Translation of the meanings Surah: Al-Qasas   Ayah:

Al-Qasas

1. Ta Seen Meem¹.
1. See footnote to Qur’an chapter2: Verse1.
2. These are Verses of the clear Book².
2. The clear Book is the Qur’an whose verses are clear with regards to its language and rulings, and all its meanings. A Book whose Truth is evident and which clears up that which is indefinite and inexact.
3. We recite to you (Muhammad) of the story of Moses and Pharaoh in truth, for people who believe.
4. Indeed, Pharaoh exalted himself in the land and made its people into factions, oppressing a group from among them  (i.e., the children of Israel); slaughtering their sons and keeping their women alive. Surely he was one of the corruptors.
5. And We wanted to bestow favor upon those who were oppressed in the land, and make them examples 'in Faith' and make them heirs3;
3. Of the blessed land of the Levant after the destruction of Pharaoh.
6. And to give them power in the land4, and to show Pharaoh and Haman and their soldiers, from them, what they were taking precautions against5.
4. Of the Levant.
5. That his kingdom would come to an end at the hands of a newborn from the Children of Israel.
7. And We inspired to Moses' mother: "Suckle him (for a time), but when you fear for him, cast him into the river and do not fear nor grieve. We shall certainly bring him back to you, and make him one of the messengers".
8. Then Pharaoh’s family picked him up (out of the river, for We had willed) that he becomes an enemy and a grief to them. Indeed, Pharaoh, Haman, and their soldiers were sinful.
9. And Pharaoh’s spouse said: "A comfort of the eye to me and you. Do not kill him; perhaps he will be of use to us, or we may adopt him as a son. "While they were unaware"6.
6. What would be the end result of this matter.
10. And the heart of Moses' mother became empty (of all else). And indeed she was about to disclose it (that the child is her son) had We not bound fast her heart that she would be of the believers.
11. And she said to his sister7: "Trace his path." So she spotted him from afar, while they did not perceive,
7. i.e., Miriam
12. And We had prohibited from him (Moses) all wet nurses before, (until his sister came) and she said: "Shall I direct you to a household who will take care of him for you, while they are to him (for his upbringing) sincere?"
13. So We did return him (Moses) to his mother, so that her eye might be delighted, and not grieve, and that she would know that the Promise of Allāh is 'always' true, but most of them do not know.
14. And When (Moses) reached his (age of) full strength and matured (in body and mind), We gave him sound judgment and knowledge. And thus do We reward the good-doers.
15. And (one day) he entered the city at a time when (most of) its people were unaware8; so he encountered therein two men fighting. This of his party, and this of his enemy. Then the one who was of his party call him for help against him who was of his enemy. So Moses punched him with his fist and he finished him off (to death). (Moses) said: "This is Satan’s work; he is an enemy, openly leading astray."
8. Resting in their houses.
16. (Moses) said: "My Lord (Allah), I have wronged myself, so forgive me, so (Allāh) forgave him9. For He is the All-Forgiving, the Most Merciful."
9. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) said, narrating from his Lord 'Allāh', may He be blessed and exalted: “O My slaves (of mankind and jinn), all of you are astray except those whom I guide, so ask Me for guidance, and I will guide you. O My slaves, all of you are hungry except those whom I feed, so ask me for food and I will feed you. O My slaves, all of you are naked except those whom I clothe, so ask Me for clothing and I will clothe you. O My slaves, you err night and day, but I forgive all sins, so ask Me for forgiveness and I will forgive you." With regard to that which no one but Allāh, may He be exalted, is able to do, it is not permissible to seek it from anyone except Allāh, may He be glorified; it should not be sought from the angels or from the Prophets or from anyone else. It is not permissible to say to anyone other than Allāh: ‘Forgive me’ or ‘Grant us rain or ‘Grant us victory’ or ‘Guide our hearts’ and so on. One should turn to Allāh at times of ease and at times of hardship, and seek the help of Allāh in all his affairs. If a person calls anyone else to help him in a matter in which that person is able to help like the situation of this Israelite asking help from Moses, then this is permissible. So long as a person is alive, present and able, there is nothing wrong with seeking his help, but it is better and preferable to ask Allāh for help in all circumstances. And Allāh is Able to do all things.
