106. Believers, when death approaches any one of you, let two just men from your own people (Muslims) or any two other men (non-Muslims) witness at the time of making the will if you are traveling in the land and the calamity of death befalls you. If you have doubts about their testimony76, stand them up77 and let them take an oath after the (Asr i.e., afternoon) prayer; each one of them, (saying): 'I swear by God that my testimony is true.' I do not seek by it any price (worldly gain), even though he be a near relative, I will not hide the testimony ordained by Allah, for then I would be a deliberate sinner.
76. They are made to take such an oath because the judge has justifiable doubts about their truthfulness not because they are non-Muslim.
77. The two non-Muslim witnesses. When doubted, it has to be made absolutely sure that their testimony is trustworthy and that if challenged, even if by Muslims, the challengers will undergo equally scrupulous measures.
