2. As for female and male fornicators, flog each of them with a hundred lashes¹, and let not pity for them detain you in the matter of 'enforcing' the laws of Allāh², if you believe in Allāh and the Last Day. Let a party of believers witness their torment.
1. Fornication has to be proven either by confession or the testimony of four reliable eyewitnesses to having actually seen the act take place. This ruling is applicable to unmarried fornicators. Execution by stoning i.e., to death is confirmed in the sunnah for married adulterers.
In the Bible, the basis for punishment of stoning specifically for adultery is clearly provided in Leviticus (20:10-12) which reads: "If a man commits adultery with another man's wife, even with the wife of his neighbour, both the adulterer and adulteress must be put to death...." Further, in Deuteronomy (22:22-24), it is stated that, "If a man happens to meet in a town a virgin pledged to be married and he sleeps with her, you should take both of them to the gate of that town and stone them to death.". Criminalising adultery and the provision of the severe punishment of stoning to death is legitimate in both Christianity and Islam. For Christianity, this is based on the evidence from the Old Testament and the New Testament as Jesus Christ says with regard to the fulfillment of the Law: "Do not think that I have come to abolish the law of the Prophets; I have not come to abolish them but to fulfill them" (Matt, 5:17).
2. I.e., Do not let sympathy for a wicked person move you to change anything decreed by Allāh, for in His Law is protection of society as a whole.
3. The fornicator none marries him except a fornicatress or a polytheist woman, and the fornicatress none marries her except a fornicator or a polytheist man. Marriage to such persons are unlawful to the believers.
4. Those who accuse chaste women (or men, of adultery) then do not produce four eyewitnesses (to support their allegations), flog them with eighty lashes. And never accept any testimony from them ever; for they are the disobedient.
6. As for those 'husbands' who accuse their wives (of adultery) and have no witnesses except themselves, should testify four times 'swearing' by Allāh that he is telling the truth.