17. (Moses) said: "My Lord (Allāh), for what you bestowed on me (of all your favors and forgiveness), I shall never be a supporter of the guilty."
18. And so (Moses) became in the city fearful, vigilant watching out. when behold, (the man) who sought his help the previous day calling out to him for help. Moses said to him: "Indeed, you are surely a clear quarrelsome fellow."
19. So when he wanted to strike the one who was an enemy to them both, he said: " Moses, do you want to kill me10 as you killed a person yesterday? You only want to be a tyrant in the land, and you do not want to be of the reformers."
10. I.e., the Israelite or the Coptic thought that Moses wanted to strike him.
20. And a man came running from the farthest part of the city, he said: "Moses, the eminent ones (of the city) are consulting about you to kill you, so leave (immediately); Surely I am one of the (sincere) advisers to you."
21. So he went forth therefrom, fearing, vigilant, watching out, he said: "My Lord (Allāh), deliver me from the unjust people."
22. And when he (Moses) directed himself towards Midian, he said: "Maybe my Lord (Allāh) will guide me to the right way."
23. And when came to the well of Midian, he found on it a crowd of men watering, and he found aside from them two women11 keeping away (their flocks from others). He asked them: "What is the concern with you too?" They said: "We do not water until the shepherds depart (with their flocks from the water), and our father is a very old man."
11. Zipporah and her younger sister.
24. So he watered (their flocks) for them both, then turned back to the shade12 and said: "Lord, I am in need of whatever good You may send down to me."
12. Do not wait for praise for every good thing you do, and do not look for applause for every heroic act. Live with a devout heart. Help those who need help, and console those who need consolation,
support the weak and help the stumbling to stand upright. Make doing good as a habit in you, like breathing. If you give charity, then turn away quickly averting your gaze, so that you do not see the brokenness of the poor before your eyes. How noble was Moses, peace be upon him, when he give the help, he turned away, and Allāh rewarded him with something more beautiful than a word of thanks. Always remember that you are dealing with Allāh - Generous God.
25. Then one of the two (women)13 came to him walking shyly14. She said: "My father calls you that he may give you the reward of your having watered (our flocks) for us. So when (Moses) came to him (Jethro) and narrated to him the (whole) stories, he said: "Fear not, you are delivered from the unjust people."
13. I.e., Zipporah.
14. To attain shyness, be humble, don't put yourself forward, don't seek position, fame or notoriety - dress and behave modestly, don't look down on others, help the weak, aid the oppressed, don't show off, avoid the desire to be the centre of conversations and attention - don't put out images of yourself for the people to see - don't seek to embarrass and shame others, and specially the believers, rather learn to love them and aide them - and if you are unknown, praise Allāh and thank Him. Muhammad, God's messenger said: "There is not a person who humbles himself for Allāh except that Allāh raises him."
26. One of the women said: "Father, Hire him. Indeed the best of that you may hire is the strong, the trustworthy."
27. (After sometime the father) said: "I want to marry you to one of these my daughters, on condition that you should serve me for eight years; but if you complete ten, then it will be (a favor) from you, and I do not want to be hard on you. You will find me, if Allāh wills, one of the righteous15."
15. Muhammed, God's messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, said: “Righteousness is good character and manners, and sin is what disturbs your heart and you hate for people to find out about it.”
Striving for righteousness means having a relationship with Allāh defined by obedience to His will and being shaped to have good character, taking as a model and good example the messenger of God, the Prophet Muhammad, for Allāh has not called us to impurity, but to righteousness. Being righteous makes the believers set themselves apart from the evils of the world.
28. (Moses) said: "This will be (an agreement) between me and you. Whichever of the two terms I fulfill, there will be no hostility on me. Allāh is a Witness to what we say."
29. Then when Moses had fulfilled the term, and he was traveling with his family (to Egypt), he glimpsed a fire in the direction of mount (Sinai). He said to his family: "Stay here, I have spotted a fire, maybe I shall bring to you from it some information16 — or a brand of fire so that you may warm yourselves."
