulfillment of the Law: "Do not think that I have come to abolish the law of the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them" (Matt, 5:17).
2. I.e., Do not let sympathy for a wicked person move you to change anything decreed by Allāh, for in His Law is protection of society as a whole.
3. The fornicator none marries him except a fornicatress or a polytheist woman, and the fornicatress none marries her except a fornicator or a polytheist man. Marriage to such persons are unlawful to the believers.
4. Those who accuse chaste women (or men, of adultery) then do not produce four eyewitnesses (to support their allegations), flog them with eighty lashes. And never accept any testimony from them ever; for they are the disobedient.
6. As for those (husbands) who accuse their wives (of adultery) and have no witnesses except themselves, should testify four times (swearing) by Allāh that he is telling the truth.
11. Indeed, those who brought up the slander³ are a group (of hypocrites) among you. Do not think it is bad for you; rather, it is good for you⁴. Every one of them (the hypocrites) will have what he has earned of sin. As for him who was the chief instigator⁵, he will have a grievous torment.
3. Against Aishah, the wife of the Prophet.
4. For believers being distinguished from hypocrites; and ‘Ā’ishah being absolved from false accusation, and rules were revealed on such incidents, etc.
5. I.e., ‘Abdullah ibn ’Ubayy, leader of the hypocrites in Madinah at that time.
13. Why did they not produce four eyewitnesses? Since they have failed to produce eyewitnesses, then it is they - in the Sight of Allāh - who are the liars.
14. Were it not for Allah’s Favor upon you and His mercy in this world and the Hereafter, you would have certainly been touched with a grievous torment for your involvement in this false accusation.
15. When you received it with your tongues and spoke with your mouths what you had no knowledge of, and you deemed it an easy matter, while in the sight of Allāh it is blasphemy.
19. Those who like to publicize indecency among the believers, they will have a painful torment in this world and in the Hereafter. For Allāh knows what you do not know.
21. O believers, do not follow the footsteps of Satan. Whoever follows the footsteps of Satan, he commands indecency and evil. Had it not been Allah’s favor upon you and His mercy, not one of you would have ever been pure, but Allāh purifies whom He wills⁶. For Allāh is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
6. The Word of God, the Qur’an, keeps our heart clean by pointing out the areas that need confession and renunciation. It helps to remove the dirt. The Qur'an and the Sunnah of Prophet Muhammad exhorts us to obey Allāh. The pure heart, by necessity, is the obedient heart. To obey Allah’s Word with all our heart is to obey Allāh with a pure heart. There is an important connection between obedience and purity of heart. Such obedience involves doing actions that are pleasing to Allāh. To be good and pure we should keep away from idolatry and sins. There are many forms of idolatry in the modern world, with many new and subtle ones in addition to the old and familiar ones. Materialism, greed, luxury, new gadgets, work, appearances, new lifestyles and the like - all these have the potential to negatively affect the purity of the heart. We are warned to keep away from anything that can become an idol, and every idol that pollutes our heart. The Prophet Muhammad said: "The lawful is clear and the unlawful is clear, and between them are matters unclear that are unknown to most people. Whoever is wary of these unclear matters has absolved his religion and honor. And whoever indulges in them has indulged in the unlawful. It is like a shepherd who herds his sheep too close to preserved sanctuary, and they will eventually graze in it. Every king has a sanctuary, and the sanctuary of Allāh is what He has made unlawful. There lies within the body a piece of flesh. If it is sound, the whole body is sound; and if it is polluted, the whole body is polluted. This is the heart." The Prophet, peace be upon him, was once asked, who are the best people?” He said: "One with a heart swept clean and truthful in speech. We said: “O Messenger of God, we know truthful in speech. What is a heart swept clean?” The Prophet said: "One that is Godfearing and pure, in which there is neither sin, nor transgression, nor envy." We said, “Who shows a sign of it?” The Prophet said: "One who despises worldliness and loves the Hereafter." We said: “And who shows a sign of it?” The Prophet said: "A believer with good character."
22. Let not those of you who possess grace and abundance swear against giving to relatives, the destitute, and immigrants for Allah’s Cause. Let them pardon and overlook. Do you not love that Allāh should forgive you⁷? For Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
7. A person who doesn't forgive others will not be forgiven. If you forgive other people when they sin against you, Allāh will also forgive you. Allāh desires that everyone forgives. You find peace by forgiving others, while yourself unforgiveness delivers you to stress and emotional suffering. Forgiveness calms stress levels, leading to improved health.
23. Those who (falsely) accuse chaste, innocent and faithful women8 are cursed in this world and in the Hereafter, and they will have a grievous torment.
8. Or men, of committing unlawful carnal relations.
26. Bad words and deeds are (characteristic) of bad people. Bad people are (inclined) towards the bad words and deeds. Similarly the good words and deeds are (characteristic) of good people. And good people (are inclined) towards the good words and deeds. Such⁸ are clear from what is said (of slander). For them is Forgiveness and a generous provision.