16. About the route to Egypt.
30. So when he came to it, he was called from the right side of the valley in the blessed spot of the bush, saying: "O Moses, surely, I am Allāh, the Lord of all beings.
31. And cast down your staff." So when he saw it moving as if it were a snake, he drew back (in fear), and did not (dare to) return. "Moses, draw near and fear not; Indeed, you are of the secure.
32. Enter your hand into the opening (of your garment), it will come out (shining) white unblemished. Draw your hand to yourself to ward off fear. These are two Proofs from (Allāh) your Lord to Pharaoh and his council. They are a defiant disobedient people."
33. 'Moses' said: "My Lord, I have killed a soul of them, so I fear that they will kill me.
34. And my brother, Aaron, he is more fluent than I am. Send him with me to assist me and confirm my truthfulness. I am afraid that they will reject me."
35. (Allāh) said: (Moses), "We shall strengthen your arm by your brother (Aaron), and We shall give you both an authority, so that they will not reach you. With Our signs; you two and those who follow you will be predominant."
36. Then when Moses came to them with Our clear signs, they said: "This is not except invented sorcery, and we never heard of this from our forefathers."
37. Moses said: "My Lord (Allāh) knows best who has come with guidance from Him, and who will be for him the good outcome of the Home (of Bliss). Surely the workers of iniquity will not succeed and prosper."
38. And Pharaoh said: "O eminent ones, I have not known for you to have a god other than me. So kindle for me O Haman upon the clay (for baking bricks), and make for me a lofty tower so I may look at the God of Moses. And indeed, I think that he is of the liars.
39. And he (Pharaoh) and his soldiers were puffed up with pride in the land without any right, and they thought that they would never return to Us.
40. So We seized him and his soldiers, and cast them into the sea. So see how terrible was the end of the unjust.
41. And We made them leaders17 inviting to the (eternal) Fire, and on the Day of Resurrection (and Judgment) they will not be helped.
17. I.e., examples or precedents, followed by subsequent tyrants.
42. And We caused a Curse to pursue them in this (lowly) world, and on the Day of the Resurrection they will be of the despised.
43. And indeed, We gave Moses the Scripture after destroying the former (sinful) generations, as an Insights for the people, a guidance, and mercy, so that they may take heed.
44. And you (Muhammad) were not beside the western side (of the mountain to witness) when We decreed to Moses the Command (to go to Pharaoh) and you were not among the witnesses.
45. But We produced generations, and so the ages seemed long for them. And you were not dwelling among the people of Midian, reciting to them Our verses, but it is We Who kept sending 'messengers'18.
18. Allāh wants the best for all people - He wants His salvation to reach the world. And that is why He has sent the prophet Muhammad, as His last and final messenger to all the nations.
46. And you were not at the side of the mount (Sinai) when We called out (to Moses). But (you were sent) as a Mercy from your Lord to warn a people to whom no warner came before you, so that they may take heed19.
19. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him) was asked: "Was there ever a day that was worse for you than the day of Uhud?" He said: “I suffered a great deal at the hands of the pagans, and the worst that I suffered from them was the day of Al-‘Aqabah, when I presented myself to their chief, and he did not respond to what I wanted. So I left, so distressed that I did not know in which direction I was heading, and I did not realise where I was until I was in Qarn al-Tha‘aalib, where I lifted my head and saw that a cloud was shading me. I looked and saw therein Gabriel, who called me and said: "Allāh has heard what your people said to you, and how they have responded to you. He has sent to you the angel of the mountains, so that you can tell him to do whatever you want to them." Then the angel of the mountains called out to me and greeted me, then he said: "Muhammad, Allāh has heard what your people have said to you, and I am the angel of the mountains. Your Lord has sent me to you so that you can tell me what to do with them. If you wish I will bring together the two mountains of Makkah to crush them. The Messenger of God, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: “Rather I hope that Allāh will bring forth from their loins people who will worship Allāh alone, not associating anything with Him.”
47. And if not that a disaster should strike them for what their hands sent forth (of sins) and they would say: "Our Lord (Allāh), why did You not send to us a Messenger so that we should have followed Your revelations, and been among the believers?