8. Innocent people: Aishah, the wife of the Prophet, and those innocent and pure similar to her.
27. O believers, do not enter houses other than your own houses until you have asked permission and greeted their inhabitants9. This is better for you, that you may remember.
9. Muhammad, The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said, “Three people have a guarantee from Allāh 'God'. If he lives he will have provision to suffice him, and if he dies he will enter Paradise: one who enters his house and greets with the greeting of peace 'Islam, i.e., Assalamu alaykum' has a guarantee from Allāh, one who goes out to the mosque has a guarantee from Allāh, and one who goes out in the way of Allāh has a guarantee from Allāh.”
28. If you do not find anyone therein, then do not enter until permission is given to you. If you are told: "Go back", then go back. This is purer for you. For Allāh knows well what you do.
29. There is no sin on you that you enter (without asking permission) uninhabited houses10 wherein you have some benefit11. Allāh knows whatever you reveal or hide.
10. Public places as in the case of travellers inns and charitable hostels.
11. Such as rest, shelter, commodities, one's personal belongings, etc.
30. Tell to the believing men to (maintain their modesty), lower their gaze from what is unlawful12 and to guard their carnal desires. This is purer for them. Surely Allāh is All-Aware of what they do.
12. Such as looking with lust at women who are not their wives. Anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart.
31. Tell to the believing women to (maintain their modesty), lower their gaze13 and guard their carnal desires. Let them not display their beauty (whether natural or with make-up) except what (must unavoidably) appear thereof14, and let them draw their veils over their (heads, faces, and) chests (and what is beyond), and let them not display their (hidden) beauty except to their husbands or (part of it such as their faces, necks, hands to) their fathers, or the fathers of their husbands, or their sons, or the sons of their husbands, or their brothers, or their brother’s sons, or their sister’s sons, or their women, or those whom their right hands possess, or male attendants (devoid of sexual feeling), or children who are not yet aware of the private aspects of women; and let them not stamp their feet in order to draw attention to their hidden adornment. Turn to Allāh all of you in repentance, O believers, that you may succeed and prosper.
13. In the presence of men who are not near of kin and so lawful for marriage.
14. I.e., the outer garments or whatever might appear out of necessity, such as a part of the face or the palms of hands.
32. Marry off those among you who are single and those who are righteous among your bondmen and bondwomen. If they be poor, Allāh will enrich them from His bounty; for Allāh is Ample-Giving, All-Knowing.
33. Let those who do not find the means to marry remain chaste until Allāh enriches them from His bounty. And 'as for' those who ask for a contract (of emancipation) from among those whom your right hands possess, give them the contract, if you know any good in them, and give them of the wealth of Allāh which He has given you. Do not compel your maid girls to prostitution15 when they desire to keep chaste, in order to seek the frail goods of this worldly life. Whoever compels them, then after their compulsion, Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful16.
15. Sexual slavery, or commercial sexual exploitation.
16. And the sin lays on the compeller, the human trafficker.
35. Allāh is the Light of the heavens and the earth17; the example of His Light18 is like a niche in which there is a lamp, the lamp is in a crystal. The crystal is like a shining star, lit from 'the oil of' a blessed olive-tree, located neither to the east nor the west19. Its oil is almost lights up though fire does not touch it. Light upon light. Allāh guides to His Light whom He wills. Allāh sets forth examples for the people. Allāh is Knowing of all things.
17. By which He guides their inhabitants. Allāh invite confused, lost unbelievers to follow Him out of their spiritual darkness. Allāh is the light of the world. Whoever follows Allāh and His messenger Muhammad will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. In God’s light, we can see stumbling blocks, sin, and blind spots, allowing Him to remove such darkness from our lives as He shines His light into our hearts and on our path. Allah’s light brings us protection, and guidance. Instead of wandering through life, we can seek Allāh for direction as He lights the way.
18. The Faith and the Qur’an in the heart of a believer.
19. But on a hill where it receives light from morning till evening.
36. 'That lights shines' in houses (Mosques) that Allāh has declared to be highly respected and His Name be mentioned therein; exalting Him within them, in the mornings and the evenings -
37. Men, whom neither trade nor selling distracts them from the Remembrance of Allāh, performance of prayer and paying the poor-rate. They fear a Day in which the hearts and eyes will be overturned;
38. That Allāh may reward them according to the best of their deeds, and increase them more out of His bounty. Allāh gives sustenance to whom He wills without limit.
39. The deeds of the unbelievers are like a mirage in a desert, which a thirsty man thinks is water; until when he comes to it he finds nothing. Instead, He finds Allāh there (in the Hereafter) who gives him his due recompense. For Allāh is Swift in Reckoning.
40. Or it (the deeds of the unbelievers) are like the darkness of a deep, stormy sea with layers of big waves, covered by (dark) clouds. It is darkness upon darkness; whereby if one stretches out his hand he can hardly see it. The one to whom Allāh does not give light (of guidance), for him there is no light20.