48. But (now) when the Truth has come to them from Us, they say: "Why is he not given the like of what was given to Moses? Did they not disbelieve in what Moses was given before? And they said: "Two works of magic (the Torah and the Qur’an) backing up each other; and they said, in each, we are surely disbelievers."
49. Say (Muhammad): "Then bring a Book from Allāh which is a better guide than both of them, that I may follow it - if you are truthful."
50. But if they do not respond to you, then know that they only follow their low desires. Who is more astray than he who follows his lowly desires without any guidance from Allāh? Indeed, Allāh does not guide the unjust people.
51. And indeed, We have caused the Word (this Qur’an) to reach them in succession, so that they may take heed.
52. Those whom We gave the Scripture before it, they believe in it.
53. And when it is recited to them, they say, "We believe in it, surely it is the Truth from (Allāh) our Lord. Surely even before it, we were Muslims20."
20. I e., submitters to the Will of God.
54. These will be given reward twice for their patience, and they repel evil with good and out of what We have provided them they spend (for the Cause of Allāh).
55. And when they hear vain talk they turn away from it, and say: "We shall have our deeds and you shall have your deeds; peace be with you, we do not seek (the way of) the ignorants."
56. You cannot guide whom you like, but Allāh guides whom He wills, and He knows best those who are 'rightly' guided.
57. They say: "If we follow the guidance with you, we would be snatched away from our land. Have We not established for them a secure sanctuary (in Makkah)21 to which are brought the fruits of all things? A provision from Us - but most of them do not know.
21. Muhammad, God's Messenger, said: "Allâh has made this town, Makkah, a sanctuary. Its thorny bushes should not be cut, its game should not be chased, and its fallen things should not be picked up except by one who would announce them publicly."
58. And how many We have destroyed of a (sinful) town, who were recklessly (ungrateful) in their means of livelihood, so these are their homes, they have not been dwelt from after them except a little, and We were the Inheritors,
59. Your Lord 'Allāh' never destroy the towns until He sends to their metropolis a messenger, reciting to them Our verses. We never destroy the towns except when their people are unjust.
60. And whatever things you have been given are only a provision of this worldly life and its adornment. But what is with Allāh is far better and more lasting. Will you not then understand?
61. Is he to whom We have promised a goodly Promise (of Paradise) which he will meet with, like him whom We have provided him with the passing enjoyment of this worldly life - then he on the Day of Resurrection will be of those who are brought up (for the Torment of Hell)?
62. And (warn) on the Day when (Allāh) will call them and say: "Where are those whom you deemed to be My associates in worship?"
63. Those against whom the Word (Decree) is fulfilled will say: "Our Lord, these are the ones we caused to deviate; we let them to deviate, as we ourselves were in deviance. We disassociate ourselves from them before You. It was not us that they worshiped.
64. Then it will be said: "Invoke your associate-gods!" So they will invoke them, but they will not answer them, and they will see the torment, (and then will they wish) if only that they had been guided.
65. And (Mention) the Day when He will call them and say: "What was the response you gave to the messengers?"
66. Then the tidings will then be obscured for them on that Day22, nor will they ask one another.
22. They will not able to make excuses or invent lies.
67. So, as for him who repents, believes and does righteous deeds, then perhaps that he will be of the prosperous ones (in the Hereafter).
68. And your Lord (Allāh) creates whatever He wills and chooses. It is not for them to choose23. Glory be to Allāh, and exalted be He above what they associate with Him.
23. Muhammad, God's messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) used to teach his companions to seek guidance from Allāh in all things, just as he used to teach them a chapter from the Qur'an. He said: If any one of you is concerned about a decision he has to make, then let him pray two rak’ahs of non-obligatory prayer, then say: (O Allāh, I seek Your guidance [in making a choice] by virtue of Your knowledge, and I seek ability by virtue of Your power, and I ask You of Your great bounty. You have power, I have none. And You know, I know not. You are the Knower of hidden things. O Allāh, if in Your knowledge, this matter (then it should be mentioned by name) is good for me in my religion, my livelihood, and my affairs (i.e., both in this world and in the Hereafter), then ordain it for me, make it easy for me, and bless it for me. And if in Your knowledge it is bad for me and for my religion, my livelihood and my affairs (or: for me both in this world and the next life), then turn me away from it, and turn it away from me, and ordain for me the good wherever it may be, and make me pleased with it.