20. Some of the supplications of the Prophet Muhammad were: "O Allāh, place light in my heart, light in my sight, light in my hearing, light on my right, light on my left, light above me, light below me, light in front of me, light behind me, make light for me." He asked that light be engulfing his organs and all his sides, which is translated into clarification and illumination of the truth and guidance to it. Therefore, he asked for light in all parts of his body as well as his behaviors, life changes, situations, and entirety from the six directions so that he will never be misguided in any way.
41. Do you not see that Allāh is glorified by whoever is in the heavens and the earth, and the birds with outspread wings? He knows everyone's prayers and praising. For Allāh has absolute knowledge of all what they do.
43. Do you not see that Allāh drives the clouds gently, brings them together, piles them up, then you see the rain coming forth from their midst? He sends down from the sky, mountains (of clouds) wherein is hailstones, striking therewith whom He wills and turning it away from whom He wills. The flash of His lightning almost takes away the eyesight.
45. Allāh has created every living being from water. Some of them creep on their bellies, some walk on two feet, and some of them walk on four legs. Allāh creates what He wills. Allāh is Able to do all things.
47. They (the hypocrites) say: "We believe in Allāh and in the messenger 'Muhammad' and we obey;" then a party of them turn back after this. These are not believers.
50. Is there a sickness (of hypocrisy) in their hearts? Or are they in doubt? Or do they fear that Allāh and His messenger 'Muhammad' will be unjust to them? Rather, it is they who are the unjust.
51. The only response of the believers, when they are called to Allāh and His messenger 'Muhammad' that he may judge between them, is to say: "We hear and we obey." These are the successful.
53. They swear by Allāh with their most solemn oaths that if you command them they would go forth (for fighting in Allah’s Cause). Say: "Swear not". (Such) obedience (of yours) is known (to be false). Indeed, Allāh is Well-Aware of all that you do.
54. Say: "Obey Allāh and obey the messenger 'Muhammad'." If you turn away, then upon him is only that 'duty' which is charged on him 'to convey Allah’s message', and upon you is that which is charged on you 'to listen and obey'. For if you obey him (the prophet Muhammad), you will be 'rightly' guided. Nothing is upon the messenger (of Allāh) except a clear delivering (of Allah’s Message).
55. Allāh has promised to those of you who believe and do righteous deeds that He will grant them authority on the earth, just as He granted it to those before them. He will make the religion (of Islam) that He has chosen for them to stand supreme. He will replace their fear with peace and security so that they will worship Me alone, not associating anything (in worship) with Me. Whoever denies (the Truth) after this, these are the rebellious.
58. O believers, let those whom your right hands possess and those of you who have not reached puberty ask permission of you three times; before the morning prayer, and when you put off your clothes at midday in summer, and after the prayer of nightfall. These are three times of privacy for you; neither is it a blame for you nor for them besides these (periods), when some of you must go around attending to (the needs of) others22. Thus Allāh makes clear the Verses to you. For Allāh is All-knowing, All-Wise.
22. If they come into your presence without permission.
59. When the children among you have reached puberty, let them seek permission as those before them sought permission. Thus does Allāh make clear to you His verses, for Allāh is All-Knowing, All-Wise.
60.As to the elderly (menopausal) women23 who do not expect to marry, it is no sin for them if they discard their (outer) clothes (such as a cloak, or face veil) without displaying their beauty and adornments. If they refrain (from discarding their outer clothing) it is better for them. (Know that) Allāh is All-Hearing, All-Knowing.
61. There is no blame on the blind, nor is there blame on the lame, nor is there blame on the sick, nor on yourselves that you eat from your houses, or your father’s houses or your mother’s houses, or your brother’s houses, or your sister’s houses, or your paternal uncle’s houses, or your paternal aunt’s houses, or your maternal uncle’s houses, or your maternal aunt’s houses, or what you possess the keys of, or your friend’s (houses). There is no sin upon you whether you eat together or separately. When you enter houses, give greetings of peace24, a greeting from Allāh, blessed (and) good. Thus Allāh makes clear to you the Verses that you may understand.
62. The believers are only those who believe in Allāh and His messenger 'Muhammad', and when they are with him on some common matter, they do not leave until they have asked his permission. Those who ask your permission are the ones who (really) believe in Allāh and His messenger. So when they ask your permission for some affair of theirs, give permission to whom you will of them and ask forgiveness for them from Allāh. Indeed, Allāh is All-Forgiving, Most Merciful.
63. Do not make the calling of the messenger (of Allāh) among you as your calling one another. Allāh knows those of you who slip away, concealed by others25. So let those beware who go against his (the prophet’s) order, lest a trial afflict them or there befalls them a painful torment.
25. Without taking the permission to leave from the messenger.
64. To Allāh 'alone' belongs all that is in the heavens and the earth. He knows that which you are upon26. So (let them beware) the Day when they will be 'all' returned to Him, and He will inform them of what they did. For Allāh has absolute knowledge of all things.
26. of belief, disbelief, or hypocrisy and the condition of your souls.