69. And your Lord (Allāh) knows what their chests conceal and what they reveal.
70. And He is Allāh, there is no god 'worthy of worship' except Him. All praise is due to Him in this first (life) and the Hereafter. And His is the Judgment, and to Him you shall be 'all' returned.
71. Say: "Tell me, if Allāh were to make the night to continue without break over you till the Day of Resurrection, what god other than Allāh that could bring you light24? Will you not then listen?"
24. Darkness can be bad for us. If we spend too much time out of reach of daylight, we lose track of time, we are more likely to feel depressed and we are more prone to lose touch with reality. Scientific research shows that prolonged exposure to darkness can very quickly disrupt our internal rhythms, our sense of self and our relationship with the world around us. We are creatures of the day, and though we need darkness in order to sleep, we need light in order to live.
72. Say: "Tell me, if Allāh were to make the day to continue without break over you until the Day of Resurrection, what god other than Allāh that could bring you the night in which you take rest25? Will you not then see?"
25. A good night’s sleep and rest is a priceless gift from Allāh. Healthy sleep restores strength and well-being to the human body and refreshes the mind and spirit. Sleep recreates. The Qur’an indicates that sleep is not meant only for the recuperation of a man’s body, but that there is a tremendous furtherance of spiritual and moral life during sleep and rest.
Sleep is considered a temporary withdrawal of the soul from the body, similar to the way it is taken during death.
Waking up from sleep is seen as a form of resurrection, as the soul returns to the body.
The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) used to say when he wake up from the sleep, "Praise be to Allah, Who has given us life again after He has taken it, and unto Him is the Resurrection."
73. And it is out of His mercy that He (Allāh) has made for you the night and the day, that you may rest therein, and seek of His bounty, and that you may give thanks.
74. And (warn) the Day when He will call them and say: "Where are those whom you deemed to be My associates (in worship)?"
75. And We shall extract from every nation a witness and say (to the polytheists): "Bring your proof," then they will know that the Truth is with Allāh alone, and that which they invented (of false gods) will be lost from them.
76. Indeed, Qarun 'Korah' was of the people of Moses, but he tyrannized them, and We had given him of the treasures, of which the keys would have been a burden for a band of men possessors of great strength. When his people said to him: "Do not exult, Allāh does not like those who exult (in wealth and are haughty)26;
26. When pride comes, then comes disgrace, but with humility comes wisdom. Allāh detests all the proud of heart. Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall. Money that makes you arrogant is poverty. The knowledge that makes you haughty is ignorance. The position that makes you mighty is
decadence. And the power that makes you tyrant is weakness. Real wealth, prestige, and knowledge are found in the humble.
The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allāh be upon him, the most humble man, used to milk his goat and polish his shoes, and sew his dress, and race with his wife Aisha.
He wipes away the tears of his wife, Safiya.
And when his companions divided the tasks of slaughtering the sheep. One of them said, “I will slaughter it,” and the other said, “I will skin it.” The Prophet Muhammad, may God bless him and exalt his mention, said: I am bringing firewood.
77. And seek the gains of what Allāh has given you the 'future' Home of the Hereafter. Do not neglect your portion of this world. Do good 'to others' as Allāh has done good to you. And do not seek to make corruption in the land. Indeed, Allāh does not like the corrupters.
78. (Korah) said: "I have been given it only because of the knowledge I have." Did he not know that Allāh had destroyed before him of the (sinful) generations those who were mightier in strength than him and greater in accumulation (of wealth)? The guilty will not be asked about their sins27.
27. In order to verify them, but only to rebuke and punish them by their sins.
79. So he went forth to his people in his finery. Those who desire this worldly life said: "O would that we had the like of what Korah is given; he is surely a possessor of great fortune."
80. And those who were given the 'right' knowledge said: "Woe to you. Allah’s reward is better for him who believes and does good deeds. And none attain this except the patient ones."
81. Thus We caused to swallow up him and his home, the earth, and there was for him no company to help him against Allāh, nor could he help himself.
